This song was on an old 78 rpm record when I was small and always sang along at the chorus. I'd forgotten all about it! The record had been passed down from my brother and sister who were 16 & 12 yrs. older than I, both born in the 40's.

In 1954, when I was 5, I went with my mother through the Brandenburg Gate from the GDR to the West. My mother was very afraid of the ID check in East Berlin, then the flight would have ended. We then lived with a family in West Berlin and there I heard this title as a child. I had it in my head for 50 years, but only then did I try to find it. I only knew the melody, not the title and took 3 months to search the internet and then the joy was great when I heard it again , The singer skilfully reads the text and sings perfectly.

That's a very interesting story. I visited Berlin in 1974, saw the Brandenburger Tor, and went through Checkpoint Charlie for a tour of East Berlin. It was a relief to return to the West!
This version is actually a parody of a song that was very popular at the time of the American Civil War, "Wait for the Wagon." The original, straight version begins "Will you come with me, my Phyllis dear..." and tells the story of a young farm boy courting his sweetheart. Southerners sang, "The Dissolution Wagon," while Northerners sang "The Old Union Wagon."

The movie is called "Sis Hopkins" released in 1941. A young Susan Hayward is also in the movie as Judy Canova's (Sis Hopkins) city cousin. Great movie with great musical performances.

Not really. They both started basically at the same time. Minnie Pearl started in 1938 on the Grand Ole Opry. And about six months later, Judy Canova along with her brother and sister left Florida and took their singing act to New York. The people that ran the Chase And Sanbourne Hour saw them and a little while later, they became regulars on Edgar Bergens radio show. When his show was compressed to 30 minutes, Judy Canova got her own Saturday night series on NBC .
