THANKS for your honest, candid input about the sargassum issue along the Caribbean Beaches of Mexico.
    FOR WHAT IT IS WORTH:
Since 2007, I've lived on The Yucatan Peninsula & most days on the beaches. There used to be a "predictable" season for sargassum. Basically, late April through August.
By mid-September it was nonexistent. Never was it as inundating as during the past 5 years.
Now, there is no "season" for sargassum. It's now a year-round issue & becoming worse each year; since 2017. I've made a hobby of studying this subject & believe the situation will not improve until there is a concerted effort by government authorities of the entire region of the Caribbean. If not, their tourism-based economies will collapse. Presently, these authorities are "whistling in the graveyard" & employing futile efforts of minimal, manual labor to address the issue...after it arrives on the beaches. Clearly, the massive "rafts" of sargassum must be destroyed while they are still in the open sea.
During the past 3 years, tourism has dramatically declined throughout the entire Caribbean Region. This economic issue will only become worse with each passing month. The "tipping point" has been surpassed. But the government authorities pass the clean-up responsibility to the beach-front property owners; hotels, resorts, restaurants, etc. This will not continue. Because the daily expense of removing the sargassum is exorbitant.
For example: in Mexico, there are no "private" beaches. They belong to the country of Mexico & there-by maintenance of the beaches of Mexico is the responsibility of The Mexican Government. Hotels & business owners in the "beach zones" of The Riveria Maya will soon be forced to petition the governmental authorities. Year-round inundations
of sargassum is now the sad reality of Caribbean Beaches. Action must be taken.
Only the petroleum industry of Mexico generates more wealth for the country than the tourism industry of The Riveria Maya.
    WITH ALL DUE RESPECT:
In this informative video, you stated...sargassum is "basically harmless". Not true.
Sargassum is hazardous to humans, pets & wildlife. It is NOT a food source for marine life either...as many believe.
In reality, sargassum is full of Arsenic & laden with several heavy metals. As it rots & decays it produces toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. Which is dangerous to children & pregnant women.
Considering the MILLIONS of tons of this toxic material removed from all the beaches in Mexico...WHERE IS IT BEING DUMPED?!?! The same question should be asked about the entire Caribbean Region.
Because the land of the dump-sites is now unsafe & toxic. Additionally, as the millions of tons of sargassum decay, the toxins will leach into the groundwater...poisoning the drinking water. The Yucatan Peninsula has no above-ground water system. Additionally, there are no water-treatment systems in The Yucatan Peninsula. It's straight from the underground source to the pumping station to the home//the user.
These are VERY SERIOUS environmental issues facing the entire Caribbean Region in the VERY NEAR future.
    Respectfully,
    Ben

I didn't know Sargassum is full of arsenic and laden with several heavy metals and that as it rots and decays it produces toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. This is devestating!! I imagine that's not good for any human or animal not just pregnant women and children. Are people getting sick from swimming in the water?

Thank you for making this video. it is so helpful to see it. I just learned that Cancun is Delta Vacations most popular destination. What is your favorite beach to swim at in the Rivera Maya?

Glad it was helpful! I think Cozumel is really great, water is very clear and because its an island on the west side of the island the seaweed doesn't come on shore. Water is gorgeous and stunning beaches. You can catch a taxi to playa del carmen then take the ferry boat over. Another place thats nice if you want to escape from the craziness in Cancun is Isla Mujeres - beaches are great there. We did a video for both places on our channel, search Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. We have only done Cancun once - was just too busy and crazy we wanted to relax so we like playa del carmen, tulum, isla mujeres and cozumel. We recently posted the Tulum video as well I think that was last month.

@@scottsdaletravelchick Thank you so much. The last time I was in Playa Del Carmen there were no big hotels. Isla Mujeres was beautiful and only had one abandoned hotel left from the hurricane. We rode our bikes everywhere. I want to go back someday. I will check out your videos of both places. Thank you. Love your channel.

A large number of people at our hotel in June 2022 fell ill after going swimming in the water. The hotel had not cleaned it up for at least 6 days, with the over powering smell of rotting eggs hanging thick in the air. Its a lottery if your hotel will clean it up daily. Its a shame since Riviera Maya is a beautiful place. Your video captures a lot of what we experienced and we were there 3 times in 2022 all along the coast. I've just done my own short film about it here from a UK tourist perspective ruclips.net/video/0p-7rlCWbM4/видео.htmlsi=tECSoT6UqlM8rSs9

If it was oil spill, they'd already have buoy lines out to catch it. Of course, will still have to remove it. Should make good fertilizer once the salt is rinsed off.

Someone commented on my video after we posted it the chemicals in the sargassum are very harmful. They try & remove it & haul it into the jungles of Mexico. Wish there was a way to turn that into fuel 🤔

Just got back from Playa the ocean was very brown and disgusting !!! My Resort was awsome. Because of the seaweed will be my last time I ever go to playa again. Cancun beaches were gorgeous. I will stay there next time or north of there

It’s coming up when you go there to see all that seaweed. But keep in mind that happens during the summer months during the winter months when we visit Cancun area we don’t have issues with the Seaweed. Maybe plan your vacation during the winter time there.
      Thanks for watching 😊
