On September 10, 2001, I saw John Prine live at the Van Duzer theatre on the Humboldt State Campus, and Todd Snider opened for him. World went to shit the next morning. That was the last night of innocence I suppose. For me anyway it was.
Todd Snider tripping balls is a more interesting and entertaining storyteller than most people I know are when they are totally sober and lucid. His 'church services' every Sunday have made the last 6 months more bearable. And Otis thanks for all you do to keep us entertained too. ✌to all from 🇨🇦
I remember back in the early to mid 90s Todd snider lived in Memphis for a while.I got to see him around town in small bars and clubs.Always a good show.
This is one of my favorite of things of all things. I've listened to it like 7 times. I remember where I heard it first, I was working on my fucked up sailboat, covered in fiberglass, stressed and miserable and it just cracked me. "I'm home listening to Humble Pie and making up songs".

This is so great on so many levels. Todd is a natural storyteller. I felt like I was in that car with all those people. When I listened to Todd's tribute to Jerry Jeff, I felt like I was walking with them in those honky tonks, and on the streets in the French Quarter finding that guy with this banjo doing Bojangles. His love of John shines through here as well. Thank you so much for this.

Hey Otis....I had been locked down in Melbourne Australia for the last 7 months with a jar of shrooms and other heady things....but what they say about set and setting is so true so they stayed stashed away for a bigger journey at some point. Went to my home in Sydney this past weekend and with 2 dear friends we decided it was time to trip balls, see the Van Gogh Alive, laugh and cry and rejoice that we made it mostly through 2020. Your moment with Todd just made me laugh and cry and that is what life is all about....connecting....staying together in heart and soul. And his mention of bats made me fall over.....I have this ability to draw bats, actually flying foxes to me, whenever I go out at night. It involves nothing except that they seem to like to fly towards my tall frame....maybe there is a song in there. Thanks for the time with Todd and so glad I stumbled upon this....and now I may go listen to some of your music ....as well, it has been awhile.....Peace....Stay safe and well over there.... My old hometown is NYC....but Sydney been home for sometime...and well, that was one damn good move I made...xx
Otis, thank you for your kind words. I first started listening to Todd Snider's "I think I'm an alright guy" when I still cared about mainstream music. It was on the radio. I bought and cherished the CD. Luckily for me, you tube came along, and I was able to find other musicians similar. I found you on Music Fog, because of Todd, and some link to Threadgills. My first Otis Gibbs song was "Small town Saturday night". You mentioned a podcast, I will look for it. Cant wait to see you perform near St Louis.

I saw John PRINE in 85 in TUCSON with Jerry Jeff WALKER! It was an Old Catholic Church I think! Anyways it was like a really old Building maybe 200 years old! It sat like 300 people! With no Air Conditioning! I mean It was Hot! I was sitting in the second row! JOHN PRINE LOOKED RIGHT AT ME AND SAID ( I ain't never seen anyone sweat like.

Todd is one of those rare souls who knows he is blessed to do what he loves and never seems to complain regardless of how shitty life may treat him. The anecdote about Prine and the driver...he gets it. There is no point to anger or hostility, just ride the momentary wave, making the best of it as you go. These kinds of realizations that people have on mushrooms and MDMA are the reason I'm pro-drug. This is just pure honesty and he comes out the other side of this night a better person than he was before it. The world would be a better place if more people had these deep sorts of thoughts more often and I think a lot of people can only reach those thoughts with the help of substances. Oh yeah btw Otis I finally transcribed the cassette interview I did with an about to be very famous Beck in Columbus, Ohio, April 1994, while Kurt Cobain's lifeless body lay undiscovered on the floor back in Seattle. The news was about to break. Beck was still playing dives as his song rose up the charts. Thinking about putting it on my youtube channel.
Being raised on 70s rock and reading my older brother’s Rolling Stone issues (the newsprint years), I knew drugs were big in the rock and roll thing, and I just assumed booze was the country music thing. (Oh yeah, and coke was the disco thing.) Your channel has, ahem, educated me about drugs and country musicians. Wowza. I guess musicians are musicians, period.

Oddly I recall the cup of coffee I had afterwards with my buddy almost more clearly than any of the performances. ... It was at Dunks & tasted like magic. Type of deal when they got all the right measurements or whatever. ... LoL, that's human memory for you. ... Never know what's gonna stick.

The first time I talked to Todd was after an in-store at Grimey's in Nashville - I told him I was writing songs and he said, "yeah...there's a whole street down here just for that." And I felt like a tool, probably like he did after that Guy Clark capo story, ha. I interviewed him later for a magazine piece and he was cool and funny and kind. Loved the Prine story, thanks for sharing.

Through the marvel of Spotify I've been catching up on music that fir some reason I have missed in my 5o plus years. I have only on the lady year discovered John prime and Todd Snider and the bottle rockets and reigning sound and on and on. I am loving discovering huge back catalogues of joy. I didn't even appreciate how great Warren Zevon was. A lot of this stuff isn't as well known in the UK mayb. Anyway as a result of all that I started listening to Justin Townes Earle a few months ago, through hearing that news I discovered your RUclips videos and I am really enjoying them. Really good stuff. I met Todd a few times around 2003-4 and we smoked a little weed together. I’m sure he wouldn’t remember me but for me it was a couple moments in time. He was a hoot. This brought back some good memories. Thanks.

Miss John Prine this covid disease is threatening so much of our history, elders and culture.. Awesome seeing the Prine house concert recently in Toronto amongst the few attendees lifetime hero of mine and my family Gordon Lightfoot.. A folk singer who commented said Prine would stop in Old Town in Chicago and play with everyone often.. What an intense experience to be in his kitchen w Townes thats tops.. I was privileged to go between the intense jam room in the Sheridan Court building Detroit every week to the jam kitchen and house of downriver legend Buford Jones (Foreman) in Brownstown.. he worked on all my guitars, everyones instruments he could make anything play.. I showed my guitar to the guy at Old Town guitars in Chicago once and he was like "thats one way to get it done" Buford is a legend.. roadie.. country western and deep south of Detroit outright legend.. so many people came through his jam room.. he always had a wide variety of instruments and equipment he was working on and we got to play everything.. he naturally taught everyone and between him and amazing Raymo James (guitarist for Paul Steele's band) in the Detroit jam room they taught me timing and much more!! Buford also had a construction business since a teenager and excavated most of Detroit and surrounding area.. so many stories.. He also claims to be the one whom was forced to bury Jimmy Hoffa.. No shit.. They were on a job site putting in a new pool just a minute from the restaurant where Jimmy disappeared.. Among his many standards Buford played amazingly on his own or with various amazing accompaniment depending on who was there (every day was a spontaneous party jam session....) He played Mr. Bojangles, Me and Bobby McGee, You Don't Know What Its Like, Long Haired Country Boy, Hey Good Lookin, Johnny B Goode... Life is amazing

Saw the American fork art and the worlds largest collection of the worlds smallest version of the worlds largest things. Too bad it was on a Sunday, the town was pretty vacant and everything was closed. Cool place, Lucas!
Tried to see Todd a few years back in Rochester NY. After a five-hour drive, the show was canceled. glad he has recovered and l look forward to a concert post Covid. Love all his songs but am particularly fond of The Devil You Know and his double live CD. Thanks for sharing this Otis.
I have a Guy Clark Story - In the late 80s/early 90s - i was in Nashville working with a Music Industry types and one of the people I was with was Guy's Publicist. He says "wanna go meet Guy Clark". Me and the other gentleman (I use that term very loosely) look at each other stunned and like kids in a candy store - we say "Can we?". So off we go to music row where apparently Guy is writing or some such thing. It was on the third floor of a wonderful ole' house which Music Row had many of. As we walk into this offic-esque looking room with a few desks, my publicist friend stops to talk to someone and I enter the room. At the back of the room sits the one and only Guy Clark. I'm a little awestruck but I keep it together and yet - Guy locks eyes with me, as if we've met before. He's demeanor turns a little surly, not that Guy couldn't be surly a good bit of the time. But he was looking really surly, angry even. Suddenly, he jumps up and makes a bee-line for ME! I looked behind me thinking that maybe he was upset with someone else but apparently, it was me. He starts up with "Who do you think you are?" - and "I'm sick and tired of your sh*t" - He gets a few inches from my face, gently pushes by and walks out. My publicist friend walks up and says "I thought you didn't know Guy Clark"? I totally didn't but i wished I had found out who he thought i was and why he didn't like me or whomever that person was. My angry brush with fame!

Guy Clark story... I was writing for Carnival Music back in 2004, and the company had a writer's retreat weekend at Montgomery Bell Park outside of Nashville... So we're all sitting around one of the suites in the hotel when there's a knock on the door... Guy walks in!!! Wow...so he starts to play a few songs and when he's done, he stands up and pulls out this huge joint, offering it to anybody who might like to partake. NOBODY was going to take him up on the offer!!! So I said that I'd burn it with him, and we stepped out onto the balcony. When it was about halfway gone, Guy snuffed it out and handed me the remains...which I held onto for about 3yrs, until I left town, leaving the half a joint behind, framed and hanging on the wall next to a picture of us smoking it. Damn the bad luck!!! Met John Prine at a birthday party for his"big little brother", Billy, at a bar called The Broken Spoke, also in Nashville. There were only about a half a dozen of us there, and we were blessed to have John play for us, three or four feet away from us... John was recovering from surgery on his throat it seems like...cancer maybe. Great night though....

Otis, another great video. Thanks! I love Todd. Moving through the world making music and making people smile and laugh and sing along...it's quite beautiful. Todd is one of those rare souls who knows he is blessed to do what he loves and never seems to complain regardless of how shitty life may treat him. The anecdote about Prine and the driver...he gets it. There is no point to anger or hostility, just ride the momentary wave, making the best of it as you go. These kinds of realizations that people have on mushrooms and MDMA are the reason I'm pro-drug. This is just pure honesty and he comes out the other side of this night a better person than he was before it. The world would be a better place if more people had these deep sorts of thoughts more often and I think a lot of people can only reach those thoughts with the help of substances. Oh yeah btw Otis I finally transcribed the cassette interview I did with an about to be very famous Beck in Columbus, Ohio, April 1994, while Kurt Cobain's lifeless body lay undiscovered on the floor back in Seattle. The news was about to break. Beck was still playing dives as his song rose up the charts. Thinking about putting it on my youtube channel.

I was fortunate enough to catch Mr. Snider open for Mr. Prine back in 2006. Show was in RI. ... Both sets were amazing filled with fond, yet vague memories. .... Oddly I recall the cup of coffee I had afterwards with my buddy almost more clearly than any of the performances. ... It was at Dunks & tasted like magic. Type of deal when they got all the right measurements or whatever. ... LoL, that's human memory for you. ... Never know what's gonna stick.
I'm supposed to do a gig sometime next year somewhere in Rhode island. I'm gonna look up that coffee shop and give it a try if I'm anywhere near it. That's assuming we ever get back to gigs again.

The first time I talked to Todd was after an in-store at Grimey's in Nashville - I told him I was writing songs and he said, "yeah...there's a whole street down here just for that." And I felt like a tool, probably like he did after that Guy Clark capo story, ha. I interviewed him later for a magazine piece and he was cool and funny and kind. Loved the Prine story, thanks for sharing.

Through the marvel of Spotify I've been catching up on music that fir some reason I have missed in my 5o plus years. I have only on the lady year discovered John prime and Todd Snider and the bottle rockets and reigning sound and on and on. I am loving discovering huge back catalogues of joy. I didn't even appreciate how great Warren Zevon was. A lot of this stuff isn't as well known in the UK mayb. Anyway as a result of all that I started listening to Justin Townes Earle a few months ago, through hearing that news I discovered your RUclips videos and I am really enjoying them. This one is a blast. Thanks for doing what you are doing. Tip to follow.

Really good stuff. I met Todd a few times around 2003-4 and we smoked a little weed together. I’m sure he wouldn’t remember me but for me it was a couple moments in time. He was a hoot.

No doubt great interview w amazing stories.. Nash describes the music and rock industry decline well since Woodstock also Lee Sklar in his own way describes it.. Miss John Prine this covid disease is threatening so much of our history, elders and culture.. Awesome seeing the Prine house concert recently in Toronto amongst the few attendees lifetime hero of mine and my family Gordon Lightfoot.. A folk singer who commented said Prine would stop in Old Town in Chicago and play with everyone often.. What an intense experience to be in his kitchen w Townes thats tops.. I was privileged to go between the intense jam room in the Sheridan Court building Detroit every week to the jam kitchen and house of downriver legend Buford Jones (Foreman) in Brownstown.. he worked on all my guitars, everyones instruments he could make anything play.. I showed my guitar to the guy at Old Town guitars in Chicago once and he was like "thats one way to get it done" Buford is a legend.. roadie.. country western and deep south of Detroit outright legend.. so many people came through his jam room.. he always had a wide variety of instruments and equipment he was working on and we got to play everything.. he naturally taught everyone and between him and amazing Raymo James (guitarist for Paul Steele's band) in the Detroit jam room they taught me timing and much more!! Buford also had a construction business since a teenager and excavated most of Detroit and surrounding area.. so many stories.. He also claims to be the one whom was forced to bury Jimmy Hoffa.. No shit.. They were on a job site putting in a new pool just a minute from the restaurant where Jimmy disappeared.. Among his many standards Buford played amazingly on his own or with various amazing accompaniment depending on who was there (every day was a spontaneous party jam session....) He played Mr. Bojangles, Me and Bobby McGee, You Don't Know What Its Like, Long Haired Country Boy, Hey Good Lookin, Johnny B Goode... Life is amazing

@@otisgibbs I just listened to ep 168. While driving through Kansas looking for interesting things to see, we stopped in Lucas. Saw the American fork art and the worlds largest collection of the worlds smallest version of the worlds largest things. Too bad it was on a Sunday, the town was pretty vacant and everything was closed. Cool place, Lucas!

I have a Guy Clark Story - In the late 80s/early 90s - i was in Nashville working with a Music Industry types and one of the people I was with was Guy's Publicist. He says "wanna go meet Guy Clark". Me and the other gentleman (I use that term very loosely) look at each other stunned and like kids in a candy store - we say "Can we?". So off we go to music row where apparently Guy is writing or some such thing. It was on the third floor of a wonderful ole' house which Music Row had many of. As we walk into this offic-esque looking room with a few desks, my publicist friend stops to talk to someone and I enter the room. At the back of the room sits the one and only Guy Clark. I'm a little awestruck but I keep it together and yet - Guy locks eyes with me, as if we've met before. He's demeanor turns a little surly, not that Guy couldn't be surly a good bit of the time. But he was looking really surly, angry even. Suddenly, he jumps up and makes a bee-line for ME! I looked behind me thinking that maybe he was upset with someone else but apparently, it was me. He starts up with "Who do you think you are?" - and "I'm sick and tired of your sh*t" - He gets a few inches from my face, gently pushes by and walks out. My publicist friend walks up and says "I thought you didn't know Guy Clark"?
I totally didn't but i wished I had found out who he thought i was and why he didn't like me or whomever that person was. My angry brush with fame!

Guy Clark story...
I was writing for Carnival Music back in 2004, and the company had a writer's retreat weekend at Montgomery Bell Park outside of Nashville...
So we're all sitting around one of the suites in the hotel when there's a knock on the door...
Guy walks in!!! Wow...so he starts to play a few songs and when he's done, he stands up and pulls out this huge joint, offering it to anybody who might like to partake.
NOBODY was going to take him up on the offer!!!
So I said that I'd burn it with him, and we stepped out onto the balcony.
When it was about halfway gone, Guy snuffed it out and handed me the remains...which I held onto for about 3yrs, until I left town, leaving the half a joint behind, framed and hanging on the wall next to a picture of us smoking it.
Damn the bad luck!!!
Met John Prine at a birthday party for his"big little brother", Billy, at a bar called The Broken Spoke, also in Nashville.
There were only about a half a dozen of us there, and we were blessed to have John play for us, three or four feet away from us...
John was recovering from surgery on his throat it seems like...cancer maybe.
Great night though....

I remember listening to this when it came out on Thanks for Giving a Damn. It was either that episode or Hayes Carll or Mojo Nixon that introduced me to you - all recommended and delightful. The Jessi Zazu book caught my eye. Such a sad story. Did you know her? I saw Those Darlins shortly before they had to stop playing. Maybe you could interview Nikki, see what she's up to.
