I saw these guys open for Bad Brains in 91 or 92. Chuck Mosely (formerly of Faith No More) was supposed to be singing for Bad Brains, but HR rejoined right before the show in Detroit at St. Andrew's Hall. Lucy Brown were a great opener and "COlorblind" is still one of my favorite songs.

I was lucky enough to see these guys a number of times in Jersey. They were the best band around. Gene was amazing live. I really thought that they were going to break through. I still mourn their loss.

I was hanging out with them in NY at their end. I'm glad I got to see them so many times and like all the other poster, I'm sorry thy didn't reach their full potential. I still have a T shirt in good shape and a CD.

I visited "The Awakening" in D.C. in 1988 and it was my favourite statue, so when I saw this video on Headbangers' Ball in 1991, it was an instant classic for me!! I never bought the album, but I never forgot the video or song (as evident as I'm posting in 2017).
I'm sad to learn that Gene has left this world. I hope the next world is perfectly colorblind.

I was lucky enough to see these guys at CBGBs (they played before my friends' band), came out looking like a Jazz ensemble and by the end of the set, back then anyway, it was pretty hardcore. Glad to find them again!

A hardcore kid i knew in high school turned me on to this band. Though I only heard the Megaforce LP, i couldn't stop listening to it back in 91/92. Great songwriting, musicality, and Gene Hawkins had a unique and powerful voice. Who knows how far they might've gone.
Just thought about them randomly the other day, and was really saddened to learn about the singer's passing 15 years ago.
Peace and R.I.P. to G. Hawkins from NY. So many great DC cats helped launch alot of great NY music, too.

Saw these guys more times than I can count - they were awesome. RIP, Gene. Another amazing talent gone too soon. I don't know that the band would have faded so fast...but I'm definitely a bit biased. They put on a hell of a live show, though.

Well before the Bouncing Souls were signed, they had a decent enough following at the time to get some of their friends' bands on some good bills. They were tight with Lucy Brown and put them on bills with them.

Lucy Brown was awesome and is one of my all time favorite bands. I saw the live in NJ and they kicked ass. I thought they had a chance to make it. If they could have gotten promoted the way the RHCP did at the time I thought they had chance. Shame will never know.

I still have "Five Dogs Dead" somewhere in my collection. It was also on the juke box at "The Crow Bar" on 20th and K in downtown DC. I'm told it was torn down. Shame. I think the band hung out there for a bit, or at least the drummer did. I spoke with him a couple of times there. Always wonder if they would have made it big if the singer lived. RIP.

Lead singer Gene Hawkins passing away was a HUGE blow to the group, but even were he still alive i don't think they would've ended up breaking through to the mainstream with the music industry already setting their sights on the Seattle "grunge" movement at the time (and later, the shallow bubblegum pop of Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys). No, they would've ended up going the way of Fishbone, Follow For Now, and 24/7 Spyz: a slow fade into electric purgatory...
    :-(

    Lost again
    And I don't expect you're (???)
    Try again
    You gotta keep on fighting.
    Change don't come so quick,
    gotta carry a big stick.
Don't let em' put you down,
don't let them fuck you around, yeah.
    CHORUS:
    Strength, strength,
we got to free our minds.
    We gotta make this nation,
    colorblind.
    Strength, strength,
we got to flex our minds.
    We gotta make this nation,
    colorblind.
    VERSE 2:
    They may,
    look so fine, and
    clean cut, too.
    Well, they ain't prepared.
    Compared to you.
    You've gotta
    Mind to use,
    Use it to make waves.
And nothing gonna be diffrent 'less
    we fight for change.
    VERSE:
    They talk about red,
    they talk about white,
    they talk about blue.
    But can't you understand,
    that they're just colors too?
    And we're all,
    we're all, we're all
    we're all shades of grey.
In this crazy mixed up world,
    built with hate.
    CHORUS:
