- My DIY groovebox. I am a beginner. Just got started this year after watching videos by Casper Electronics. Highly recommended! I followed up by researching 9v/12v single supply circuits, and after much trial and error I came up with this final product. Many thanks to the folks on the Synth DIY forums on Facebook and elsewhere for tons of advice. Also many thanks to Nicolas Collins and his book Handmade Electronic Music for lots of tips. Feel free to ask any questions, and thanks for watching!
Square/Sawtooth/Triangle waves
16-step sequencer based on a simple 40106/4040/4067 design for the oscillator
8-step sequencer based on a 40106/4040/4051 design for drums
I did install a clock input but haven't even tried it yet. I think I may have to build an external clock adapter module to make it work right due to the way I timed everything.
Sound processing circuits based on the following designs with my modifications:
--MS20 style lowpass filter with lfo modulation by Tim Escobedo
--"Little Angel" chorus by Frequency Central
--"Funky MF" multimode envelope follower filter by Frequency Central www.frequencyce...
--"Echo Bender" delay by Casper Electronics casperelectroni...
Rhythm Section comprised of variations of Andromeda Space Rockers by Eric Archer www.ericarcher....
This is bloody marvelous. I love it. What an awesome project.
This looks more useful than a lot of mainstream commercial synths!!!
This Is so inspiring! I am you about a year ago (" I did not even own a soldering iron until last year.") I get mine on Monday : )
Cool, good luck with whatever you create. Come back and share a link once you've got something going!
One of the coolest synth boxes I've seen in a while. Love the layout and graphics. Great job.
Excellent beast! I love your artwork fantastic!
I could spend hours upon hours noodling with this lovely synthesiser ;-) just reminds me of those 50's si fi film sounds. lovely job!
Freaking AWESOME control panel!!!
This thing is amazing, I give you the DIY Project of the Year award, Bravo!!
Brilliant, looks beautiful, sounds STUNNING! I’m so inspired! Thank you
....this is freaking amazing!!!! It sounds so acid and sweet!!!!
This is what Synthesizers are supposed to be. TRUELY Outstanding work.
Brilliant , and very usable design. Well executed !!!
The rythm and delay give this machine a very musical instrumentation . KUDOS !!
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Beautiful work. I'm not dying without leaving behind a synth of my own 😅
Great build Jeff love the panel design as well 👍👍
Thanks! I'm really pleased with the results. I need to open it up and make some minor repairs/adjustments, but it works nicely!
Jeff Hunt Please post more demos when you get time ;-)
Fantastic project!
Very intuitive playable DIY Synth! I like it!
Amazing project
You can be proud of that achievement. Wonderful creation. Sounds really great
👍🤖🤚
This is beyond being impressive... O____O !!! Congrats!!
Fantastic! For a beginner. Well done. Amazing!
this is killer and so excellently executed.
I love the Star Trek aesthetic! Did you freehand those letters? That is a super clean panel that you’ve made! Drum voices and all?! This IS a very impressive project! THANKS for sharing!
Dude, that Portal is AWESOME!!!
That's an interesting synth, you have built there, sir!
I love the Star Trek TNG console style decals! 5 stars!
Very Nice!!! Шикарно!!! Good Job!!! Хороший Труд!!!
Nice retro design with a slight lcars (Star Trek: Next Gen) flare.
That thing is really cool. Sounds awesome as well...
Very cool! Ray Wilson would be proud...
Oh God. I recognized the tune you were playing when you switched to square and triangle, but I don't remember where I've heard something so similar before. I LOVE IT.
Right around 4 minutes? That's starting to sound like megalovania
That thing is friggin sweet. Nice job!
That is pretty awesome. Have been working on an analog synth for years now but have not made it off the breadboard.
Brian Zimmerman Well not quite as long as yourself but mine is still on a breadboard aswell all 13 of them infact. I have zero soldering skills lol and its quite complex. Maybe ill have to drown the whole lot in epoxy ?
BRAVO excellent synth build , very nice i build too and my guest room is one bog collaboration of home made and purchased modules
Awesome work on this. Sounds great and must have been a lot of fun to get it finalized!
Nice LCARS style graphics.
Wow!! Awesome 👏🏾 love it it’s a beast in a nice way of course 👀
You are truly a genius sir. I really enjoyed watching your video I would love to own something like this... truly a work of art
That is one Gorgeous synth 😊👍
Great work. Very inspiring!
very very COOOL! thanks for the demo and link ;)
Sounds and looks fantastic!
Dude this thing rocks!
wow! that looks nice and sounds nice!
Love the LCARS theme. IDIC.
That is really nice, hard to believe you had little experience doing electronics prior to starting.
So many great sounds, nicely done (:
This is massive!
Really nice. Looks and sounds amazing! I am planning on building something very similar . You've inspired me :)
Cool!
That's really cool.
I like the LCARS (Star-Trek) interface... ;) Great home made synth! Even if it's not so "modular".
Congrats. Very nice machine.
Gotta love the Star Trek aesthetic.
clever done...nice design !
wow - amazing for a diy - one of the best I've seen on youtube! great work! Please do tutorial vids and pm me if you do!! haha
Nice project!
Can I ask how you did the sequencer? Did you adapt a DIY kit? I'm trying something like this but I am stuck trying to figure out what to do with this. Thanks man. Inspiring work!
I want whole schema for that! Thinking of doing exactly the drum machine like that!
KLASS!
Great project!
very nice work bro!
Cool! How did you make the graphics?
pretty solid machin! makes some strong sounds :D
Hi Jeff, I know this is a while back but I'm curious about how you made your sequencers. I've played around with 4017's but I curious about how you get the multiplexor to sequence? I'm assuming clock from 40106, division by 4040 to step the 4067. I don't suppose you have a schemo or a pointer to places on the web? Fantastic project by the way. I'm about two thirds of the way through my synth and would like to include a 16 step sequencer. Cheers!
This is SO cool and quite beautiful, congratulations on a job well done!
I'm on the hunt for a DIY synth kit, nothing crazy, just want to apply basic soldering techniques and hopefully make something that sounds cool. Any suggestions anyone might have on recommendations for DIY synth kits would be welcomed and appreciated. Cheers!
And you made this? Sounds better than the ones people spent huge money on. I'd like to build one too
the echo and reverb make all the difference
Wait till you hear how much a diy synth costs lmao
Yep DIY is a good way to spend 4x the amount of money compared to buying something mass produced. But it's fun and you get something unique.
@@garethwynn01 only if you go halfway there and buy kits and outsource graphics and whatnot (that barely qualifies as diy in my opinion). if you just buy the components and actually make your own pcbs it's way cheaper (as long as you don't get $15 pots and the like).
incredible
My dude! So good. Do you sell these?!
Super dope
Cool! I dig the drum machine too, is it electronic or sample based?
killer
Hey I liked your video and your synth is awesome! I'm in a similar boat trying to get into DIY, and I have a noob question: since your synth runs off a 12v supply, what is the best way to adapt 9v circuits to the 12v supply?
Andrew Stocker Hey Andrew! I did not make any changes to the 9v circuits. Everything I built and tested functioned the same or better with 12v.
@@mravandelay Oh okay cool, good to know. Thanks!
@@SleepyAMS 4xxx cmos chips should all be fine up to 15v, but always double check in the datasheet before plug-in one in !
bad ass! good job.
awesome :-)
Wow! 👍🏻
Muy buen proyecto
Hey Jeff, awesome build!! I too have just began my journey in diy synths because of Casper electronics vids. What you built is pretty much exactly what I am looking to build. Although I have just made my first 8 step sequencer so I may be a good ways away.
I will definitely use your links to do some research. Anything else you could recommend for a novice?
Cool! Make no mistake, I am a complete novice too. I guess my main points of advice are to test everything A LOT on breadboard before soldering. And run everything off of 12V even if it calls for 9V, things seem to run a lot smoother at 12V. And know that all of the effects I used are simply guitar effect circuits, there are boatloads available online. I spent so many countless hours/days/weeks digging online to find circuits I liked that were appropriate, and I tested a ton of stuff that didn't make the cut. All part of learning.
Jeff Hunt Definitly agree with you on that . Great work must be said again.
I'd gladly buy this one so you can build your next!
maaaan, this is awesome! I am new to synths, what ligic gates do u use?
sound great i like everything except the drum part hm
man that MS20 LPF never gets old, eh? :D
low parts count n sound good too
quelle machine incroyable _ bravo
dude that is sick//
Good stuff! What circuit did you use for the gate which you show around 5:45 minutes in?
Alot of respect and congrats to you for this lovely creation. I'd like to present you with a formal offer for it, hoping you'd be receptive to selling it to fund your next creation. Not sure how we can provide each other's contact info privately ??
Fantastic! How did you make the front panel?
Francesco Sirocco Thank you! I designed the panel myself, then had it produced at a local sign shop. They print a vinyl sheet and adhere it to an aluminum panel. I drilled all the holes myself, although the sign shop could have used a laser cutter. The end product looks wonderful and it is very sturdy. It was not expensive, $50.
Lower the reverb man, I want to hear your awesome machine
Nice ! ;-)
how to do make the sounds for that drum machine? is it simple? can i find samples online? can i make it with serum? i love that kick and tom. seriously the best kick and tom ive ever heard.
Glad you like it! Look up Andromeda Space Rockers. Those are the circuits I used, with a few minor modifications. You can find the schematics online. Eric Archer is the designer.
thanks so much dude!!! amazing build
@@mravandelay im trying to look this up but have no luck, link?
Kid Chemcial Enjoy! www.ericarcher.net/page/2/
So if this is all singly supply, what op amps did you use?
yooo rad...
Id love to do something like this too. Where did you get your schematics?
Are you going to give her CV control one day? Not that she really needs it :)
Btw how do you temprature control your oscillator ?
Hmm, no temperature control.
How much did this project cost if you don’t mind?
how much background in electronics do you have?
I have zero background in electronics. I just started following videos and reading a lot, then worked out this project over the course of about 5 or 6 months last year. I did a few smaller projects in the meantime to get comfortable with it. I did not even own a soldering iron until last year. There are so many resources and helpful people out there.
Jeff Hunt - that's very reassuring to hear! I'm just getting into it myself, complete beginner but was starting to think I may be out of my depth. Like you say, though, there are loads of resources.
Great job on the synth : )
How much did it cost you overall?
What power supply did u use?
Do you share circuit & software???
It would be difficult. This is a combination of many different schematics with tons of modifications. I have all of my notes scribbled out with arrows and notations, but nothing that is presentable to the general public.
Hi Jeff, thanks for the information and my respect for building such a great unique Synth!!
Make it polyphonic
I’d sooner design and build my own nuclear reactor.
If you ever wanna sell or trade let me know.
