Developers cannot be creative in an enviroment like this, corpo wants the next Fortnite, the next warzone, the next helldivers... But they don't understand how important are single players games, and that is normal to put just 20-30 hours to a game, finish it and go play the next one. What they don't understand is you don't get the next Fortnite, Call of Duty, Helldivers, etc by forcing developers to only work on high profile games. The origin of all those games came from passion. Passionate developers that wanted to make a good game led to the birth of Call of Duty. We have seen over and over again what happens when you force developers to work on something they don't care about. We get games like Redfall. That is where Xbox is headed.

Microsoft did a great job of fooling a lot of people into thinking Gamepass was doing much better than it actually was. Seems as if the higher ups finally had enough of losing money, and now the reality of game pass is about to kick in. It’s very hard to make money on subscription services. Even Netflix has only recently started making actual profits.

These dogshit companies hate the idea of consumers owning anything so much that they will continue with these systems that are detrimental to both them and the consumer, and everyone involved in making the product. Xbox actively harm the sales of these games, knowing they would be making more money on a regular sales model, just so that the customer never actually owns any of these games.

Right on the money, gentlemen. It's not only about making money. It's all about identity, trust and confidence. Nintendo understands the inner values of their products very well. Some people might dislike their games not getting discounted often, but it helps carve out the identity and value permanency of their products. I also agree with you John: subscriptions and (extreme) discounts will only drive products to the bottom of the pile in the long run. Short term it may look like an interesting value proposition for individual consumers, but in the long haul people will care less for things they get for free or buy for just a few euros. Personal anecdote: Epic Games, its weekly free games. At first I wanted to get every weekly free game, but after a few months I started to care less. And now I almost never check which game is for free anymore. And it's not because all the free games are rubbish, as there seem to be some genuine jewels every few months. But again: for free, so there's no personal attachment at all. As strange as it might sound, my desire to own certain products is closely connected to how much money I pay for something. And I'm not the only one with that sentiment.

  • @simplymincy

Gamepass mistake is not really all about the numbers. It's about the initial roll out and convincing the consumers games should be cheap.
They had so many deals going on to get people in gamepass that was absurd that you end up conditioning the costumers that this is the cost of a game.
They should have priced it at $30 earlier on and then focus on delivering great games. Yes the subscriber numbers would not be as high but you have to think that people would still buy more games because they wouldn't feel the gamepass quality is there.
Think about it. There is no reason in the world that Netflix should cost more than gamepass.

@Drstrange3000 agreed. The deal was too good to be true. The cost had to come from somewhere. I get why Xbox did it tho. They had to win fans back over. They also pushed Playstation to offer something similar. Not as giving as gamepass but ps plus extra and premium would not be a thing without gamepass. At least I don't think so.

    • @simplymincy
      @simplymincy 2 месяца назад

@mondodimotori no disrespect but I'm not sure what you are saying here.
Yes, people will always complain about higher prices but the reality is people will pay full price for a game they feel is worth it.
Nintendo and Sony sells show that. Especially Nintendo. They have very strong anti consumer practices and very rarely have sales but people for those games.
Having said that, there are a good bit of publishers saying how bad game sales are for them. I would say the reason so many big AAA games are not selling as much is because of a lot of the games are pivoting towards live service styles or ips that have built up a loyal fanbase over the years have had their games restructured in a way that is no longer ideal for that former audience.
Lastly we only have so much time. So if each game these companies put out is set up to be a game that you have to clock in each day like a job to get the most of it, then sooner or later you are going to have people stop buying as many games as they use to, and stick to the game they invested hundreds of hours in.
These companies have in a way cannibalized themselves by all going after the same audience.

Its really sad to see this long decline of Xbox. When they hit the scene it felt like a rag tag team who was showing up to fight. They brought power, a unique perspective, they were the first to really adapt and implement online functionality at a broad scale, they were super kind to indie developers, and their backward compatibility was the best in the industry. I was rooting for them so much that the only generation I didnt prefer the Playstation platform was the PS3/360 era. Feels like Xbox is now being run by the same team that manages Excel over there.

If Xbox went with the windows direction it would need a console mode to the OS so it's easily useable on the TV with a controller. A PC by definition is an office computer used by a single person to do office related work and that is a very different expeiance to a system connected to TV screen with no desk to rest a mouse on. The differance between a TV and a monitor is a TV is the centre point of a room (not personal) and a monitor is used by a single person at a time and so it's a different expeance, the text will need to be bigger on a TV with bigger icons.

One thing Xbox and PlayStation have in common is that they keep ass fucking their consumers left and right. The only difference is that PlayStation has games so people just forget about how shitty they treat their consumers. And Sony knows it. They can put out a trailer or a shitty state of play and people will forget everything. At the end of the day people don't really give a shit. They don't care about layoffs, price hikes, policies etc. They just want to play games and that's not something Xbox has had in the past two generations beside a handful of okay exclusives. Xbox can't deflect. PlayStation can. PlayStation has made an equal amount of bad decisions since the start of PS4 but hey they bring quality games to the table. If PlayStation didn't have this they'd be in the same position as Xbox. Watch them deflect the helldivers thing next month with a state of play. They already tricked people and you don't hear about it as much as the first round of the helldivers fiasco.

Developing games for the specific hardware. It would still be a set hardware target, and the Xbox gaming experience doesn't need to really change at all. You can have you"xbox optimized" kinda library through the Microsoft store that is very plug and play just like before. Then you can have access to a wider pc library as well. These things don't necessarily have to be mutually exclusive. It just gives advanced users more options.

Xbox just listened to the gamers and to the media that have humiliated Arkane Austin for Redfall way too much (as if bad reviews weren't enough !). You can't make such noise about a game that you forced the boss himself to apologize and then expect the direction to validate new investments in the studio !
And for Tango Gameworks, the first to be shocked by its closure are the same that forget to talk about the big project that should have mde live the studio : Ghostwire Tokyo ! They almost validate MS on the closure by ghosting this game and giving only value to Hi-Fi Rush that was made by a very few people of the studio. Even Nakamura and Mikami abandonned the studio before MS did it too.
The first to hurt those studios were the players and the media. Xbox listened and both the reception and the figures were bad...

If they could just add an Xbox interface to windows and if that interface is switched to automatically upon connecting an xbox controller and also making sure that the dashboard is customisable, letting people add other store games and apps to that interface, all while making that the windows background tasks are running at the bare minimum or suspended, that itself will be a big win for Microsoft. Even much better will be the ability to start windows in xbox mode or windows mode and switching to the other mode as when required smoothly, just like switching between desktops. AMD/Nvidia(with ARM processors) could come up with Xbox performance class APUs certified by MS for running both windows and xbox and can be housed in a compact cabinet, like in a mini-PC or a little larger portable form factor.

The subscription model with every option available I find makes me start things and just stop soon after to go check something else out. I form no attachment. I notice this with retro ROM sets. I constantly start a game and just stop and forget about it. I usually go back and just play things I previously experienced. I have like 5 games on my retro list I absolutely feel I must play, and I'm afraid to even start them. I've developed a fear of commitment. Too much choice is turning out to be a burden in some ways. I guess it isn't the same as subscription, but it is in a way. I have one streaming subscription. Once everyone started setting up their own I opted out. As a result, i watch very little TV. I feel games are going to go the same way with this model. I also won't do digital only. I want to by a physical disk with the game on it and I want to know I can play it whenever I want. Otherwise, no money. I also avoid DRM like Denuvo, single player online requirements, and free to play and loot boxes and real money for costumes is just stupid. As a result of this nonsense, I end up purchasing fewer games. And they seem to come from smaller studios now. And if Nintendo would stop attacking the retro and emulation work people are doing, I would happily spend money on their platform and games. But until that nonsense stops, they get zero dollars from me either. You know what is missing? More corporate regulation, that is also enforced, and a dedicated department fighting for consumers that has teeth. I'm personally done being nickel and dimed to death.

They started and then stopped making hardware without ever truly committing to it, they failed to capitalize on ARM while dipping their toes in for a decade and eventually signed away five years of exclusivity to Qualcomm at a time when Qualcomm didn’t have any desktop class chips or any roadmap to get there, HoloLens and Windows VR both died on the vine, Windows 10 was accepted by Win7/XP holdouts but Win11 is an abomination, multitouch support remains spotty and half-baked……

I am a game collector that have some limited edition things, don't always need to get the highest price for all games but I buy more physically. I have all systems but maybe 10 games from Xbox, why? Because you have them in the library so no need to buy any of those. But Nintendo and Sony you have to buy them, and I have more units on those systems than anything. From ps1, and super Nintendo. I don't like digital anything but only in the graphics and software not my games

The Xbox we knew has been dead for a while, it has become something else, and unfortunately this is only the beginning.
there is a big lack of quality and no one seems to know which direction to go.
a huge lack of advertising as well.
here in France for example Xbox is almost non-existent and it's the same everywhere in Europe.

Great discussion as always Gents. Thanks for posting this up.
Although i (and we as a family) are mainly PS and Nintendo loyalists, with a hint of PC snobbery from my son…..I lament Xbox not becoming the competitor that PlayStation needs to keep it in check.
The huge reliance on third party exclusives (perhaps now changing 😉 with Square) has masked I think a shocking level of game pipeline management in PlayStation Studios. A stronger more competitive third player (and ideally challenging for first not floating a la dead fish in third place) would have meant Sony couldn’t sit back like they seem to have done (Insomnic excluded)

Bobby Kotick was right. Gamepass is value destroying. Its a stupid idea - the netflix of games. Most adults buy games and never complete them. Now you can just skip buying games, play on gamepass and forget them. The only way to do gamepass properly is to put 2 year old games on it. Even then it will kill lifetime sales of titles. You will never see huge franchise sales if gamepass takes off. There is no way Resident evil 1 would hit its lifetime sales numbers if gamepass existed back then.
Microsoft is a disaster. They are completely ignoring their strengths as a software company. If I was Phil spencer the division would be focused on making tools to get AAA development time down to 2-3 years. Microsoft should be competing with Unreal engine. Their entire 1st party software problem would evaporate if they said
"use our tools and all fees for using the xbox suite of tools for your games sales are waved for all game sales on xbox"
"use our tools and publish exclusively on xbox and fees for using our tools are waived and the publishing royalty gets a 50% discount"
THIS IS CHEAPER THAN SPENDING 70 BILLION DOLLARS
FIRE ALL THESE EXECTUIVES AND HIRE ME

Is there any hope that Hi-Fi Rush will still come to Switch?

Probably not Switch, but there's a chance for the successor Nintendo platform.

Microsoft calls the shots. This is not surprising and anyone cheering more consolidation is equally to blame in all of this.
