    1. I was not sure that I would like the effect and so in my mind worse case I could change the fence panels, not ideal but this could be done.
    2. I have other concrete elements in the garden and when the garden is viewed as a whole the concrete posts pull in the other concrete in the garden giving it a consistant feel.
    3. I have seen other concrete posts painted and I am not sure I like the effect. Plus once painted you can never go back to the natural effect (fence panels can easily be replaced).
    4. If I painted the posts I would need to paint the concrete gravel boards too and I did not want to create a hugh job!
    5. Finally if I was going to change the colour of the posts I think i would clad them with timber to disguise them and paint these black.
    The second question has been which stain did I use?
    Ans. I used Ronseal Trade Fence Stain in Tudor Black
    Hope this helps :)

    I could have told you it would be stunning. From the time I was a child in the 50s, my father painted our house black. Our neighbors thought he was crazy, until they saw my mother's wisteria, gladiolus, lilacs, Japanese maple, etc. POP from the contrast. He was an artist and truly knew what he was doing. I was at someone’s garden wedding. They had hired a crew with blowtorches to blacken the wood fence a few years before the wedding took place. The charred surface was brushed with oil. The Japanese call this process yakisugi, and apparently it is a time tested way to preserve timber exposed to the elements.

    • @kristinebailey6554
      @kristinebailey6554 3 года назад +6

      YES ! It chars the surface and it can preserve the wood naturally for 100 years or more. Unless it is severely charred though it can still show a busy wood grain, which would detract from the plant scaping too.

    Moved house during lockdown and just completed painting the fencing, that borders on all sides around our new garden, in black (Ronseal 'Blackbird'). It has taken a lot of tins as the existing fencing is lap panelled, rough and very parched, but it now looks absolutely stunning. The only issue is the messy wild doves with their own very contrasting ideas on how the fences should be coloured. Still the new trees and climbers will look fantastic against the fences come the summer.

    I'm glad that you're promoting dark, almost black, paint for exterior use. I think it's an easy way to sophisticate the look of any structure (fence, garage, shed, house, trellis). In fact, "the worse the architecture, the darker the paint" almost always works! Darker paint on Modernist houses or Craftsman are flattering, as both styles were meant to blend into their settings. Even the Victorian houses often used up deep rich organic colors to add a complex look that highlighted the body of the house, the window frame, and window sash. Deep olive, umber, Sienna reds were common. Lighter colors and pastels are usually unsuccessful and don't allow the house to set gently into it's environment.

    I ABSOLUTELY love your painted fence for the reasons you stated. I used to own a custom picture framing store and discovered the beauty of black backgrounds for ANY artwork. It is restful to the eye, allowing the art, or in this case the plantings, to shout out their own colors. So when I installed my privacy fence and many other garden structures I used a semi-transparent waterproofing stain tinted black walnut which starts out black and fades to a very dark brown with grain showing, which mimics the color of tree trunks when they're wet. I prefer the natural look rather than a "hardscaped" look.

      I garden in the central valley of California, where the temperature gets above 100°F (38°C) about 20 days in the summer. The infra-red
      radiating off my unpainted redwood fence kills plants. Painting them black would make it worse. The coast of Oregon and Washington states

    I like it. I would have painted the fence posts too because my eye tends to go to them being a different colour than the black. But perhaps that might be too much black. Either way, well done!

      Hi thanks for the feedback and I did consider trying to cover the fence posts. In my garden though I have other concrete elements so the overall effect works well.

    Hi Mark, a black backdrop really makes foliage pop, but I'd paint your posts too, so it looks seamless.

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching. This has been a common response and there were a few reasons why I didn't and haven't. 1. I was not sure that I would like the effect and so in my mind worse case I could change the fence panels, not ideal but this could be done. 2. I have other concrete elements in the garden and when the garden is viewed as a whole the concrete posts pull in the other concrete in the garden making it have a consistant feel. 3. I have seen other concrete posts painted and I am not sure I like the effect. Plus once painted you can never go back to the natural effect. 4. If I painted the posts I would need to paint the concrete gravel boards too and I did not want to create a hugh job! Finally if iIwas going to change the colour of the posts I think i would clad them with timber to discuise them and paint these black. Hope this helps and sorry for the long reply :)

    I've painted my backyard fence black as well and I simply love it. It does give it a contemporary feel. I bought a 17 litre bucket of latex driveway sealer for like $25 and used that to paint the fence ... and I still have over half of it left. Yes, driveway sealer works just fine and gives the wood a nice texture and additional protection.

    I hear you Mark! I loved Andy Sturgeon's show too. My next door neighbours have replaced half their fence panels so we've got half orange, half grey with yellow trellis 😑. Painting it black is my summer job. Congratulations on an amazing garden, you can tell its a real labour of love 👏👏👏

    My husband saved our piecemeal fence, then painted it a dark grey to hide the imperfections and repairs, and match the deck/pergola on our mid-century home. I hated the look of this fence before but now I love it. It is the nicest colored fence in the neighborhood and looks so sharp. We get compliments all the time. I imagine black would have a similar effect for all the reasons you listed. The garden and house pop.

We have black chain link fencing around our backyard with about 4 wood paneled sections with arches with a big swinging gate and so now I'm feeling inspired to paint those 4 wood sections black!
