The song is about impossible love. It tells the tale of a young man (or woman, depending the version), who tells the listener to ask his former lover to perform for him a series of impossible tasks. Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme have a symbolic meaning. Both man and woman in this ballad invoke said powers: mildness to soothe the bitterness, spiritual strength to endure being apart from each other, faithfulness and lastly encouragement, to fulfill the impossible tasks given.
Are you going to Scarborough Fair Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Remember me to one who lives there She once was a true love of mine Tell her to make me a cambric shirt Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Without no seams nor needle work Then she'll be a true love of mine Tell her to find me an acre of land Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Between the salt water and the sea strands Then she'll be a true love of mine Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme And gather it all in a bunch of heather Then she'll be a true love of mine Are you going to Scarborough Fair Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Remember me to one who lives there She once was a true love of mine
This and the Simon and Garfunkel ver. are like my favorite versions and trust me there are so many other versions out there. Her voice just fits the song so well.
@Rachael Blackwell Triela was always the ass-kicker of the five. Henrietta had a much more complex depth to her and this certain melancholy that made the first season ace. The to an extend carefree character of Triela did just not fit as the main protagonist. But good for you if you could enjoy season 2. Then you had a longer positive experience. For me, the show ended with season 1.
Not unfulfilled love. Impossible to attain love. The singer's suitor is being asked to perform impossible tasks to prove their love. The cyborgs are also asked to perform impossible tasks, but they are greater than human and just might attain the love of their handlers.
Hearing this again makes me want to buy the Gunslinger Girl series, been sitting in my wish list for about a year now. But every time I think about it, this song pops into my head. So beautiful
There are dozens (if not hundreds) of versions of this song floating around. I actually enjoy this one more then the Simon and Garfunkel version. The music has a lilt to it that the duo is missing and the instrumentation is very nice. We know music is alway a matter of personal preference so my feelings won't be the same as others. Still, this one, with the Gunslinger Girl episode story that went with it, made it better than most.
The other thing about this version I love is how relatively simple it is. For instance, Kokia's version of the song (she did some of the other songs for Gunslinger Girl) has some lovely vocal work, but feels overproduced, which really doesn't work to bring out the core nature of the song as a folk piece. Frankly, I feel even the S&G version is a bit overproduced in ways.
Yea, I reckon you have the guts to sing this song Don't be afraid to let out whatever you're keeping inside and show the world that you're moar gutsy than what most people are
"Don't judge a book by it's cover." Wow, does that apply to this anime? I put off watching this for a while because I saw little girls and giant guns and thought there wasn't much to it. Boy was I wrong. Instant-classic 5/5 for me.
I did the same. I started watching the first season back in 2018 and found it pretty boring (I had just finished watching gunsmith cats and wanted more of that kind of mindless fun action) so I dropped it. Later in 2022 I had a school assignment and thought I'd put GSG in the background while I worked just to have something there but I ended up getting hooked not long after. Great anime. Makes me feel bad for the children though...
Man, I just searched for this song, and didn't remember where did I heard it the first time, I had totally forgotten this anime Now that I found it I feel so nostalgic

Lol yeah, the premise and name kinda seem like it'd be a wild, if not goofy action-fest. But it's way more vibey tragedy action. Agree though, it's an absolute classic.
Oh wow, This voice be like elves in The Lord of Ring extremely who have talented! (I try hard to learn about english so maybe gammatically wrong! Hope everyone sympathized!)
@Rachael Blackwell I almost completely forgot about the ending. Then you come through like a freight train and remind me. Well... might as well go rewatch the anime. In all seriousness, it's anime like Gunslinger Girl that helped me get into writing fanfiction. That way one can get some kind of closure by reading a different ending.
I love the Japanese inflection and the angelic tone of the singers voice, this makes me want to dance in field of sunflowers and paint the color of love with my finger, whats the singers name?

I like how people who knows this song tends to link with people with tragic endings for some reason...
It is my favorite of the "Scarborough Fair" songs sung by various people.

This song about unfulfilled love is so very matching for the extremely sad basic narrative of Gunslinger Girl. Well, first season. Lovin' it.
Um no, not unfullfilled, rather, an impossible to attain love....

The meaning of Scarborough fair - Its about Unfulfilled love. Scarborough fair - market place located in Yorkshire England

This music is soothing to hear in 2020....given the year we’ve had so far.

This song and the first season of GG belong together. Sad, so deep.

Call me crazy, but I don’t think season 3 or 4 is coming anytime soon. Too bad, it gets wild-I recommend the manga.
