Colloquial English is not something that one can learn in the classroom. It is most effectively learned through informal channels (e.g. watching lots of English-language TV/movies). I do not blame Hongkongers for not knowing the colloquial English featured in this video. I was born in the 60s and attended one of the most elite primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. I got an A in both the then English "O" level (not that hard for students of my school) and "A level" (quite hard even for students of my school) exams. So the level of both my English would be considered to be in the top 1 percentile even back then. But if someone had asked me about colloquial expressions such as "nature's call" or "number one vs. number 2," I don't think I would have been able to answer them either, even though I had already read the original works of Jane Austen or the translated works of Franz Kafka by then. (Of course, I can now, because I have been living in English-speaking countries for over 3 decades, and my good secondary school English education provided me a solid foundation for the English that I used for my higher education, for work, and for my daily life now.) While the level of English - especially that among the younger generation - has definitely deteriorated a lot since the pre-1997 (or colonial) era, the inability to use colloquial English should not be seen as an indication of such deterioration.
Well I was born in the 2000s, but I believe the inherent problem of Hong Kongers having a weak foundation in English is the heavy emphasis on writting while the education system pays little to no attention to the oral speaking part of English . Speaking from a 15 years old's perspective and experience, I believe that the education system and the overall social atmosphere are to be blamed for the generally mediocre language level. Starting off with the education system, our junior form education system puts heavy emphasis on grammar (spends 9 years teaching grammar, from G1 to G9), and people only learn vocabulary for exams and soon after exams everything they have learnt and memorized seems to have been removed from their minds as if they have never learnt them before. Moreover, with regards to the education system, some schools teach all subjects except English in Chinese, which further limits a child's exposure to English. However, I believe that the social atmosphere of equating people who speaks in English to "trying to act white and privileged", which of course discourages people from learning English as they will be mocked and looked down upon by their peers. This problem is especially prevalent in regions with low income, and generally speaking a lower level of education, it's really like how im those hood schools black people will often mock their peers of the same school who takes their studies seriously as "acting white". Also, if u post a comment in English under any Hong Kong forum which happens to have one tiny little grammatical mistake, grammar nazis will start correcting you and shaming you, totally invalidating your solid point and instead only focus on that one petty mistake u have made. Again, our education system is to be blamed since even if u make a grammatical mistake in an exam that's not the English subject itself, u get marks deducted (from one mark to 0 for the whole question), which lead to people thinking that grammar is everything.

Take it easy 可解作慢慢嚟(定啲嚟,唔駛急)。
Take it slow
Nature call 住左澳洲15年都未聽過😅
不要問他們的英語有多好,而要問他們的中文有多好。 大多數人都不會說粵語,就連TVB影星,連牛肉粥都說成嘔肉粥!!
我知道歐肉膏XD
真係好為難香港人,基本上唔會喺香港有用英文實戰嘅機會,英文差都唔岀奇。
。埋單=Game over
They don't teach you how to speak Cantonese in school. How do you learn? You use it to communicate with each other. English is the same.
「急屎」美式講法係:prairie dogging 😂 (鑽地土鼠走緊出黎既意思)
2:54 死火,呢兩個仲話讀緊大學😰
讀過大學不代表萬事通,我遇過一個大學生唔知道依家既中文係乜野文體嚟㗎🤦
等陣先嗰個[你先]唔係read you first咩?
買單英文:Check please !
