- In this video, I walk through the entire process that I used to make a large boat leaning post using only fiberglass laminated honeycomb composite panels and PVC trim. You can use this process to build almost anything that you need for your boat restoration project including a center console, steps, fish box, or anything you can think of. The final piece is SUPER lightweight probably less than 20lbs total! I used a combination of epoxy adhesive and polyester resins to complete this project.
Something I didn't show in the video, but I also added 1708 tabbing to the inside corners after everything was tacked together.

Thanks. Yes the PVC worked very well for making a nice consistent radius. You could use foam as well but I think the PVC was a better choice because it required less glass to protect the edge from getting dented or damaged
Sanding is the most common thing I tell my wife when she ask how much have you got left to do....lol.....so true...great job....

Awesome video! I'd like to build one very similar, but maybe add a livewell. I would love to see how you make a mold using this as the plug and I'd also like to see how you build a leaning post from that mold. Been watching all of your videos. They're very inspirational. Another request (You are taking requests, right?) would be a video showing the installation of a hatch receiver in a deck. I need to add an anchor locker hatch to the bow of my boat. @@BackyardBoatworks Thanks for that video link! I think that was the only one of your videos I haven't watched yet. Installing the hatch receiver looks pretty straight forward, but doing the underside would be tough, but not impossible in the bow of my boat. I have a little bit of room in there to work. I guess my next wish list video would be applying non-skid to the repaired area to make it look factory. Thanks again, I think your videos are some of the best out there for this stuff.
There’s a few ways you could install the hatches it’s all depends on your deck material. You don’t necessarily need to glass the bottom if your glass on top is thick enough. When I installed that hatch I used 1 layer of 1708 and 2 layers if 1.5oz CSM which would be pretty stable. You should be able to reach underneath the hatch and apply some thickened and reinforced epoxy to the seam and that will be very strong.
I’m taking November off to paint the topside if my 37 boat and I’ll be rolling non skid.

Its difficult to give you an exact list, but the main materials were as follows...
5/8" honeycomb/nidacore sheet
3/4" quarter round PVC trim
Polyester Resin
Epoxy Bonding adhesive
Polyester Fairing Compound
Polyester High Build Primer

What were your original 4x8 sheets used for the base material? Didn't know about CoreMat. That is useful information and a big help in many situations. What are its strengths? Can you use it for structural areas as well as just filler? Enjoying your videos.
4x8 honeycomb sheet. Coremat is used as a sand which core material typically used to build thickness and add strength to large areas of glass such as hull sides or the walls of consoles etc. By itself it doesn’t have any strength but can be used in creative situations like I did here. It’s more or less silica in sheet form. It’s sold by the foot in 38” widths.

Haha. That’s an impossible questions to answer quickly. It took me 4 months to build mine. Watch my cockpit cooler videos. Building the mold is the easy part.
Just curious as why you didn’t make that one a plug and build a mold from it for future ones

How would incorporate a livewell tank in to the leaning post?
I would have to make a mold for the tank and either attach it to the back up put it under the seat. A lot more work!

I was also considering using this material for my deck. But when I was messing around with it I realized that screws don't work very well with this material. Some people said to glass the console to the deck but I have also heard that it cracks easily that way with the leverage the console has on the small glass connections. Does anyone have any recommendations for fastening a console to a nidacore deck?
Screws won’t hold in any composite core material. The only core material that holds screws is plywood. You can screw into the nida core as long as your glass lamination is thick enough. Typically 3 layers of 1708 is enough to hold a screw for most applications. If you need something stronger just add more 1708. Your screw will bite into the glass, not the nidacore. You can glass the console to the deck also. It’s not going to crack if it’s done correctly.

What is the brand of the honeycomb material, and where can I locate it? West Marine, Amazon, Home Depot etc?
It’s called Nida Core or Carbon Core. You’re only going to find it at fiberglass marine supplier like FGCI. It comes in 4x8 sheets only.
How does it attach to the boat if the bottom is nidacore?
It was eventually tabbed to the deck with glass and epoxy resin
How good does fiberglass stick to pvc
Very well. Epoxy resin is better but polyester sticks also. Just lightly scuff the surface with about 220 grit.
I'm sure it is a worthwhile video but I can't watch it. The video is so fast and jerky I got motion sick. Worst case since I watched Bullet in the movie theatre in 1968.
