      In the Japanese dub, he says "I've been nothing but trouble for you, haven't I?" Signifying his deep regret in what he put Genkai through all these years. YYH is one of those anime that whether you watch Dubs or Subs, the anime is still flawless.

    Toguro is the definition of S tier writing. We meet toguro before episode 20 and over the next 40 episodes we are invested in seeing him be one of the most ruthless hateable villains in storyboarding history. Then in just a 3 episode span, the conflict of the human heart revealed in his character is so relatable that it erases any ill feelings the audience developed as his story rips your heart out. And also somehow plugs it back into your chest in a changed way leaving you speechless. Hands down the best villain I've ever experienced in a story.

      He might have shown himself to be a serious, calculating, and a cold-hearted person, but in reality he was the most emotional. To become what Toguro became, you'd have to have been a person that was the opposite who faced something that made you what you were later.

      @J.D. See I can't agree with sensuous having poor exposition. While in a SLIGHT way sensual motives were cliche, what wasn't cliche was the pacing, mystery, and teists that happened during the psychological deep dive that was chapter black and sensui arcs. It kept things so fresh coming off of the token Shonen fighting tournament. Even if that had its own unique twists that defied cliches. I hear this a lot tho actually. I agree there is an exposition issue but not much of one for my tastes. I'd Def not call it poor. I actually relate to sensui more than toguro while I think toguro was till the better written and superior villain. I'm also a super fan who believes season 4 should never have happened and never liked it, so hey.

    Deep down, Toguro isn’t thankful that Kairen gave him the opportunity to become stronger. He’s thankful because his quest for revenge set him on the path to what he became and allowed him to learn the error in his ways. His immediate wish was to become an extremely powerful demon that nobody could oppose, allowing him a chance to succeed where he had failed before in protecting the ones close to him. At the same time, however, he effectively diminished the human compassion he still had within him. It simply took his lover leaving him and her death at his hand for him to realize trading compassion for physical strength was ultimately not worth it. In his final fight with Yusuke, he wanted to pass that wisdom on to him and fulfill his role as a sort of father towards him. What he ended up leaving him was one simple lesson: the measure of a man is based on how he uses power in relation to the people in his life.

    Toguro stays stubborn to keep his image of staying strong even though it kills him inside throughout each of his actions and Genkai is very compassionate and brings out the strongest emotions that people forget they have.
    They truly would have been a great couple together but Toguro’s stubborn pride and guilt made him go through with what he thought was best and Genkai not wanting to go along with such a deed tried to remind Toguro of his humanity before he meets his end. He never showed that she got through to him but he knew she was right and accepted what she told him in the end

    Toguro is the most complex anime villian in my opinion.
    1. Fear of losing what he earned:he despised the fact that all his training would be nullified because of human limitations such as aging.
    2. The proof of being vulnerable: he lost his students even though he was the strongest. The failure to protect the ones who he probably saw as his own children broke him mentally.
    3. The inability to find peace: because he chose to become a demon(the one who murdered his students in fact) he felt he deserved to suffer.
    4. The desire to be wrong: he wanted a human like Yusuke to beat him and prove the answer he had found was wrong.

    The genius of Toguro is you don’t know where the facade starts and ends. Perhaps he became a demon because he sought strength. Perhaps he became a demon to punish himself. Or both.
    Everything he does is monstrous, but underneath it all he doesn’t commit. He kills Genkai, but knew she would be wished back. He pretends to kill Kuwabara. He acts as a monster, perhaps is a monster, but underneath it all is just a man.
    And through it all he wanted the ultimate fight, but also to help Yusuke grow. Perhaps because he sees a bit of himself in Yusuke. And maybe he doesn’t want Yusuke to go through what he did. He had to be Yusuke’s teacher, his first real obstacle, to show him how the world really is, and deep down, he expected to be overcome and (IMO) wanted to be beaten all along.
    Sacrificing himself to his aspirations and also serving as the catalyst for Yusuke’s evolution. So Yusuke can be better than he ever was, both in power and in character.

      I believe him when he says Genkai is wrong about him. I don’t think Genkai is wrong either, but Taguro is honest about his feelings with becoming a demon and the killing. Long ago he made the choice to become a monster, even before he won the tournament and made his wish to become a demon.

    • @Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger
      @Your-Least-Favorite-Stranger Год назад +2

      @@MrSoopSA Agreed; when he lost his students and saw what he was up against, he chose then and there to sacrifice his humanity to atone for the lives he failed to protect. It was equal parts vengeance and atonement - once he fulfilled it though, what then? He was a demon with no further purpose - he went on atoning for what had been lost, never able to let go of the students he'd failed to protect.
      Yusuke offered a way out: a student trained by his lover, steadily going down the same path he once had - he would inevitably encounter the same struggles, only this time things would go differently. Toguro could change the path for someone still innocent: he could push him to his breaking point, force him to choose a path seeing exactly what one would bring him, and in the end his method worked. Toguro ensured Yusuke would stay on the path he himself had abandoned because he had no guidance.
      Toguro was a demon from the moment he made up his mind about joining the Dark Tournament: he knew he was going to become the villain and he was going to do a masterful job at it, but he would do it for good reason. He was a monster, a villain, a demon through and through: but he retained his humanity beneath it all. I agree he had a hard time seeing it in the end; maybe he just felt one wasnt enough to outweigh the other, much like his love wasn't enough to outweigh his guilt?

    One of the most tragic relationships in all anime, or any media tbh. Part of me wishes they could’ve worked things out, but that’s not the type of story YYH is.

    Toguro was the most interesting villain in Yuyu Hakusho to me

    • @hunnerboi8561

      Yeah, Sensui was pretty cool as well

  • @greyknight627
    @greyknight627 11 месяцев назад +3

    Toguro was by far THE pivotal villain for YYH. He wasn’t the strongest, but his writing, and characterization were top tier, beyond even Sensui. He was deep, complex, great at subverting everything, all while being a Villain you actually liked, while sometimes despising his action.

    Toguro is the most likeable villain because his intentions were to train yusuke. Not kill him. But sensui is 100% the best villain. Maybe in all of anime. Complex. 7 personalities. Reached sacred energy that genkai couldn’t even do. Heart disease. Knew he was gonna die and still made a passage to demon world and only lost because raisen saved his sons ass by taking over his body and using the mazoku power the right way.

    Toguro is one of my favorite characters after this scene. I think it's good that he didn't end up in a happy state despite being a bit redeemed. Even Koenma was able to judge that his punishment could be justly reduced for the good he did. It left a hard truth that for those with any good in their heart and self-awareness, they are also their own harshest judge. Toguro didn't feel he deserved anything but the harshest punishment for his mistakes.
    Can someone who is willing to judge themselves that harshly truly that bad? It's some food for thought at least.

    😭😭😭 This scene of Taguro and Genkai makes me cry I remember every persons path in this life saying why this life is so cruel for people Inloved, no need to go this way ihate separation it's better to live in poverty with a little pain than to lose a love once with the great heart ache, 😭😭😭😭😭 Nevertheless watching this it makes me grow Inloved and it is very beneficial, I'm crying Rigth now.

    It would be nice to see Toguro show up again in a future OAV. Maybe the writers can write a story on Limbo being breached unleashing a wave of Class A demons on both the spirit realm and the realm of the living. Then Toguro reunites with Genkai and Yusuke to help stop the threat.

    Toguro has a sad story. He was a good person until the demon killed his dear students. Enraged by hatred and greed for power, he sold his soul. At least, before he was lost forever, he remembered his once lover.

    this was probably for me the most beautiful and sad scene in the whole series 2 star crossed lovers who had one final farewell and I agree I think together they saw Yusuke as the son they never had ......only thing that would've made this perfect is if they'd kissed before he walked away
