- The heart-warming story of Tiny Lund winning the 1963 Daytona 500 is shared in this Ford Autolite Sparkplugs film. Earlier in the month Lund had pulled Marvin Panch out of a burning Maserati. Lund was not only awarded the Carnegie Medal for his heroism but was asked to fill in for the injured Panch in the famed #21 Wood Brothers Ford. Lund made the most of his opportunity and went on to win the 5th annual Great American Race.

Dear god the amount of catcalls in this ADVERTISMENT FOR SPARK PLUGS is hilarious
Thank you for this. As someone born in 1998, im absolutely fascinated with old stuff. Plus i love all these old race cars. Absolutely gorgeous cars
Good to hear.
"Back when racin' was racin'!"
Holy heavens if never seen a film so old with this type of quality
Grew up driving a 63 galaxie in high school, still drive one today.love em
12:01 The first time I’ve ever heard Richard Petty be called Dick Petty
The quality is incredible 😍
About half way through this I feel compelled to go out and buy some Autolite plugs.
Wait. This quality is amazing
whatever you've used for the HD scan/upscale, looks great
I hate to argue but that is how you cc a combustion chamber not how you check engine displacement cylinder heads do not affect CID that would be bore X stroke. The cc test is for calculating the engines compression ratio along with several other measurements
I saw that too.
ok. got back and complain about it. SHERMAN set that way back machine to 1963.......Dick Petty doesn't have a future in NASCAR....
@@lestersabados1306 did you reply to the correct comment? if you did what are talking about ?
@@insulman100 it's a mr. Peabody of Underdog show. and joke about Richard Petty not having a future with nascar. lighten up Frances
Tiny Lund is the GOAT🏁
For a film that was bankrolled by Ford/Autolite, I tip my hat that this film included a few images with Chevy and Pontiac in it.
This contains remarkable rare film footage of legendary names of team owners and car builders:
John Holman
Ralph Moody
Bud Moore
Ray Nichels [remarkable for an Autolite/Ford produced film that a Pontiac stalwart of that era was heralded]
Glen Wood
Smokey Yunick [running a Chevy that year] was the one person out of that group that received plenty of media prominence, over the years, with film images.
Over the years there was a lot of print about Holman, Moody, Moore, Nichels, and Wood, but little in the way of film for those stalwarts of NASCAR.
With many of the GM cars blowing out oil and Fords using oil I would have expected caution flags. Did ABC just skip them in the condensed broadcast or were there none? I don't remember any live broadcasts back then so I assume this one was delayed. I listened to this race on the radio and all I remembered was Ford got a lot of milage out of Lund's storybook ride and the fact that the underdog factory Fords took the top 5 finishes.
There's a NASCAR Classics RUclips channel that has the 1963 Daytona 500 as it was televised, tape-delayed, on ABC-TV [US] Wide World of Sports [WWoS]. The video is just a bit under 50 minutes.
WWoS was televised at 5 PM the following Saturday of the sporting event; whereupon that 90 minute show shared time with another sporting event; where my recollection says that shared event took place in New Hampshire.
ABC-TV didn't attempt to televise live races of any sort until the late 1960s, with the USAC Indy Car race at Trenton in July 1969 coming to mind.
Merry Christmas .
Great footage
The first nine minutes is an extended advertisement.
A 16 minute AutoLite commercial
BJ .............I listened to this race on a Emerson radio in 63 ..........thanks to Autolite I can see it 60 years later !!!!!
These were promotional films that were shown at trade shows, auto shows, and other gatherings that were interest related to automobiles. Gasoline and oil companies were also known to do the same back in that era.
The 427 Ford DOMINATES at Daytona!
Hallman-Moody and The Wood Brothers are to name a few.
sad to see Tiny was killed in a race in 1975
I don't want to ask how you get it

Back when racers never fought
Oh please - Linda Petty pulled a gun on Tiny Lund so he would not beat the shit out of Richard for a little on track incident that let Richard win.........no fighting my ass.
Bud Moore made a name for himself LONG before he became a NASCAR legend. They could make a movie of his life completely leaving out his racing career and it would still be an unbelievable story.
Tiny Lund and the Wood Bros. finest hour. There's another movie hollywood. Real American Heroes with no agenda driven lies like yourselves
I’m so glad you had to mention politics instead of just enjoying the video
Anyone know who the narrator is?
Same one for the 1960 Daytona 500 (the one in the Daytona 500 playlist)
3:50 that man was holding lugs in his teeth probably got some crazy lip cancer
PD 1044 ................he got .......Drop Jaw ...........common for tire men back in the day
Girls back then look so much better look back then and what they do now
It's not so much that the females "looked" better back then...but that they had..a better attitude, a better look in their eye, happy and positive, approachable. Not like the hateful hurtful hostile scornful snotty entitled male hating feminists wer'e all stuck with now....while societies population base collapses because NO GOOD MAN is willing to SUFFER their sundry abuses anymore.
Bye honey, I wish I could collect on that I.O.U.
LS 1306 .................he collected that IOU at the Darlington Southern 500 beauty pageant ??? .........so did Snidely Whiplash
