Ok i'll be honest with you. 3 days ago i was searching the web to find a comparison for platinum 3776 cause i had checked your review of the pen (with that nice red ink) and i thought that broad is quite a nice european medium. And today you upload this. A ''Thank you'' is not enough. Definitely the best channel for fountain pens. Cheers brother

Very nice of the Canadian Platinum distributor. I hope they read the comments to learn just how much we appreciate their trust (well warranted, but still, ...) and generous "gift" to the community. Thank you for demonstrating so many Platinum nibs in one brief video! (I own the SF, Medium and Broad 3776's and numerous Preppies! Love 'em all and they each have their place and purpose!)

Couldn't believe my eyes..You are a life saver my friend..Decided to go with the broad one. Great job and wish you all the success in your future endeavours...

i have a ef nib in my 3776 , if you write normal yes its ef , but if you did 30 degree angle you can also write with japanese "m" western "f" style , keep in mind . its like you have got 2 nibs in only one nib , it feels 2 pen in one pen . its awesome

Excellent demonstration - thank you for dong this Stephen. They all sounded rather feedbacky (SBRE Brownizm) but as you say, the mic picks up these sounds easily so they may not all be. I lean towards the broad end of the nib so that was very interesting to see the dramatic differences. Thank you for your time and expertise!

This test should be required of all pens offering a range of nibs -- and as well done and efficient as this clip on-line. Thank you. The one question remaining on the soft fine is the springback for Copperplate styles....but that may be beyond the needs of most.

Stephen thanks for another fun and interesting comparison. The jump from medium to broad is quite pronounced, and yet from broad to coarse it seems less so.
Appreciate this and something I will have to reference when / if I ever go and purchase a Platinum pen👍👍👍👍

When you made the video of the Bourgogne colored version with soft flex nib, I was about to buy one. Especially after people at Akkerman suggested it to me. But held off because the flex nib doesn't seem like it flexes enough for me. Now I got enough flex goodness in my vintage waterman's, Geha and Steadler with flex nibs.
Seeing this really makes me want to get one again, but defenitly coarse or music nib, leaning a bit more towards coarse.

This is wonderful Dr. Brown - thank you!
I played with the exact same type of Platinum display at the Ohio Pen Show about a month ago. :-)
I own a 3776 SF, and I was wondering if its nib was working "properly" - I wanted to compare with their demo. (Turns out it was the same, so I guess that's good; it was my first gold nib, and I'd expected it to be ... well, softer. I do like it, and as a lefty I can write very small with it with no smearing, but it isn't as pleasant a writing experience as I'd hoped for that $$.)
When I tested the other pens in the 3776 display, it surprised me that (my own experience) the EF nib wrote broader than the SF. I checked it with the Platinum rep who was there, and the pens had not gotten mixed up - they were in the correct holders: the EF truly was broader than the SF. It doesn't look like you had that same experience in this video though. Pens - gotta love 'em!
The green shading ink they were using in the Ohio demo really showed off the line variation in the SF nicely; shame they didn't ship you the pens with that ink for your video!
    Thanks again! - kl

Thank you Stephen. Interesting, there does not seem to be much difference between Medium and Fine , then like you said a big jump to Broad . Also up to broad they all seemed fairly dry writers, although this was possibly down to the Platinum ink ,which in my experience is quite dry.

Thank you for another excellent review Dr. Stephen. I have a couple of fine nibbed pens, not Platinum though and have been tempted to go for a really fine pen sometime soon and thought EF was the smallest but having seen the UEF on this demo changed my mind, you can hardly see the writing and my scribble would look like a well stoned spider blind folded doing some kind of pagan dance around some fertility effegy thing, Yack, messy... The writing I mean ! 😨 Thank you for this demonstration and thank you Platinum for lending the pens. I've not actually got a platinum pen, I'll have to get one, or two.
    SBRE your ACE 😎
    Best wishes to all PenPeople.

That depends on the size of your handwriting: I would say it is definitely usable for everyday writing, but not if you have tiny handwriting

Dr, there is that "Japanese is one size smaller" thing we all know. But there is quite a jump on the B nib. Would you say the 3776 B nib is like a western B nib? Thanks!

  • @colinmartin9797
    @colinmartin9797 6 лет назад +3

Too late for me. I already own four. UEF, SF, B, and C.
The SF is my sweet spot but the uef is amazing for writing in margins of textbooks or on awful paper (it's my dedicated lab manual pen)
    I also Love my coarse.
The off can be fiddly, they are hand ground and my first one was not done correctly, it was an unusable dry architect line, but sending it back for another was effortless.

Great review, but very strange about the nib sizes. I collect these pens and have more 3776 than I should probably admit to! I've found the nib sizes VERY consistent, with much more of a jump from F to M than you have here. Also, the soft fine nibs seem to vary a ton in terms of their flexibility and wetness. Most are more or less semi flex and on the dry side, but I have one that is super wet and another that can rival a dip nib's line variation! I'm surprised they didn't include soft medium in this display. I know they're not standard nibs now, but It's one of the wetter ones and very comfortable to write with for extended periods.

Thank you for this Pilot nib comparison, Stephen. Perhaps it's me, but what is the point (sic) of an UEF nib ? Even viewed close-up to the EF, the difference has to be in micrometers (1000th's of a mm), & because (like you) I hold a preference for broader blades, my interest in the skinnier fellows in the group was somewhat less. In terms of the two top 'fat' boys - the coarse & the Music nib, the former appeared to be the truer of its nomenclature. An interesting set that (Pilot) graciously lent you - quite a range, indeed. Wishing you & Azizah a very Happy New Year !! :D

Andrew Tongue I have a Platinum 3776 in UEF, and use it with grey ink for guidelines under watercolour painting. It looks like a light pencil line, but is more legible and doesn’t smear like pencil. It works great for art purposes.

    Hi
I have the UEF and the Soft Fine
The UEF had so much feedback it was almost scratchy and not that comfortable to use
The Sailor EF is finer and smoother than the Platinum UEF
So I am a little disappointed with the UEF
The Soft Fine is a soft and springy nib but does not have any where the flex in the nib like the Pilot SF
So there is not a lot of line variation as with the Pilot SF
    Again a little disappointed
