  • Super7 makes some amazing-looking action figures... but are they work the $50+ price tag? Especially when Hasbro and Mattel have now jumped on the adult-centered, collector toy market? To put it plain and simple... weeeelllll it depends.
Justin and Kyle run through a brief history of Super7 and give their opinions on the matter. Kyle offers perspective as an overall toy collector, while Justin vents some frustrations he's personally had with the company's product.

Realistically, with Super 7 you're paying a premium for the fact that these need to be produced in limited quantity by a small company that can't leverage the economy of scale. The extent to which that is "worth it" is in the eye of the beholder.

I used to have dozens of Super 7 figures, all of their TMNT, Thundercats, and a few others. But I had so many issues with loose joints, bad paint, very limited articulation and at $55 and up, they just became not worth it. I sold everything and started collecting Newage Transformers as I always wanted to get back into Transformers. Holy cow, I was blown away how much better these 3rd party figures were than Super 7 and they are super complicated, near the same price, sometimes cheaper even. I just cannot go back which hurts as I love their toon GIJOE line, but after they forgot to paint the heads on Wave 2, then just said deal it, I was out. I don't know how long you've been collecting, but before there was a mandate by every small toy producer to half melt your figure in order to move the joints, we had the freezer trick to help liberate a stuck joint. And it worked. I know some of that is materials, many composites now use injected POM joints within PVC parts, and older figures used PVC or ABS for the joints too but this is a long way of saying, cold weather, cold temperatures, are not the enemy. If the toy is snappable cold, it's tearable when hot.

The thing is that Super 7 produces a lot of stuff that no other company would/will. Sure, you have to put up with things like the higher prices because they don't have the economy of scale working for them, but if you want what they make they're the only game in town.
Nobody else is ever going to do things like their deep bench GI Joe sub-license or Toxic Crusaders ultimates, so though I personally can't afford much at all in that price range I can totally see why some collectors are willing to "bite the bullet" on once in a lifetime offerings.

It's really tricky with Super7, because they do things no other toy companies are doing, but their quality control has definitely been an issue for me. I collect their ThunderCats Ultimates line, and I find that they're best left in the packaging, because they do look pretty great, but there's always a risk of paint slop and loose joints. My Cheetara's leg broke off, just because I lightly bent it back to put her in a sitting position. They tend to do a better job with playsets, so looking forward to Cat's Lair. I was actually happy and rooting for them when they had the temporary rights to handle MoTu Classics because one big makeover that they did over, what is considered to be almost obsolete, the Classics buck system, was improving the articulation points. Ankle pivots, hinged and swivel wrists to name a few. Also, they improved the aesthetics of the body by giving it pinless joints. Throughout the time when Mattel was still doing Classics, they never seemed to be bothered with correcting the joint issues despite fans complaining about them for years. Yes. it was also a hit and miss with Mattel at the time. So, at least Super7 took the liberty to do something new or even innovative. And one more thing. Remember when Mattel first introduced the Club Grayskull or Filmation line, which started out with the main man himself, He-man. The sculpt and paintjob was great but the ankle joints were hideous! Now, as you can see the Heman figure in your possession has much better ankle joints, aesthetically and functionally.

I open to display and do stop-motion with my nephews. S7 while they hold my favorite IP, price to quality isn't there for me. I'd buy a few to keep in the box but that makes them $50-$70 space takers for me. I got into SperoToys AWOK line as a result and grabbed a Street Shark inspired set from Fury in the process. Great objective look at what their producing compared to how they are pricing it.

I've been wanting someone else to do Thundercats. Just couldn't justify $50+ a piece for them. I'd rather pay less even for a 5 POA retro scale come back. If we could get Thundercats on a Marvel Legends, MOTU Masterverse / Origins, GI Joe Classified level of articulation for $20-30 each it would be perfect. Plus I collect other stuff to so I can't justify getting into them for that price range.

I collect from many different companies, the only Super 7 i buy are their Dungeons and Dragons reaction figures and i pre ordered the D&D cartoon stuff coming in Nov. I also buy the Ghost Pappa figures but that's about it so far from them. I buy anything from NECA except for Turtles. Hasbro i buy Star Wars Black Series and TVC, as well as their D&D stuff. Godzilla figures i buy from Hiya Toys. Jada Toys i bought the cereal monsters and Chester Cheetah ad characters. Mcfarlane its mainly their new Music Maniac line. I cherry pick the Mythic Legion stuff i like from the Four horsemen and buy all their Figura Obscura when they drop. I just bought my first Mezco one:12 figure, not sure i want to delve into them to much way to expensive. I think the only major Toy company i don't buy from is Mattel and that is only because they don't offer anything i want atm. Though i do like their He-man stuff, which i had the old stuff as a kid in the 80s. There is just to much of that line out there and i would have to play catch up and that would cost a fortune, so im staying away from that line.

These kind of videos are very much appreciated with the upfront genuine reviews, granted you’re now on Super7’s blacklist and will never get shipped product for reviews J/k lol maybe your youtube channel will pay off for being real. Personally I can’t stand serious nice guy reviews like I just saw earlier…a great figure was reviewed but multiple concerns still unfixed in every variant, yet the guy that received the variant before everyone else only has praises for it. Hmm suspicious? This is on a $100+ figure!. That’s dishonest but the guy is so nice that no one dare comment on it, and it’s hard not to feel bad for even thinking of saying anything. Kind of depends on the line - like I've been quite interested in some of their Disney animated figures which by the simple physics of the character design have limited articulation if you want to get the look right (and you really really do). But I don't know why anyone would want their Power Rangers when the regular old Lightning Collection is way better. They are also pricey - but you do get a lot of accessories, so if you like them then it might be worth it (for the Disney figures, anyway).

Super7 started their "Ultimates " with taking over MOTUC at $35, a big jump from MattyCollector's $20. Super7 still uses that body type. Later on a price increase to $45, now $55 and up! I was shocked to see TMNT Scumbug at $65 and Wingnut is even $75. I do like the figures and properties Super7 is releasing; especially ThunderCats, TMNT (vintage Playmates recreations) and Toxic Crusaders. I'm 100% "cherry picking" their products. Human faces look off sometimes like the Conan figures. I was tempted when on clearance but it was too off putting.

I've been collecting Super7 Ultimates from day one (He-Man etc...) and I honestly haven't had any issues with any of my figures so in that regard, I'm pretty darn happy with them, but as far as price goes... That's a whole other thing. I really wish they'd cut back on all the extras. I don't have any interest in switching out the hands or the heads. I also don't want weapons that they can't carry or hold at all times. It just seems like they're trying to make us feel better about the cost by throwing in a bunch of stuff we don't need or want. Lastly, the vehicles they are making are also insanely over priced. Valaverse just proved that you can make one and not totally break the bank. Even as an independent company. I'm still going to buy the stuff I want, but it's really difficult to afford it now that I'm on a super tight fixed budget and living in California. Hopefully by next year we'll have some kind of stability come back and prices of oil/plastic will go down, but I really doubt companies will lower their prices.

That's a 15+ year old mold with 0 innovation or investment in it. A mold they didn't even come up with themselves. I only have the thundercats, but I would say that they are not toys. They are slightly poseable statues....who have difficulties standing up.I need to get some stands for them.
My sons (4 & 6) would absolutely destroy them if they played with them. Definatly not meant for playing. You have thin parts that would get bent or broken off quite easilly if played with.
The quality control seems to be quite lacking. If I look at Grune, some joints are very loose to the point they can't stand up straight. One shoulder skull has a rubber slot and a rubber peg that just doesn't match up. It pushes the peg out, ruining the look of the figure. Paint job is generally good, but there are a few WTF moments.
I expect better at that price point.

OK, so, I have many thoughts and comments on this topic. I appreciate what B. Flynn has had to say about hiding "unseemly" joints and taking away articulation for improved likeness, HOWEVER; their real person head-sculpts are pus. NJPW and The Major Pod guys had figures released and they had a likeness that was as if they were a cartoon and not real people. Terrible. For all the deco hits and first action figure with a middle finger first NJPW line, whatever, they weren't great.
Animated head-sculpts are superb. Simpsons, Disney stuff, Animamniacs, Silver Hawks, Thundercats, The playmates TMNT and Toxic crusaders, head sculpts are straight up the same pulled off the screen or vintage card and I like that. KUDOS! That Arnold head, Major pod and NJPW?
    🤮
"Ultimates". Why give the TMNT line the old-school style weapons rack and sprue as well as the updated versions? Surely the updated weapons are ultimate and the brown sprue is just added cost to them and thus, the consumer... could have done without it. Mattel's ultimates have tremendous articulation and, yes, some of it unsightly, but, a ninja turtle should at least have peg holes in the feet. That is a big inconcsistentcy of that line.
Display box... I appreciate that they are awesome looking, but once the figure is out of the box, tada, bye bye, in the bin you go. So, why not give an option? They'll save expense and decrease cost and allow for more sales on the ACTUAL FIGURE!
Inconsistencies of articulation. Some are so stiff I fear them snapping. Others are marinettes without strings....
My personal issue is how B. Flynn tells us what we want. I do not want 27 pairs of hands as they're not completely useful and a poor argument for increased cost.
TL;DR: costs can be cut down to save the consumer cost, inconsistencies need to be addressed and B.Flynn talks out of both sides of his mouth.
    Great vid.

Super7 has a MASSIVE price problem. I would have bought the Fantasia figures (it's my favourite movie) and the Metaluna Mutant (because NECA won't for their Universal Monsters line), but not for $85 Canadian. NECAs top out about $60 CAD and even that's high for them. But even the ReAction figures... A 5POA figure that is made to deliberately look janky and retro, meant to stay on the card as an art piece, should not cost $23 CAD. Toys R Us can't even get rid of them on sale because they can't sell them cheap enough to entice people to buy them while still recouping cost. I could go down to one right now and buy the whole Universal Monsters ReAction line if they were maybe $10/ea.

I wish we still had Toys R Us down here! We agree. A little too pricey. Thanks for the comment!

I will give Super7 this... they add a lot in the way of accessories and don't just release the same figure again with slight upgrades.

Just wait, prices on both their ReAction and Ultimates! stuff will drop (most of the time).

I like the 6/7 inch scale gi Joe stuff , but in the UK they are 55 pounds each, that's 25 to much.

They astronomicly overpiced and Neca in europe they look nice but the plastick is not so good

Yeah, we think Super 7 might be in trouble now that the pandemic collector boom is winding down. They’re still releasing stuff, though! You’re absolutely right about the Neca plastic. It feels very different from the stuff Hasbro and Mattel uses.

The re-engineering of Cheetara from render to product just totally destroyed my joy in Ultimates. She just doesn't look like Cheetara at all (and if you want to make a gaze thing then I mean sure whatever you want but for $50 she's just not screen accurate at all, or toy accurate or storybook, Rankin/Bass initial design or anything). It just made all of their lines not fun and I haven't purchased since then. I got a Pumyra in a trade but haven't bought an ultimate. While it's probably just a ME thing I just am not into the product. Will likely try and sell off and complete vintage instead. I can't barely pose ultimate figures anyway, they fall down constantly

We agree. Justin was disappointed in his Cheetara figure as well. The Thundercats line killed the enthusiasm for him.

I used to collect alot of Super7. Their Thundercats WERE my main focus, until Tygra & Cheetara broke the Camels back. Too many QC issues and too much bait & switch. - I'm pleased to say, I stay away from anything Super7 now.

Super7 figurrs, just like any product, they do have issues. But overall they are decent. They have way more better sculpts and paint apps and accesories than the figures from Mattel and Hasbro. And they have a much smaller production quantity. All this leads to higher prices.

What qualifies as sculpts? One of the reasons I don’t like Super 7 is how smooth their figures are. Most of them don’t have sculpt details/texturing.

Super7 seven inch figures are simply too expensive.
    $55 per figure?
Who the hell can afford to collect that?
