Yeah, this is really what worries me. I know the fan translation isn't technically canon with names and how the conversations went, but they were just so good that it helped to solidify it as the best game in the series. I'm not sure that these 'canon names' are making a good impression, and I just hope that they don't ruin Sebastian-... I mean Eustace's arc. ... Justi-... Verity's plot is a bit better though, rather than for two cases willing to throw innocents in jail then in the fourth case pulling a 'I'ma good guy' twist, lol. Still really looking forward to the game, just... being cautious, lol.
yes!!! you get it!! names are so important to games like these with so much text and if a character’s name sounds lame or stupid or whatever then it typically won’t work as well as it could have if that character is meant to evoke emotions later in the game, they named my boy a pun on “useless whiner” and now mr useless whiner is gonna have a tragic backstory and it won’t hit as hard because it’s cursed to include a name based on “useless whiner” CONSTANTLY!! it really sucks because sebastian is such an important character to me and sebastian debeste is a name with a kind of fancy sound to it (sebastian) and high expectations attached to it (debeste) and the meaning behind it is just so,,,,!!!! thought was put into it!! but hearing a father call his son a complete idiot will probably be far less impactful because the son is named “useless whiner” and it hurts seeing how sebastians story will be changed and possibly not taken as seriously by the fans with the new name!!!!!! with important characters (i’m not great at remembering names of side characters most of the time), many of the names in the fan translation were’nt TOO over the top with the puns, they didn’t make you think of the pun every time you heard the name (at least not for me), and even the most notable of pun names still sounded like actual names (Justine Courtney, for example, is still a plausible name) but in the translation it’s totally different because some of the names feel a bit unnatural and a bit too ham-fisted, it’s like the pun is’nt naturally incorporated into the name but more like they changed the pun a bit to become a name. you know? sorry for my long rant im just autistic and AA is a special interest of mine, and sebastian is really important to me because of how relatable he is so this just hurts a lot :(
I'd say out of all the names Justine Courtney to Verity Gavèlle was the better choice. It actually makes for a more interesting name. Eustace, and Fender, however.

They also gave new names to some other characters, though only ones from Turnabout Target. For the record: Nicole Swift is now Tabitha Lloyd Di-Jun Huang is now Di-Jun Wang Horace Knightley is now Chester Knight. The only name I truly agree with changing is for Nicole, as Tabitha Lloyd actually goes pretty well with her for a pun name. They really botched so many other names though...

If I2 had been localized sooner, and we had these names from the beginning, a lot of these wouldn't seem so bad. It's just that the familiarity we have has been disrupted, causing a lot more issues in people than when a name is normally released in an AA game. I think a similar thing happened with a few of the GAA characters when they were officially localized too.

i hate all the obvious pun names that the plot relevant characters have. like eddie fender sounds like its just a lame pun fitting of a one off witness or a first case victim where raymond shields sounds like an actual name someone would have and it's subtle with the hidden meanings instead of being a glaringly obvious pun. i'm fine with the obvious pun names for the one off unimportant characters though
