I got a character that is a Thri-Kreen Swarmkeeper. They are a humanoid spider, and their swarm is a mass of tiny spiders, and they have two crossbows and a shield, then a free hand for somatic components. The tiny spiders would probably make huge web wings for flying abilities, and attach a web to the crossbow then ride on the crossbow bolt to deliver the swarm effects to creatures from range (such as extra damage by biting the enemy). I’ve played with an idea of a wisdom based ranger who takes 3 into profane soul bloodhunter, pick up eldritch blast eldritch adept feat for repelling blast, and you’ve got great control, the eldritch blast is wisdom based thanks to bloodhunter giving you the option of either wis or int, and I think I’d go firbolg, for more bonus action invisibility, and they get innate wisdom which is helpful
I thought the new version of the blood hunter was int. Hey it seems alittle all over the place but if you can find away to make it seem less chaotic for you that works.
I played a Ranger . A wasn’t the best at anything but. - I was the scout / stealth support to the rouge, so he didn’t have to go in alone. @@TheSinisterheroes the rest of the party was inexperienced players, so it was a good way to let them shine as the specialists / hero’s , but having my character to Back them up if something went wrong.., Personally I think that is the strength of the ranger class.
I love the ranger. I never figured I would but I absolutely love them. They can do a lot. People say they are weak but I have never seen it to be true.
I recommend using the “Golgari Agent” background for this subclass. Imagine a Reborn Swarmkeeper in the Undercity of Ravnica, collecting spores and fungus. I’d also suggest using the “Poisoner” feat, so you can make poisons out of those spores and fungus.
I really love poison. I love everything about it. I am gonna have to make a poison based subclass one day. Rant over but I really like the swarm keeper a lot it’s probably my favorite ranger
The idea I've been working on for a level 3 swarmkeeper is he uses a great club with shillelagh to just focus wisdom and dumps strength. Then using spells that buff melee damage (searing smite potentially). So I get shillelagh, the spell (or favored foe), and the swarm damage. And all his other spells are based around smoke illusions (silent image) and visibility/area control (fog cloud, entangle) He has little ash elementals as a swarm and his great club is a 4 foot smoking pipe that they hang out in. Loosely based on Morel from Hunter x Hunter. 20th level build is taking 16 levels in swarmkeeper ranger and 4 in rune knight fighter for action surge/runes. So 2-4 attacks per round, each with Shillelagh, melee spell (or favored foe), swarm damage, fire runes, and great weapon master bonus damage. Comes out to +9 to hit (with the -5 added, +14 normally) with 2d8 + 6d6 +15 damage per attack (a extra d6 on first hit with giants might). Max damage potential in one round of 274 with action surge. Average damage per attack is 41 and up to 4 attacks.
That’s awesome I love hunter x hunter. That’s a really cool build you made. It really hits morel really well. And with wisdom as your main stat it’s easy to not to be MAD. Which means you do have some real spell access.
@@TheSinisterheroes yeah the first couple versions I tried splitting focus on wisdom for spells and either str or dex for combat. And if I am totally lieing and no one wants to help you, you come to me I’ll get you what you need and very happy to do so
My friend suggested it, and if i can get into a game I am going Shifter (Monsters of the Multivers) with a Noble background. The build? Disney Princess. So all the little creatures (ravens, cardinals, bats, rats, squirrels, etc) will take action to tear Our Enemies Down. Think Beast from Beauty & the Beast, or a lupine Little Red Riding Hood for the Shifter's looks, beautifully dresses as she mauls her way through those who try to stop her!
I like combining Swarmkeeper Ranger, and Circle of Spores. So I can kill my enemies from afar with Necrotic daming as a reaction and turn them into Zombies. I like the theme of Infecting my fire ants swarm wth Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis. So I'll put a bunch of arrows in their body, and with their last bit strength as they crawl toards me to reach form my foot, my Ants will bite them and infect them Lanect Liver Flukes and turning them into Zombies. and then I use the Zombies as meet shields.
I like that you can use them in tandem, like maybe your ants crawl into the mind and reanimate the body you know. It’s a cool esthetic and it makes my skin crawl I love it.
Don't forget that it doesn't need to be bugs to be thematically creepy lol. If you want to go full edge-lord with this, be a wereraven and have your swarm be an unkindness of Ravens while you're flying in your hybrid form, sniping the enemy. Imagine the enemy's POV... they just took an arrow to the shoulder, stumbling, yanking the arrow out, only to look up and see a massive flock of ravens descending upon them in the wake of the arrow lol. same could be done with werebat and a swarm of bats.
One of the things I love about this ranger is the way it becomes visceral with how it looks. Just swapping your swarm’s appearance almost gives your character a new personality. How a raven swarmkeeper would act in my mind would be so different than a swarmkeeper with a murder of tiny lizards, you know what I mean? It feels like a new character when I see that different image.
I love this subclass. I took a Dhampir at level 1 and diped into a level of fighter for unarmed combat fighting style. Then from level 2 forward i did ranger and took swarm keeper as subclass at level 4. I asked the DM for bats for the swarm. Eventually i got the cloak of the bat.....yah i was Batman...
