This is such a stunning trail so far, even the cows are prettier than average! And it looks like you really lucked out with the weather. Have you had so much as a cloudy day yet? Glad to see you have your appetite back, too. (And now we are hungry for gorgeous pastries 😄)

Really enjoyed following your videos of the crossing the Massif des Vosges section of the Hexatrek. We are a couple of Australians who hiked from Wissembourg to Belfort in July 2022. We loved it and it was so nice to see those beautiful forests, castles (mostly ruins:)) and villages again. We were so impressed by the quality of the trails even when we detoured off the GR5/GR53 looking for shaded trails in the summer heat. We are looking forward to the rest of your journey, esp when you get down in to the Cevennes where we did some hiking last year and will do more next year. Bonne route!

Oooh cool!! Yes the Club Vosgien really looks after these trails. Apart from forestry works in some sections we never had to scramble over tree falls.
Would be interested to hear your thoughts on water availability in the cevennes... many rivers in the south are dry and water restrictions are in place..

HexaTrek magic a long way from the DOC and NZ Bivouac. Go Ted! Maybe it should be called HexaFeast. Anna glad to hear that you are ok, and both back on trail again. All the best from NZ

I had to watch the memorials section twice. One of my grandfathers served in the Swedish Army during WWI(didn't do anything) and my father had a couple of uncles that fought in the trenches of France. Those horror stories made my father join the USCG in WWII where he participated in 7 landings. Unfortunately, memorials are monuments to the stupidity of our leaders. I was a US soldier for 29 years. The Germans built better forts and put them on the better places but they ran out of food. In 1918 the Germans launched a big attack and it was moving forward very well. When they hit a French town, the attack stopped because the German Soldiers were looting all of the shops for food and sitting down to eat. This allowed the French and Tommies to regroup and stop the advance.
Another nice and interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Good Luck, Rick

Wow. Thank you for that comment Rick. We found the places so interesting...not in a "sightseeing" kind of way. Little do we know or understand what the people fighting on either side witnessed and experienced.

@@atalefromatrail8181 What soldiers witness provides nightmares for the rest of their lives. In 1993, a group of us were waiting at the VA hospital. One guy my age said that it had been 25 years since he came home from Khe Sahn and he wanted to know when the nightmares would end. An elderly gentleman in a wheel chair said that it had been 75 years since he came home from the trenches of France and they hadn't stopped yet. Veterans pay a very high price, even the ones that get home. Good Luck, Rick

Thanks Anna for making fantastic enjoyable educational videos.
After seeing your videos I am thinking of doing the walk next year.
What would you guess to be the cost to walk the Hexatrek?
    Thanks for your help.

Hi Alan, aww thank you. It is a lovely walk so far and the food is amazing. I think the costs are similar to the other thruhikes. You can walk it very cheap or you can splash all out and pamper yourself, stay in refuges, hotels, etc and eat out in some restaurants.
We count for about €1000 per month, but sometimes it probably is slightly more, also depending on expenses on gear, weather, health. Food and accommodation is obviously the main financial thing. Frances cost of living (e.g. food for resupply) is very cheap compared to other countries, but also here you can go all out or you can just live off couscous.
Having a zero day in town, begs the question for a cheap campground or a (slightly more expensive hotel or auberge)
Personally I think that these trails are meant to be enjoyable. It would be a shame to pass down a tarte flambée in the Alsace, or having to avoid bakery stops, thinking twice about a coffee, a cheese fondue, or a refreshing juice. The higher your budget (and the more time you have) the more comfortable you will be. :):), that's what I think.

Thanks so much Anna for the info, I had seen some promotional videos for the trail but they didn't show the beauty of the trail as yours have.
I am definitely walking the trail next year
Are there toilets at the shelters?
Rene is getting good at producing the videos
Thanks for taking me on your walk.
