  • How to make Pasta in a pressure cooker when the meat is frozen solid and the pasta is uncooked. You'll have the complete meal, cooked to perfection in 20 minutes! Easy and delicious & done fast as lightening!
    Put into pressure cooker in the following order:
    1 lb. of frozen meat
    3 cups of uncooked penne or ziti
    2-1/2 cups of beef broth
    3 cups of pasta sauce
    1 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. pepper
    1 tsp. Italian seasoning
    1/2 tsp. garlic powder
    1/2 tsp. onion powder (optional)
    1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
    Close and lock the lid to the pressure cooker. Put the vent on closed. Set the timer for 20 minutes. If using a stove top pressure cooker, when it comes up to pressure, set the timer for 20 minutes. Break up the meat when the pressure is diffused and ENJOY!!

    I don't own a pressure cooker cause I've been scared to use one, but that looks awesome. It's just a throw together meal and that's the best thing about it. You adapt ingredients to your liking, I hardly ever follow recipes to a T. Looks yum :)

    You gave me my laugh for a day; are you Pennsylvania Dutch?? I am and I love the way you use ALL your ingredients so as not to let anything go to waste!! Even rinsing out the pasta jar; I was wondering if you would and you didn't let me down....
    I will do it this way and get back to you...THANKS!!

      Hi Bruce. I was raised in Upstate NY and moved to Alabama in the 70's..what sounds Pennsylvania Dutch? I am totally NOT offended! I should have cut up fresh onion instead of using the powder but I followed the recipe (and I've made this many times) to the letter. Try it with fresh onion and if you use the entire 16oz box of pasta, it isn't necessary to increase the time. The pc adjusts. In this video, the pasta was overcooked (but good!) Happy eating and let me know how you like it! Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад +1

      +Marie Agostinelli I'm always hesitant recommending a pc. My favorites are Cooks Essentials and Wolfgang Puck. I've "heard" Cuisinart has a good track record as well as Instant Pot but I've never bought or used either of the last two I mentioned. One brand I would NOT buy is Elite. They're faulty and the company does not honor the warranty and jerks you around when something goes wrong (and it did with 2 of their pc's) I hope this helps and thank you for watching and commenting!

    I am about to make this... It looks so good! I am a little confused though... What pressure do you use to cook it?

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      Hi Lynn, If your pc has a hi, med, low....pressure on hi...if not, just go with the pressure of whatever your machine uses. If it doesn't get done it will be either a faulty pc or the cooker pressures at low and you'll have to adjust the time. I hope this helps and doesn't confuse you more. If using a stove top pc (not electric) use 15 psi. I hope this turns out well for you. It should. Let me know.

    Going to try this but will omit the broth and just use water so the pasta cooks as I don't want the broth to change the taste of the sauce. I think I would also try ground turkey and maybe add some sautéed mushrooms and onions at the end and eat this the next day. Should freeze well.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  10 лет назад

      Hi Stacy, you fix the pasta any way you want. Just use the order I suggested. The broth enhances the flavor of the dish, and does not change it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    one thing I keep wondering about pressure cooking, is usually when I cook hamburger meat I drain the fat, but If I follow your recipe I won't drain the fat isn't that greasy? It didn't look like it. But when I don't drain it on the stove its very greasy. I use the cheapest hamburger meat, I guess for pressure cooking I should get the better meat??

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      Hi Iwannalilone, If you don't want a lot of grease, you must use leaner beef. Also, the grease will be on top and you can suction it off. Thanks for watching and for your question!

    I just bought wolfgangs 8qt pressure cooker. I made a standing Rib Roast. I looked for a recipe to no avail. I cooked it first for 20 min. W 2 cups broth. It wasn't cooked and didn't look to appetizing. I cooked it another 15 min. Med rare. But looked like a drowned roast. It was sitting in broth. Vert dissapointed. Thanks for your help. I will try your pasta under pressure.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  8 лет назад +2

      +Your Jusuru Hi I'm sorry you didn't cook that properly due to lack of a recipe. First of all, nothing browns in a pressure cooker so you put a couple of tablespoons of oil in the bottom of your PC (pressure cooker) and season your meat or roast and brown it in the oil you let heat up in your cooker, remove the meat. Then pour in your liquid. Put a rack in the bottom of the pc and put your browned and seasoned meat on top of the rack.....not in the liquid. then set the pressure time. Not all meat or poultry will cook on a rack. It depends on the type of meat AND the type of results you are looking for. I hope this helps you some. Thank you for watching and commenting or I never would have known your problem. Linda

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  8 лет назад +2

      +Your Jusuru Hello again, I want to tell you that pc's are great for tenderizing tougher cuts of meat such as chuck or round etc. If I was cooking a crown rib roast that's a tender and expensive cut of meat, I'd do it the traditional way.....in the oven. No need to pressure cook an already tender and succulent meat of any kind. Hope this helps!

    Loved your video and your use of what you have in the kitchen, because I do too. My question is, I don't have an electric PC, but instead have a stove top one. Do I start the 20 minutes from the time my PC starts to rattle or when I begin cooking as I don't want to over cook my pasta. I look forward to your thoughts, and again, thanks for sharing this recipe.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      Hi Chickie Poo, the stove top pc works exactly the same as an electric. Don't start timing until you've reached pressure. For a stove top-which actually reaches 15 psi (most electric will only reach 11 or 12 psi at max) I would cook 17 minutes. If not completely done, place the lid back on (but not closed or locked) and let it finish cooking from just the heat of the burner. I hope this helps!

    • @chickiepoo5159
      @chickiepoo5159 9 лет назад

      ***** Thank you very much for your response, it was very helpful, but I think I might still need a little help. I made the pasta twice and each time it burned to the bottom even though I had it on what I believe is locked, not steam. I have a Fresco stove top pressure cooker that has only two settings. One looks like a capital "I" or roman numeral 1 and the other is a little picture of what looks like steam. I've been putting it on the "I" stetting instead of the steam, started it on high until the little red seal pops up, and then I turned down the @items/it/img/arrow-10x10.png to medium. Have I misunderstood the settings? Should I let it slowly build up steam on medium heat until it starts to rock back and forth instead of starting it on high temperature? I'm concerned that my pasta will be overcooked and mushy. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      Hi Chickie Poo, you're pot is getting too, too HOT. You're using the correct setting of 1. The other selection is for steam just as you thought. Be sure to put the ingredients in the pot in the order I told you to and when your pc starts whistling, cut the burner down to low (but not real low) so you have a slow but steady stream of steam. When it has pressure cooked 16 or 17 minutes, CAREFULLY take the pressure cooker to the sink and run cold water over the top until all the pressure is gone. Do NOT run the COLD water on a side that has a vent or some type of hole. When all the pressure is released, it's ready to eat. Your problem is leaving the cooker at too high. This should solve your troubles. Let me know and happy Thanksgiving!!

    • @chickiepoo5159
      @chickiepoo5159 9 лет назад

      ***** Okay, I've had my pressure cooker soaking for a couple of days but it was still charred black on the bottom after I scrubbed all of the burned stuff off that I could. I first tried vinegar and baking soda and that didn't work, but I finally did get my PC cleaned like new by boiling a can of coke which eventually worked with some elbow grease. I'm going to try making this pasta under pressure again today because it looks really good in your video and smelled awesome whilst it was cooking on my stove...so wish me luck! I'll let you know how it turns out. Oh, and although I'm in Canada, our Thanks giving has already passed, but Happy Thanksgiving to you all in the States! Here in Canada we still have black Friday to look forward to for all the great deals we used to have to cross the boarder for. The stores here have finally gotten smart and figured out a way to keep us Canadians from crossing the border into the USA for all the great deals so happy Thanksgiving and happy shopping!

    • @chickiepoo5159
      @chickiepoo5159 9 лет назад

      ***** No, it didn't work, even though I did exactly as you said. I put the ingredients in the exact order as stated, I closed the lid, and instead of starting it on high heat, I put it on to medium high until the little button popped up, and then turned it right down to low heat letting it rock for 17 minutes. As soon as the timer went off I took the pressure cooker to the sink and drizzled a steady stream of cold water on top until the pressure dissipated, then opened it up immediately. But it still burnt again!!! My pasta didn't look like yours did in the video. All of my pasta was still sitting at the bottom right where I left it and any of it that was touching the bottom is charred black with the puffy bits sticking up. All of the liquid was on top and didn't mix with the pasta until I took the spoon and scraped it from the bottom. So the rest looks fine now that I've stirred it, but it has the taste of burnt infused throughout the entire pot. I noticed in your video that your pressure cooker is non stick whereas mine is stainless steel. If the pasta is all staying at the bottom of the pot whilst its cooking, maybe I should be putting it in last or giving it a stir first? I hate that I will have to soak my pot again, boil another can of coke, and use more elbow grease to get it clean, but I really don't have much of a choice now. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Just for your information, I did a roast beef in this pressure cooker and it turned out great, so what am I doing wrong?

      Hi Kathy, if you want your pasta el dente, don't pressure it as long as I did & it should turn out just fine..don't worry about the liquid, that's not what makes the pasta soft but what allows it to come to and retain the proper pressure BUT don't go overboard with it!! Having said that, I'll add this: all pc's are NOT the same. The time it takes mine to achieve the results I want (and I admit mine was too soft on this video) may not be the same amount of time in yours. You'll have to get to know your pc and know what works for you...if you follow my recipe and use the entire box of pasta, start with 15 minutes, test it, if it's not done enough, put it back under pressure and go about 2 more minutes. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions or concerns, just leave me another message. I'll be happy to help you any way I can.

      +Shami Devita Hi Shami, this pressure cooker didn't have ANY buttons. All it had was a dial for the amount of time you want it under pressure. In this case it was 20 minutes...so manually set your pressure cooker to 20 minutes on the highest pressure. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope to see you back soon.

    I'm making Spaghetti with my new Electric Pressure Cooker and will be using these ingredient's: 1 pound of thawed ground turkey (15% Fat), 1 lb. Spaghetti Whole Wheat Noodles and 2 lb 13 oz of Marinara Sauce. Therefore, should I brown the ground turkey or completely cook it first (with w/out Oil) then add how many Cups of Water then Sauce then Seasoning's? Also, how long should I cook entire meal (10 minutes, etc)?

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      Hi msrockinrobin40...you can't cook long, thin spaghetti in a pressure cooker and you didn't specify. You can brown your ground turkey using a little oil in the bottom of the pc pot. Break it up in the pc like you were going to make sloppy Joes etc. the water and sauce will remain the same, also the seasonings. If these are NOT long spaghetti and using a whole wheat ziti, rigatoni or something along those lines, 9 minutes should be sufficient. Let the pressure release naturally. I hope this helps.

      ***** How many cups of Water for 16 oz Whole Wheat Spag. Noodles and other ingredient's mention in original post.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      msrockinrobin40 Hi again! You are using WAY too much Marinara Sauce. I would use 3 cups (just like the video for 1 lb. of pasta) and 2-1/2 cups beef broth (just like the video) You can substitute water for the beef broth if you want but the sauce won't be as rich tasting. All you've changed here is the use of thawed turkey instead of frozen beef...other than the cooking time, the recipe will remain the same. Pressure 9 minutes and let it release naturally.......and, cut way back on the amount of marinara you plan to use. I hope this helps!

    • @msrockinrobin40
      @msrockinrobin40 9 лет назад

      ***** I pre-cooked the ground turkey, used Ragu Spaghetti Sauce but didn't have beef broth. Therefore with my ingredient's mentioned in 1st post, I should have used 5-1/2 Cups of Water for 1 lb of Pasta (instead of 3). I cooked for 9 minutes and it came out good but noodles a little tough (prefer them tender) might be related to the whole wheat spag. noodles or need to add the extra water and cook 5 minutes longer. Thanks for replying!

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      Hi Msrockinrobin40, you used 1 lb of pasta which is what I used. When you pressure cook you don't need 5-1/2 cups of water. 2 & 1/2 cups was the correct amount. And the pasta sauce (marinara in your case) would be perfect using 1 jar of the Ragu Sauce...you don't need all that water in a pressure cooker. 1-1/2 to 2 cups of liquid is all that is needed (do not count the marinara sauce) Cooking 5 minutes longer will turn your noodles softer than what you want...if they were a "little" to al dente, go with 2 minutes longer and no more. Where are you getting your information because it's not correct?

    Sorry but I am agreeing with rambam321 on this.
    I tried this tonight but used chicken instead of ground beef. While the chicken was okay, and I mean just okay, the pasta was completely mush. The whole family, besides the dog, did not like the consistency of the meal. Overall, by the time this dish was cooked I could have prepared it normally with much better results.
    I will admit that I am new to pressure cooking and this was my first attempt but if this is the normal process then I'll just stick with quick cooking certain meats and maybe learn some canning techniques while sticking with regular cooking methods.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      Hi Brian, I suspect the chicken wasn't frozen AND not in a 1 lb. lump. This is crucial for this recipe. Also, chicken cooks differently than beef. For the 1st time using a pc, I would've stuck to the original recipe. You're too inexperienced at this point to change anything about a pc recipe. I'm sorry this didn't work out for you but I promise you, this is a working and good tasting recipe. I actually over cooked this by a few minutes which wasn't necessary. As I've said in another video, get to know your pc, whether it works fast or slow or right on. They are all different. Don't blame the recipe when it's human error which was probably rambam321's problem also. You cannot use the same cooking time on frozen meat as you do thawed or the same time cooking beef as you do chicken. This was not my personal recipe. It came out of a pressure cooker cookbook and has worked for me many, many times. I'm sure your pc came with a recipe booklet. Try some of the recipes in it before you venture out to new ones. GET TO KNOW your pc. and I'm certain your results will be different and pleasing. I'm so sorry this was a bad experience for you but try again when you've had more experience for much better results. I'm glad you've taken the time to comment about your experience so I could at least try to help correct it. It also sounds as if you pc'd too long. Let me know how your next venture goes and thanks for commenting.

      Hi.
      You're assumptions were incorrect,
      1. I was using frozen chicken two (2) lbs of whole chicken breast, not cut up, two separate one (1) lb blocks of chicken breast.
      2. Yes, I do know that chicken cooks differently than beef.
      3. As far as changing recipes, I have cooking meals for myself, my family and for guest for well over 15 years and know how to alter a recipe slightly for differing results.
      As far as blame, I was not blaming the recipe nor was I stating that the meal tasted bad. What I did state was the pasta was too mushy for my liking. I am sure others may feel differently and other may have had better results. Maybe my pressure cooker is larger than the cooker you used or than those that others used. Which could be the case as the rise is psi due to heating of the fluid is dependent on the volume of free space. In which case items on the bottom of the pan would have burned some (like in my case).
      I will learn my pressure cooker and I may invest in a smaller one for the smaller meals. Maybe for future reference you could include the volume size of the cooker you used to prepare your meal. If it's electronically control or an old fashion stove top model then state that as well as they also work differently.
      I may try it again in the future but if this is common with pasta then i'll leave the pasta to the tried and true boiling method. :-)
      Thanks again for the recipe and your feedback.

      I used a 6 quart electric pc. You used a lot more meat than I did and I pressured an extra 3 minutes since I used more pasta (which was a mistake) The pc would've adjusted itself for the extra pasta (taking longer to come to pressure) and mine was overcooked but still delicious. I will always be using a 6 qt. electric OR a 6 quart stove top and I'll remember to mention that next time. Try the pasta recipe I have on my channel with artichokes, sweet peppers and Italian sausage links. It truly is delicious and the meat is not frozen for this recipe. I wish you better luck in the future and I'm sorry the recipe didn't come out right for you. Your results are not common when pressuring pasta. If you add more meat or in your case, chicken, it will take longer to come to pressure and over cook your pasta in the process. Perhaps that's exactly what happened but not having been there, I don't know for certain.

    I also found that that meat was not completely cooked in the center and I had to close up the pot and cook it a little longer, which then made the Pasta overcooked and mushy. The problem may be due to a difference in the functions and pressure of your cooker vs mine. My cooker has 5 different functions, each with different pressure settings. You do not show the front of your pot or tell us what cooking function you are using or what pressure you are cooking with. That information would be very helpful.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад +1

      I'm so sorry you had that problem. I've never had a failure, never. My pc only has 1 function. I have to set the time myself so knowing most pc's cook at about 12, that's what it cooked on. Unless your pc has high and low settings, I can't imagine why your meat wasn't cooked completely. Mine is a WP (in this video)...I "had" 3 electric pc's at that time. You have to put everything in the pot in the same order as I did in this video (that's what the author of this recipe said) I'm sorry, I can't imagine why your meat didn't cook all the way through. I called the manuf. of the Elite and was told everything cooks at the same pressure, the presets are for convenience and do not change the amount of pressure you're using. I don't know if that's true of all of them but I would assume so. Again, I'm sorry for your problem and hope it won't happen again.

    • @HighConsciousness1
      @HighConsciousness1 9 лет назад

      +Janet Cadigan The meat should be cooked in the pressure cooker first than start over with the pasta etc for a quick 6 minute cook - that's about how long it takes for pasta to cook in a pressure cooker.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      +Janet Cadigan My pressure cooker doesn't have ANY preset buttons. All I do is set the time which is always high. The presets on the fancier ones only preset the time not the pressure settings (except a few that do have a low, med and high). I've made this recipe many times and have never had a failure. The meat remains whole until you break it up, once you see it isn't cooked thru, remove it in whole pieces, remove everything else in the pot, put the meat back in, break it up and let it finish cooking. This shouldn't take long. Tent the rest of the meal with foil so it won't get cold. I've never had a problem and I'm sorry you have. Learn your pc (I stated this on another pc recipe) They won't all cook the same. Oh, my pc is a Wolfgang Puck. Again, I'm sorry you had a problem with this recipe. Thanks for the info and for watching.

      +HighConsciousness1 Hello, sorry it doesn't work that way. It should all cook at the same time. You cook yours how you want to but this recipe called for it all to go in together, but the recipe states for the ingredients to go in in the order I gave it. Thanks for the comment!

    how many people does this feed? I have a family of 6 and most recipes I have to double to make enough so I am wondering if I should double this and also if I would have enough room in a 4 qt cooker to double it

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад

      Hi Pamela, I used a 16oz box of penne...it should feed your family without doubling (depends on how much they eat) but this may be too much for a 4 quart pc. You use it all the time and would be the best judge of that. A pound of pasta should feed a family of 6. Feel free to use fresh onions and garlic if you want to. Let me know how you like this. I decided to try again. This time I set the pressure to 70 and it set itself to cook for 25 min. I currently have about 8 min left. I got it at walmart it's the power pressure cooker and it's electric. I will let you know how it turns out. Say a prayer!

      e kh Hi e kh, there should be absolutely no reason you can't cook frozen meat in a pressure cooker. That's the convenience of using one. It cooks much faster and it cooks from frozen. I want to say the pressure cooker itself is not working properly. This never should have happened. See if Walmart will let you exchange it for another one..tell them what happened. Because as I said, frozen food should never be a problem. I'm so sorry for your loss of food and ingredients. Let me know what happens when you exchange it. Just FYI, I had to return one for the same reason and it was brand new. It worked the first few times I used it and then it went haywire..they gladly took it back for exchange. I've had no problems so far with this one. Thanks for letting me know about your problem. I hope you'll exchange that one! Thanks for watching!!!

    As a pure bred Italian with the palette refined from a life long diet of home cooked Italian food, I must say this does not look too appetizing! The max cooking time for most pasta is 10-13 mins for an authentic "al dente" texture. You're recipe calls to "pressure cook" it for 20 mins! We can tell from the final product the pasta is overcooked and mush. After dinner most people spend 2-3 hours watching useless TV, let's try to sacrifice 20-30 of those minutes to devote to cooking something palatable to our kids. They deserve as much. I'm not bashing pressure cookers, I use them for duplicating a KFC recipe, or break down tough meats.

    • @Handsthatcook
      @Handsthatcook  9 лет назад +2

      I am also from a long line of Italian heritage. The "long" cooking time is to thoroughly cook the frozen meat...and I did over cook mine, thinking I needed to because I added extra pasta. As you can see, it wasn't necessary. The taste is good for a quick meal and the pasta is usually not over-cooked. So my advice to you is not to make it. BTW, I personally don't like al dente. The 20 minutes just unthaws the frozen meat and really doesn't effect the pasta. But I pressured it 2 minutes longer because of the extra cup of dried pasta and it wasn't needed. You can also use fresh ingredients (onions, garlic etc.) it's your choice. I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks for commenting.
