Agree with you Lena that this "warning" from the Saudis is a big deal. It most certainly reflects that progress to a multi polar world is not a giant leap, but is step by step by step. Also, you tell the narrative is perfect tone. No over sell, no under sell.

I am from Saudi Arabia, and our actual foreign policy is genuinely revolving around pursuing peace via vigorous diplomacy and economic cooperations in order to help maintain stability and prosperity.
We really think international peace is pivotal to our future, full stop.
We made peace with Yemen, became lowkey friends with Iran and with Israel, and we plan to head in that direction in the foreseeable future.

No it doesn't work like that. There is no other trading system except SWIFT, which uses US $$ to trade. China and BRICS are currently testing a new financial system, mbridge, but it is not ready yet. If all the nations cashed in their US Bonds, they would be unable to import or export any goods. The entire world trade system would stop. the world would be in chaos.
But if the nations do it systematically, especially those who trade with Russia and China in their own currency, it would not trigger a world wide recession. India could be the next one, but I doubt Modi has enough courage to go against USA.

Saudi Arabia is very unpredictable, i didnt see this coming. But, Saudis have to protect their interests.
Saudi have responded which will hurt USA directly. To remove their Bonds from the US Treasury will mean the Fed will have to buy those bonds back. Mainly because no other nations (except US allies and their broke) are willing to buy US Treasuries. This action will cause the US debt to rise substantially and could trigger higher inflation on America. It could also be a trigger mimicking a "run on the bank" where other nations begin selling their US Treasuries. That is the money US uses to pay their commitments and everyday expenses. A run on the Treasury could bring about major cuts in social programs, policing and social security payments. Genius chess move by Saudi!

This is the most obvious indication that all powers, small or big, will have a say in global affairs, especially when their interests are at risk. BRICS countries which both Russia and Saudi are full members will align themselves in protecting their interests together.

I don't see this action as Saudi doing it for their own interest. I see it as a challenge to USA and exercising the power of BRICS. If US proceeds to confiscate Saudi's assets, then 50 some odd nations will move off the US$$ and proceed to cash in the Treasuries they hold. This would bankrupt USA. The only way out would be US to print more money, which will cause unbearably higher inflation within USA and any countries left using Reserve US$. It would cause a collapse in economies (Euro, Pound, Yen, etc.) in western allied countries as trading imports/exports would dry up. This is a high stakes gamble on USA's part.

After WW2 the USA (4% of global pop.) had 50% of the world's wealth. Obviously this was the "good life" and "good ol' days" many Americans are still dreaming of which started ending during the 1990s.
Before, they had lived well at the expense of 95% of the planet which was left with the other 50% of wealth/resources.
Today (US is still roughly 4% of gobal pop.) it has declined to 30% of global wealth, rapidly falling every year, and if East Asia is going to rise futher demanding more wealth and resources for their own populations which are on average poorer that Americans (and Westerners), what are US leaders going to do about it?

The Petro $$ deal is over. Once USA President called Saudi Leader a pariah you can't expect much more cooperation from Saudi. Russia, China & BRICS are developing a new trading financial system. It is being tested now. I believe Saudi did this to support not only themselves, but also BRICS. If US lashes out at Saudi, then 50 nations will not hesitate to begin cashing out their Treasury Bonds and assets from the Global North. Trade between North and South would almost stop as most nations would no longer use the US$$. This would devastate world trade and devalue the US/EU/US $$. Instead of taking 2 decades it will take 2 years...
