    I just inked my platinum century 3776 with SF nib for the first time. I ordered it about 1.5 months ago from Goulet and I hate it. it is the scratchiest pen i think i have every used - hence why i am watching this. is it me or is it the pen?

    Hi! Thanks for your review. I'm finding myself scratching my head for the perfect nib for myself. Now, your review saves me from ordering a fine nib. I'm more inclined towards a soft fine one. But, it would be great if you do a comparison between sf and medium nib. Because some reviews are so inclined to the medium nib, that I'm looking for a proper comparison. Thanks to you.

    Interesting Review: I love my Platinum 3776 Chartres Blue - it is in a B nib (about like a western M)..This month , I bought my second, now Bourgogne, same B nib from Japan Eb.. at A$89 .00 delivered (approximately the same in C$'s)..what a bargain?

    I live that deep blue (and the deep red) colour of these pens.

    I tried a 3776 at a store recently, and loved how it wrote (and I absolutely love the little heart on the nib lol), but I'm not a fan of the feel of the pen itself. Do you know if there are similar platinums with a more substantial feel without being way more expensive than the 3776?

    Great review! I've ordered a Platinum 3776 with a soft fine nib and can't wait to get it. It will be interesting to see how it compares to my Pilot "Namiki" Falcon with SF nib.

    • @738polarbear
      @738polarbear 5 лет назад +1

      It is NOWHERE near as good or ANY where near the softness of the Namiki. Do NOT try it or you WILL spring it.

    Honestly, writing with a flex nib is challenging. I bought my first flex nib fountain pen and thought my nib wasn't working correctly until I saw videos - only apply pressure on the downstroke and not upstroke. I have a ton of regular F M and B nibs and stub nibs but never used a flex nib until now.

    I have that pen with the SF. I had to spread the tines to get the flow from about 1 to 3 on your scale. I am able to railroad it I work at it, but it's pretty good otherwise. I also found mine to be pretty toothy, too. It does work well on Rhodia, but it's not pleasant on cheap paper between the toothiness and dry flow. I have another 3776 Century with a medium nib which I much prefer for daily writing.

      I have the exact same problem, except mine writes more dryly than even your description. I'm using the Platinum blue cartridge that came with the pen. The problem could be with the ink, as Platinum has a pigmented blue that I find to be try in other pens as well.

    Thanks a bunch for this review, Kerry! I have a Platinum #3776 Century Bourgogne coming my direction with a soft-fine nib. I worried about the fine verses soft fine for quite a while and this video confirms that I made the right choice. I very much appreciate your demonstrating "how" to make this work. So, thanks!
    ps: short videos are great for pens you've already reviewed. A brief review of the differences is all that's needed (along with a link to the original full review of course.) :D

    I have the #3776 in black with the SF nib . You can tell at once because in spite of it's fineness it has a slight soft springiness to it .. Mind you be careful to NOT SPRING the nib .It has SF printed on the nib.The soft fine ,or SF, is not for getting line variation as the line is very fine ,it is for a pleasant fatigue free writing experience . As soon as one uses it one can tell .

      Would you recommend the Fine or Soft Fine for a lefty doing extended rapid everyday writing (e.g quickly writing journal notes etc)? Thanks

    Does the soft fine nib of 3776 century write better than a platinum preppy extra fine nib?? I found the platinum preppy ef nib very satisfying... but wanna have a 3776 century with soft fine nib.

    • @PensandTea

      From my experience they write pretty similar until you put a bit of pressure on the sf from the 3776. I usually smooth mine out though because platinum EF/F nibs have more feedback than I generally care for

    I'm also a big 3776 fan. The Nice Pur was my first gold nib and now I have the Lilas and the Bourgogne, all broad.

    Great review!
    I have a 3776 with a Soft Fine nib, and had to send it off for serious tuning. It was extremely dry and scratchy, essentially unusable. I was surprised given how much people rave about Platinum pens, especially the 3776. It seems very highly regarded. I haven't gotten mine back yet, but will post a review once I do.
    How would you say the Bungbox Sweet Potato Purple compares to Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses? Those Bungbox inks are so expensive, so finding less expensive inks that are close can be nice for the wallet.

    • @darensweeney5925
      @darensweeney5925 7 лет назад +1

      I've had the exact same experience. It might be the Platinum cartridge ink, which i think is a very dry pigmented ink. I'm going to check the tines and do some micromesh and see how it goes.

    This is my favorite pen and you can get the Chartres Blue Soft Fine from Amazon for ~$75 USD. I think the soft fines might just not be polished as much because mine and some friends all needed micro mesh finishing. However they are still AWESOME!

    • @738polarbear
      @738polarbear 5 лет назад

      My SF shone like a highly polished mirror . I do NOT know where you get this "finishing" as you call it from . The Platinum nibs are ALL polished before they leave the factory . I have been there and seen it .

    Check the thickness vs thinness of the metal of the two nibs. The soft-fine is much thinner. PS: The Platinum Century 3776 is my favorite pen of this level. I LOVE their Music nib. My current darling.

    As I write (early Oct 2018) the Platinum Century 3776 with soft fine nib is available on the world's richest man's Canadian site (named after a S. American river) for around CAD$90.

    I have got pretty big hand and am using Lamy Vista currently which has 129 mm body lenght compared to 3772 120mm. As I feel fine with my fine nib lamy will I feel fine with 3772 in my hand?

      I got big hands wearing XL gloves, and I'm going to buy the platinum 3776 in soft fine.
      Hope its gonna feel nice posted.

      Duvdev i bought it with SF nib and it's fine with my hands. If lamy Safari is ok then 3776 is as well. And the nib isn't that flexible. When I pressure it to much it gets very wet. Don't know if it should work that way ;p

    • @Duvdeve
      @Duvdeve 6 лет назад +1

      Oh nice, SF means soft fine right? I ordered the pen with the same nib today in red color.
      Which color did you get, and how much did it cost you if may I ask? Also do you post the pen when writing/drawing or do you leave the cap off?
      About the nib getting wet I honestly don't know, I heard some people said the soft fine is too dry for them so I guess its not cosistent as it is not check by hand before going to the market.

    • @lazry3208
      @lazry3208 6 лет назад

      I got blue color which is dark as sky at night unless under light. It cost me 80$ + taxes which i managed to avoid ;D I leave the cap off. Its a bit heavy and lenght is sufficient. Fact: the middle of balance when capped is on the golden ring

      It’s definitely has some feedback but it’s not too hard with some micro mesh to smooth it out a bit

    Do you think the Platinum 3776 in blue with soft fine on Amazon.ca for $99.00 is real? Most places sell it for over $200 CDN. Was thinking about buying it but not sure if its actually a Platinum or not.

    • @PensandTea

      +Kirk Langdon I have seen what you are referring to and did buy one once. It was real, reason being because you're buying from a Japanese reseller. They're cheap in Japan because they're not imported.

      Good! I already ordered one in SF. $80. Just couldn't justify the $220 to get it locally when it was so cheap haha :). Glad you had a good experience with it!
