Agree with your assessment totally. For me I read reviews of folks who have consumed a particular wine. If say 90% of folks recommend a particular wine, I give it a try. Even then it’s not fool proof

In the end it's always about whether you like it or not. The ratings are just guideposts to direct you towards something that may be good. Always best to use a bit of critical thinking. Thanks always for watching and commenting.

Hey friends! Who here uses wine ratings to make their selections at the store or for their cellar? Would be curious to know what you think of ratings and if they matter at all? Share here! #wineednesday

Maybe. Unless it’s from James Suckling. In which case it’s not to be taken seriously.

I'm on the fence about JS too. I think, he's talented and knows wine. But like Robert Parker, he's become something of a celebrity and influencer as of late and it's harder to be objective about his opinion. Thanks for weighing in.

@@wine-living I agree. With Suckling I think it’s a situation of a guy positioning himself much more towards the advertising/pitch man end of the spectrum than the consumer advocate end of the spectrum, but without being transparent about that positioning.
I’m not sure if you’re a whiskey guy or not but if you are (and maybe even if you aren’t) I’m sure your familiar with Ralfy and his reviews on RUclips. Not trying to promote him per se, but I did want to bring him up in terms being someone who, as a consumer advocate, has the right kind of relationship to the industry he reviews, which is that of an arm’s (or maybe several) distance.
I’m just starting to discover and enjoy your channel and I appreciate the opportunity to weigh in.

Wine ratings matter only when you find a wine reviewer whose palate comes close to yours otherwise they are useless. I review wine and tell my followers that they should see what wines I like and don't like then determine if they agree with me. If they do agree with me then they can reasonably be assured that the next wine I review will meet their expectations. This can be broken down into varietals as well. If for instance, one of my followers agrees with me on Cabernets then they can follow my opinions on that varietal. If on the other hand, they disagree with me on Cabernets then that varietal would not be on they would follow me on.
