I never understood the “best handling sport quad” thing. Great machine, was so pumped when it came out, but 50 inches wide and 18” tires is a huge advantage. I still fell the yfz is the best handling machine. Anyway great review! Cool machine to own!
Definitely the lowest center of gravity and I was really impressed with some of the attention to detail in the design, but I can see the YFZ as a better off track machine stock..
I owned a 2006 LTR450 and a 2009 YFZ450R and hands down the LTR was a way better handling machine , I’ve owned 250r , KFX450R, LTR450 , banshees , YFZ450R and the LTR is and was the best machine ever made

Yeah brother.. It's normally one or a combination of 3 possible things.. The fuel system is crazy.. 1st thing to check is the swirl filter under the tank, that gets clogged easily.. Mine looked like a used coffee pouch.. They're fairly easy to replace.. Next is the fuel pump by the riders left leg, the filter on that can get clogged as well and last is the injector which is under the as well towards the seat.. It could be any one or combination of those things.. The swirl filter and injector are fairly cheap, a pump is on the higher side. Good luck 👍
YOOOOO... Just the other day I was wondering about how much I liked the z400 tough as nails loved them so I very curious how well the 450s are on trails before I decide to purchase one ... Shame they quit making them tho so I'll have to settle for a used one I'd say but idc lol
I bought my 06ltr a few years ago, it had a cherry bomb on it with air lid cut and fit with an outer wear screen and after market exhaust. The cherry bomb was pushing too much fuel and it was getting in the oil making it easy to stall and back fire so I took it off and put a power commander on it. Just watch for the rev extend plug to burn out and ruin the air fuels

The LTR is kind of a mixed bag.. On one hand it's probably one of, if not the best 450 race quad ever built.. On the other, it can be temperamental and the aftermarket support isn't as good as a 450r or yfz... If you were doing mx, I'd say yeah definitely go for it.. But for xc it's a little wide and geared high.. That's not a big issue because you can just change the sprockets.. We see guys race xc on them all the time, but it's fewer every year.. If you want to get serious about racing and building your quad, it might be a better idea to go with something more common.. Check out mid south XC they might have races near you..
@@keepgrinding99 Endless aftermarket support on that one.. Like I said, I love LTRs, they're definitely my favorite, but if you're getting into racing you're gonna want parts to be readily available! Good luck brother, let us know how you make out!
The trx450 is going have by far the best aftermarket support.. I prefer the ltr450 but they can be finicky and the 09s and up had transmission issues.. I wouldn't get a ds450 unless it was mint and fairly cheap.. They were good machines but there wasn't a ton of them so parts would be hard to find..
Just bought an ltr. Haven't really rode it bc I see oil on the dip stick but not in the bottom end where u put 400ml. Is there something wrong with that?
If you run it a little and the oil is showing good on the dip stick I think you're gonna ok.. But search ltr oil change because I remember watching a racer doing a video that explained it... I haven't changed the oil in this one yet
We've been looking for awhile, only found one other in that last few months in decent shape but it wasn't running because it had been sitting for 10 years... By the time we tried to message the guy it was already gone.. They're tough to find..

Had the same problem with mine. It’s most likely the swirl filter under the tank. Bad design. Delete it and run a in-line fuel filter with at least a 32 micron filtration and you’ll be all good.
Dont know why sport quads are not as popular as they once were i prefer it over getting stuck in the mud on a 4x4 to messy and to much work i love whippin through trails and changing gears
I'm sorry I missed this comment.. the kfx450 didn't come out until 08, they weren't popular with racers but we like them as trail machines. They should be considered a really good 400cc class atv vs a racer 450.. The ltr was way ahead of its time, we had an 08 yfz450 and it didn't compare well in anyway against the ltr.. New YFZs do, but they had some significant changes from 2009 and up..
Actually yes.. We got a second LTR450 to do trail mods.. We found the original OEM parts on this one, all the way down to the safety DVD that came with it when you buy em.. We decided this one would have as few wrenches turned on it as possible and left completely stock. Our other one is ready to go, same quad, very clean in White. We're waiting on an OEM graphics kit to come in then we'll do a trail update and hopefully a comparison to a new YFZ...

Good trail quad! Had 2 of them in the past, went to the yfz450
Because?
@@negomiltos1712 strictly cause I'm a yamaha fan. And they have the only 450 sport quad still in production.
@raydelfa1125 - Taking brand Fandom out of the equation, which one would you say is better?
God I love you guys...I just bought a trx 450r because of you.
That's awesome!!!
I wish I never sold my 06 trx450r
love the ltr450 . its my favorite handling 450 of all . it even handles a spot on the trail at the training compound i ride at , better than my 250r . in fact its getting rebuilt by Jeremiah Jones at this moment and my buddy will be getting it back at Loretta Lynns mx national . it was blown up at Ariona pass mx national a couple weeks ago lol . so long story short im going to get to ride a Jeremiah Jones built ltr450 at Lorettas lol . i have a test ride video of it before jones got it , i should do another and post them on youtube
Jeremiah Jones is another legend I should have mentioned.. He's from our neck of the woods too..
@@DirtObseXXion sweet yall should meet up . i met this chick that bought his old track while i was at decker training in the off season . she was the former champ trying to get the title back
I have a LTR and I took out the stock fuel filter and got an inline filter, runs perfectly fine.
We're keeping this one 100% stock. We got a 2nd one to set up for trails.. These things are incredible quads!
dude, thats so nasty!!!! im so glad u guys got a 450, and what a 450 to pick! love it
Thanks man!!
Awesome vid dude. I have an 08 and I feel like I own something super special. Anyway where did you get the old lt commercial footage from?
I know what you mean... I found those commercials on RUclips.. I geek out on old atv and motorcycle commercials.. They're friggen hilarious
Beautiful unit love my 08!
Sweet! Thanks!!!
Had an 05. Best race quad!
Great machine for sure!
I was looking at one of these but didn't get one for the same reason you're stated. I sold my 450R because it wasn't real good for the slow trail riding I do either thing looks awesome though
Fuel issue is normally the swirl filter, delete it and go with a good inline filter that should take care of bogging issue
Yep, that was part of it for sure.. Looked like a coffee filter when I changed it
Where can I get an inline filter for one at?
I also have one super clean condition it's a beast
Awesome!
Bought an '06 when new. Still have the bike today. Never had a fuel system issue but had some funny fouled spark plug problems. If the issue still persists throw a new plug in it.
I owned a 2006 LTR450 and a 2009 YFZ450R and hands down the LTR was a way better handling machine , I’ve owned 250r , KFX450R, LTR450 , banshees , YFZ450R and the LTR is and was the best machine ever made
That thing is a beauty! When i was waiting for my Raptor order to come in i had an opportunity to buy one . Same exact color combo as yours and was just as clean, I couldn't believe it . I did pass on it to just wait for the Raptor. Would have been nice to have it in the stable too! I look forward to the build up. I got to get out to your neck of the woods to ride one of these days, I really enjoy your videos. 🤘
I'll always have a Raptor.. It's the second machine that can revolve around a little bit.. Yeah you should definitely head east and see some trees!!!
@@DirtObseXXion without a doubt. Im a native ny'er moved here 10 yrs ago. Tired of dust and ...dust lol. Miss me some good woods trails! Although i do love that I can leave my driveway and drive anywhere really.
Pretty sure I'll be at popcorn this weekend, hope I can get to meet you. What class will you be running? I have a red trx450 with a blue seat.... Great video btw.
I think the Viking is planning on it 👍
@@DirtObseXXion are you going?
It was great to meet you today, sorry for your bad luck. Where did that wire come from?
Big John who used to drive the factory Suzuki rig said you have to change the fuel filters often. That is likely the issue.
Do the Z-400 fuel injection models have the same issues? I’m on a 03 carbureted Z-400 and love it. It has been a great bike.
I own couple of the LTR’s and i had some fuel issues as well, most likely it will be the fuel regulator under the fuel tank or the ECU. Good Luck.
Cool thanks
It’s so underrated!
Got an 08 ltr450 and it’s having the same issues that you talked about towards the end, I know this video was 3 years old if you could please lmk what it was and how you fixed it I would really appreciate it
Yeah brother..
I'd say the z400 is a better trail machine, faster off the line too believe it or not..
I just bought an ltr a day ago. The dip stick reads fine but the bottom end cap I can't see the oil in. Is that a problem?
@@forgotten1601 sounds like an ltr.although mine I put the right amount in and doesn't even show on the stick lol
My ltr is bogging out when hitting the front brakes any ideas on why it does that? Loved the vid btw
Only on deceleration? I'm not sure why braking would cause it but I'm starting with the swirl filter and working my towards the fuel pump..
@@DirtObseXXion yeah I changed the swirl filter and it still does it so il look into the fuel pump thanks
Yo - why dont you do an update video of your Sportsman 1000. Reliability? Problems? Upgrades? Updated Thoughts? Im sure you know that many people have areas of concerns about non japanese quads - and hey I know you ride the heck out of your sportsman - If its holding up great - I think many of us normal riding folks have nothing to worry about. lol. Thanks for the Videos - Keep up the good work brother
It's getting an XC style build done on it, should be done in a few weeks.. The build is for ATVonDemand so it will be featured there before we do another video on it..
either the injector, pitcock, or filter.
Yep! This one still has the swirl filter and it looked like a coffee filter when I replaced it.
I really miss these bikes. Shame what happened to the 450's. Hell, sport quads in general.
Definitely sucks
Most of my Motorcycles have been from Suzuki including my current 650 Vstrom. I Bought a 2003 Polaris 500 because it was a good deal.
I've had some Suzuki bikes too but this is my first Suzuki ATV
Hard to find one of these nowadays
Yes it is, and when you do find them they are $$$$.. We've had some very solid offers on this one but it's not gonna go anywhere
I love the middle exhaust. And the rear plastics. And they had a nice comfy seat compared to other 450s
@@johnnydrama8709 They were just designed better than everything else in every way (except fuel system) the center of gravity and suspension is phenomenal right outta the box
@@DirtObseXXion how do u fix that fuel problem
@@johnnydrama8709 Replace the swirl filter, pump, and injector.. Some guys do an inline filter instead of the factory swirl filter but we wanted to keep this machine as close to stock as possible.. The fuel system is just very early fuel injection tech so it's prone to issues
My buddy has one these for sale. Reason I mention this is because I plan on trying to start racing some next season. Is this a good one to start off with? I wanna try do some gncc and arena cross if there's any near Georgia. Thanks for any input
@@DirtObseXXion thanks for the advice prob stick with my original plan then. The honda trx450r it's always been my favorite
@@keepgrinding99 Endless aftermarket support on that one.. Like I said, I love LTRs, they're definitely my favorite, but if you're getting into racing you're gonna want parts to be readily available! Good luck brother, let us know how you make out!
Where’s the other video
That's a nice ltr 👍
Thanks!

I’m looking at getting a 450 but don’t know whether to get the ds450, the trx450er, or a ltr450. What do you recommend
The trx450 is going have by far the best aftermarket support.. I prefer the ltr450 but they can be finicky and the 09s and up had transmission issues.. I wouldn't get a ds450 unless it was mint and fairly cheap.. They were good machines but there wasn't a ton of them so parts would be hard to find..
sad that yami doesn't have a nice stock sounding exhaust as the ltr
Can u lug the Suzuki at all on a casual trail ride? I’ve never owned a Suzuki
No definitely not.. It's very high strung. A z400 would be a much better trail machine
Hell yea I love my ltr
🤘
Just bought an ltr. Haven't really rode it bc I see oil on the dip stick but not in the bottom end where u put 400ml. Is there something wrong with that?
If you run it a little and the oil is showing good on the dip stick I think you're gonna ok.. But search ltr oil change because I remember watching a racer doing a video that explained it... I haven't changed the oil in this one yet
how often do ya find those in that good a shape for the year ?
We've been looking for awhile, only found one other in that last few months in decent shape but it wasn't running because it had been sitting for 10 years... By the time we tried to message the guy it was already gone.. They're tough to find..
@@DirtObseXXion yeah that would be the same with utilities too some of those are hard to find that aint all ragged out and shit hell some of em are wantin an ungodly expensive price for em even the junk ones are goin for high dollar these days but those good deals are out there if a person is willin to look for em
@@knightimusprime25 Yep, just gotta be ready to pull the trigger when the time comes..
@@DirtObseXXion indeed and ive gotten some damn good deals over the years and made some bad ones too hell my latest one i got an 2000 rancher es 4x4 for $100 but it sat for long time and is a high milage machine but still too nice a 4 wheeler to just let go to waste so no more than i gave for it im gonna put a few dollars into it and bring it back to life
Had the same problem with mine. It’s most likely the swirl filter under the tank. Bad design. Delete it and run a in-line fuel filter with at least a 32 micron filtration and you’ll be all good.
I changed it but by the time I changed it the battery was dead, so we'll see...

Zuki has always been at the bottom of my big 4 list, but I have to admit, the LTR is a wicked lookin machine...

Thanks Doc! I just like looking at it..
Dont know why sport quads are not as popular as they once were i prefer it over getting stuck in the mud on a 4x4 to messy and to much work i love whippin through trails and changing gears
How do these compare to the yfz450r and the kfx450r of the same year?
I'm sorry I missed this comment.. the kfx450 didn't come out until 08, they weren't popular with racers but we like them as trail machines. They should be considered a really good 400cc class atv vs a racer 450.. The ltr was way ahead of its time, we had an 08 yfz450 and it didn't compare well in anyway against the ltr.. New YFZs do, but they had some significant changes from 2009 and up..

I have the exact same LTR
Nice!
I rode it!
cool

any updates on this beast
Actually yes.. We got a second LTR450 to do trail mods.. We found the original OEM parts on this one, all the way down to the safety DVD that came with it when you buy em.. We decided this one would have as few wrenches turned on it as possible and left completely stock. Our other one is ready to go, same quad, very clean in White. We're waiting on an OEM graphics kit to come in then we'll do a trail update and hopefully a comparison to a new YFZ...
