Whilst I acknowledge the deep and insightful intelligence of Andrew Solomon, I think it's important to acknowledge that he was born into affluence, which opens many doors socially and psychologically. I acknowledge the universality of his experience, however privilege removes some of the struggles that most people face that can make depression seem insurmountable. He can afford therapy, higher education, adoption, travel and moves in powerful and educated circles. When 'facing your fears' means facing destitution and being alone it's rather a different cup of tea. I'm afraid this makes his situation rather less relatable for me

The ultimate depression, the ultimate existential anxiety, pain and suffering bear no meaning from the sufferer's perspective. I doubt there is any meanimg there. What is meaningful is the search for meaning through there is no meaning at all. The search for meaning synonymous with embarking on a Journey symboli es our innate urge to get away from the existential suffering but how can we travel when depression strikes the time comes to a halt and the space contracts? How can you escape the suffering of timeless and spaceless perception of depression where there is no distance to travel, no time to go by, no will to get up and go. Serious depression changes our perception of time, space and our identity IT makes our suffering ultimate and eternal because of our living in timelessness

What really counts is the universality and the truth of his message. IT is right to Say that a privilleged socioeconomic status help US survive depression but if depression takes on the ultimate form and the suffering can no more be borne any longer, then no assets ever matter to the sufferer.
