I've worked a lot of jobs. Everything from cooking, to commercial concrete. I set my first choker less than a week ago, and I have a whole new respect for these guys! I love doing it, but it's definitely the hardest job I've ever done!! Big props to these guys!

Had the same thing happen to me setting chokers. I was downhill from the carriage, and I was only setting two chokers due to log size. I was in between two logs at waist level. New kid didn't clamp carriage and I was too far to hear it clamp. I asked for slack and the damn carriage started flying down the skyline. Kid yelled "Joe!!!" I looked up to realize life was about to be over. I had one choker set and the other one halfway done. I threw the first one over my head. Then faster than I have ever moved I undid the other bell on the choker and threw that over my head. I couldn't do anything about the 3rd choker above me, so I just turtled. Bell hit me in the head and ripped me down the mountain. Got the f out of logging about a month after. Could have been brutally killed about 10 different ways that day. That kind of crap happened every week...

man that's scary. Interesting thing is there are many people that share a similar story, safety factor close to zero, people not getting enough training, no oversight. bosses don't care etc. pretty wild stuff really. logging has a high turnover rate and I can think of so many instances when i was working in the woods where people were out in the brush high as could be, boss knew but turned a blind eye, made it more dangerous for everyone else. Guys left or got fired i got thrown into a job that didn't really know how to do and made some bonehead mistakes because no one really wanted to take the time to show me how it was done right. oh well that's logging right ? Have a great thanksgiving !

I am starting to Go get into Choker Setting to support my family. But I was told for some random reason that if I piss a logger off he may just kill me framing it as an accident.

Fortunately I’m a likeable guy so there was only one near death occurrence from a pissed off logger. I am as jumpy as a scalded Tom cat, so that keeps me out of reach .
