My husband loves cold weather, loves hunting and fishing, and so when he retires we plan on moving to MI. We will have to visit during the winter so he can see what it will be like.
If you like lots and lots of snow, you should check out the UP...if you just like regular snow, the rest of Michigan is beautiful and would make a great home.
We are near Seattle now so maybe a day or two of snow most years. When we were up in Canada in the winter he was wearing shorts outside in like 3 feet of snow.

Calumet is where grandpa mikkola was born and raised. My great aunt Sylvia kessala my grandma' best friend used to live there. Grandma forst mikkola lived in Hancock. 💘
Hard to believe you drove around Calumet all day and never made it to the brewery or the Italian Hall historic site. But, yea, there's lots of snow in Calumet. Or, as they say up there, "Nine months of winter and three months of bad sledding."
Shoveling roofs is a b___h. Don't ask me how I know! I started very young, so my dad gave me a short handled coal shovel. The reward afterward was jumping off the roof over and over into the snow that was almost to the roof gutters!
Some people there put up wooden walkways in the winter to go for the front door, over the snow, to the road or sidewalk. Gets to be a lot of snow to deal with .When you go there again, check out some of the little shops, and also restaurants there. :)
Slip slide up to the. Snow gage. Show America how much snow we get 😦❓ Too bad ya didn't get in those church's. Would've Liked to seen the insides ✝️😀 Looking forward to seeing the snow gage 🌡️
You have a strange gleeful tone about the churches being closed. I think it’s admirable that when the mining shut down and the population dropped 90% they repurposed some well built church buildings. I own a house in Calumet I hope to retire in. It’s a nice small UP community.
It has been two years since I shared this video, and found it confusing that you would say we sounded gleeful about closed churches, so I watched it again. I believe you have misunderstood us. Calumet is a lovely town with beautiful church buildings. We love to see old buildings, especially from the inside, if possible, which is why we went into the restore. We were not gleeful over the closure of churches. I will admit that we were almost gleeful over the sight of so much snow. While we live in the Upper Peninsula ourselves, and are used to dealing with a ton of snow, we do not get the snow that Calumet gets and found it fascinating. Thanks for watching and commenting. Best of luck to you in your retirement in Calumet. If you record your own video of the town, I would love to see it.
Thank you for reaching out. I have been crazy busy and have not had time to edit any videos. I am hoping to get to it later today so that I have a video for tomorrow.
Hello Craig! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Great suggestion, and I will say, it is not always easy coming up with titles for my videos. I struggle with that at times. That being said, maybe you missed that this video is titled, The Snowy Streets of Calumet Michigan. I did debate calling it a Visit to Calumet, but there was so much snow on the roads at that time, it seemed an appropriate title.
Very interesting. A lot of snow for sure. I've never been to Calumet but many years ago I corresponded (pen pal) with someone who lived there who was quite the eccentric character. Even though s/he was transgender, he never transitioned to a female and as far as I know he still lives in Calumet.
Why would you expect churches to be unlocked? If services aren't going on, why would you go there? Churches have lots of expensive sound equipment, etc. They also don't need people tracking in muck from their wet snow boots.
We have visited many churches during non service times and quite often they are open and will welcome people in to look around or spend time in prayer.
my great grandfather worked in the copper mines. Thanks for the tour!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the ride.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really cool
Thanks!

I grew up off and on in the U.P. , went to Highschool in Lake Linden for a bit.
Sounds like you got a good start in life.
I'm from Boston but my father & I have been to the U.P. several times for deer hunting season, absolutely love it there.

This town is mom's childhood stomping grounds in the 1930's and 1940's.
I'd love to see Calumet in the springtime. I bet those old buildings look really beautiful.
I think I should take a spring tour of the Upper Peninsula this spring, eh.
@@LifeintheUP That'd be amazing! :)
My husband and I love Calumet! We usually visit in September, but this snowy video is fantastic! If I were younger I would love to live there.
It was so fun to visit in the winter.

You found an older video. That was a fun drive, we should go again soon.
You missed the original beautiful Tiffany Canopy over the bar at Shute’s Bar.
Now I have an excuse to go back. Thank you.
👍🐼
Thank you.
retiring in 2 years and considering calumet---looks beautiful---def will need a snowmobile if i moved there though
Yes!
Snowblower, too. Have someone tell you about the doors on the 2nd floors. In case you get snowed in deep.
Loved this! You missed the Calumet Theater though, and George Gipp's memorial (Win one for the Gipper!)
Thanks. I think we will have to make the drive back to Calumet someday soon to see the things we missed.

Some of the miner's houses in the UP are on the historic register.
I think the Copper Dog sled race starts in Calumet. I would love to see it!
This is officially my first winter video of Calumet. Wow, those are some snow banks.
The snow banks were crazy big!
I've been to Calumet just as tourist many a years ago! Another beautiful town if the U.P. I so love the U.P. except for all that snow!
It is a beautiful city...the snow makes it look like a winter wonderland.
They can get 24 inches of snow overnight.
Looks like a fun place to visit but living there full-time is a different story.
I think most people feel that way...but what a beautiful area of the country, eh.
@@LifeintheUP Absolutely! It's gorgeous!

The snow keeps out most people and that's a good thing. Stay away

It takes a strong person to live in such a harsh climate.
Lol
@@LifeintheUP harsh? What is harsh about some snow? Yet, I don't care because as long as it keeps people from moving here it's a good thing.

"Wanna check it out?" Her reply: "Not really...." lmao.
To think that at one time there were nearly 30,000 people between Calumet and Laurium. It's around 2000 now.
That would explain the number of abandoned buildings we saw last year, especially on the west side of town.
Calumet almost became the state capital in 1850's when copper was king. Go down thru Laurium then down past the stamp sand mounds in the lake
My brother lives there
Do you get to visit him?

Midwest... nasal harsh tone, but no Fargo. So, not the dakotas.
So what I want to know is what was the date that day? 224.1” of snow was no doubt after Jan 1, but by what date had they reached that depth of snow?
That is a good question. Calumet got even more snow after we took that drive through that quaint little area of the UP.
Erie, PA had around 200 inches winter of 2002/03, which is about double the average for Erie. Looks like the UP gets at least this much most winters😀
Houghton, Michigan can reach 360" of snow
