I like that you added your husband to your videos it gives us a different perspective. Dominicans have so much slang and eat the words so much u really need to get fully in the culture to get it ( my husband is Dominican) because when I speak to someone maybe from Columbia with the Spanish I learned from my husband they act like they don’t know what I am saying. Dominican Spanish is different lol

you guys are awesome! I appreciate your information. So I was just there for a extended time and i spent a week with a Dominican family and it was terrible because I could not speak spanish and every day the young kids would forget that I did not. the momma wanted to talk to me in spanish and the place where we were at all the workers spoke spanish only. I was very uncomfortable because I was the only one who could not carry a conversation. I am determined to learn before i go back to your beautiful country. Amazing place, amazing people.

My daughter is learning english, so we teach each other. I promised my mother in-law (she is now in Jersey) that we will have a conversation in spanish. Bilinguals in DR are given jobs that deal with money and a heavy traffic flow of people [ banks, airports]. I took spanish in high school, but didn't think I'd have a need to continue learning and though It's always nice to have a live - in human translator, Timekettle has a range of devices at the top of Amazon's list with prices between $119 to $350 for their W3 model with one day delivery in the U.S.. works very well on my tablet. If you live in the DR as a foreigner and want and need to actively participate in life with the Dominicans there, then the Spanish language is of essential importance. In fact, this is the case throughout Latin America, with the exception of smaller regional enclaves. But that is just my personal opinion and experience. In Brazil it is Portuguese, but even in the north of Brazil you can often get by with Spanish.

  • @REGGIE_BXNY

I think anyone who is planning to move to the DR should definitely put in a great effort to learn the Spanish language. They should at least learn the basics before arriving and continuously work to elevate their knowledge to at least the intermediate level. If you really want to enjoy the experience of living in a foreign country, learning the local language will make the experience more enjoyable.
Furthermore, Americans can be notorious when it comes to expecting foreigners to learn English in the United States but can be the laziest expats when it comes to learning a new language. I have seen Americans go other countries and expect locals on the street to speak English to them. And, these are people who have been planning to move there for a long time and yet have not learned the language enough to even have a basic conversation with someone. Thanks for the video! As always, I appreciate the advice you guys give.

Also to note I think it is kinda fun conversation meeting new people living through challenge when speaking with non bilingual without translator. Get to honestly be on even playing field helping each other through. Body language is universal tell all, effort on both sides goes a long way. You get to know what a person is like really quick…well at least if they are patient😂

Immersing yourself in the language is the fastest way to learn. While you study the language in your own at the same time. Living in DR combined with also studying Spanish in your own is the best of both worlds. Also dating will help you learn the language much faster it's the ultimate motivator besides its also a necessity that you learn the language simply as a survival skill. Besides from making communication easier for you , learning the language could save your life as well

This is a tricky one. On one had Norberis point is valid. If your moving around constantly or you have a business and more involved in the community. Knowing the language is a must. On the other hand James point is valid as well. If your not involved, just there to enjoy the food, the beach, just grocery shopping and more of a home body; limited Spanish will work for that person. I like that device. It will be a game change for two people who don’t speak the same language going on a date, or just in general. AWSOME. Great topic. 👍👍👍

If you are reclusive and live isolated from the world then it’s not necessary! Conversely, if you are outgoing and enjoy socializing with people then it’s absolutely imperative to learn the language. If Dominicans see you’re trying to learn and speak the language they are more receptive and patient with you. The bottle line if you’re a visitor on foreign soil you should make every attempt to master the language.
