    This was a great conversation to listen to. Really appreciate how direct and plane spoken Blake is. I would expect a lot of dominos to fall in their direction, especially from the business aviation community if the engine tests go well next year. We are approaching another golden era in aviation. Thank you to everyone at Boom for pushing to bring supersonic back!

    Have they said what the fuel burn/passenger/nautical mile is yet?

      this is the right question! Supersonic transport is a great innovation to stretch into, however it must be practical efficient and economical to become viable.
      So far I haven’t heard anything about the operations statistics, does anyone know?
      ps: I am sure they did all their market research, but the name “Boom” to me could have negative connotations. 💥

    I was just wondering at what altitude would the supersonic part of a flight be at, Because the Concord was up around 60,000 feet.???

    The sonic boom question cracks me up. When was the last time someone heard one (except on a military training range)? I remember the b-58s booming everywhere in the 1960s. A lot depends on the aerodynamics. An F-16 can be supersonic above 30k ft. and the boom won't reach the ground.

    • @TSERJI
      @TSERJI 7 дней назад +1

      you're kidding yourself. An F16 flying supersonic will absolutely and very noticeably produce a sonic boom, especially at such a low altitude as 30k feet where the air is very dense. Even the concorde flying at 60k feet and the sr71 flying at 80k feet always produced sonic booms over their flight path. The Air Force ran a whole experiment in the 60's where they deemed the sonic boom to be so annoying of a problem that they banned overland supersonic flight.
      The only way one could reasonably avoid a sonic boom (without having to give the fuselage a length-to-width ratio so outrageously large/impractical that it'd make the already skinny concorde look bulbous) would be to fly the plane well into the stratosphere, at altitudes so high they'd be knocking on the door of what is literally space (space officially starts at 50 miles above sea level over the US, and 62 miles over the rest of the world). That's an altitude of 264,000 feet, where the air density is so low that air particles aren't close enough to each other to bump into each other to produce a boom.

      @@TSERJI When I flew F-16As in the 1980s, we were cleared to go supersonic above 30k. Had a squadron mate that went from overhead Las Vegas to overhead Phoenix in 17 minutes. And what is your supersonic flight experience?

    • @TSERJI
      @TSERJI 6 дней назад +1

      @@planetim and did you produce sonic booms while flying supersonic over heavily populated areas of Las Vegas or Phoenix? Because based on your quote, "from overhead Las Vegas to overhead Phoenix," unless you flew supersonic while you were over populated areas of either city (which, supersonic flight over populated land is strictly prohibited even by the military unless you're on an important mission or test) also known as one of the least dense stretches of land known to man. Which is probably okay for flying supersonic over.

    • @planetim
      @planetim 6 дней назад

      @@TSERJI We were told that above 30k the boom wouldn't reach the ground. We generally didn't go supersonic outside of military areas, but it was not forbidden anywhere if you were above 30k. I figured that the F16 was a very small jet, so had a very small sonic footprint.

    • @TSERJI
      @TSERJI 6 дней назад

      @@planetim Sonic booms absolutely do reach the ground if you're flying at such a low altitude as 30k feet. And will especially do so in an aircraft that's as bulbous as an F16 (by 'bulbous', I meant it has quite a large frontal area and fuselage cross section compared to its overall length. Many other supersonic aircraft, like the XB70 or concorde, were very slim and long; essentially, very skinny). The size of the plane doesn't matter in regard to sonic boom footprint -- what does matter is how thin the plane is compared to its length, so that it can slice through the air while disturbing as few air particles as possible.
      So I'm not sure what kind of fantasy physics world the Atc controllers were living in when they told you that.

    Simple approach to solve the sonic boom problem, just don't go supersonic until you're over water.

    Im not sitting in a supersonic flight if it is not using very advanced materials that has 4x the stress limits of any material known to mankind at the moment otherwise it will not work at all.
