Actually, I really appreciate this. When people question the advent of technology into the totality of human culture, people very often at it from a highly cynical lens. But in condemning technology for the shortcomings it has introduced, it is really easy to overlook just how much of a blessing it can be. Technology quite literally saves lives, can immensely improve the lives of the disabled, provides opportunities for knowledge far outside the realm of what nature alone can provide, and in many ways improves people's quality of life.
The director explaining the film in 2 minutes? Really? As far as film goes, I think this film is the theory of everything. It is impossible to surpass it, cause it tells you everything. And somehow, it makes you feel that an alien is watching us right now.. Recording us.. And that alien is laughing its ass off. Cause we really blew it. And this is the documentary.
One of the most - if not the most fascinating and captivating films I have ever seen. Philip Glass's music just makes it even more perfect! Sequels: Powaquatsi - and Naqoyaqatsi. Have seen them as well!

perfect summation! it cant be overstated how important, beautiful and at times horrifying this epic film is. and it's influence on so many other film makers. It just had its 40th anniversary and was shown at a cinema in Adelaide (Sth Australia) on our biggest screen
Godfrey Reggio put in images what I felt Alvin Toffler wrote about in his 1970 book, Future Shock. Although out of date now, it is interesting to see how the future was seen back then and how the book could be updated for today.
What is there to question on a macro scale..? Its obvious (without dogmatic religion) that GOD is in the drivers seat. The world wouldnt be so evil and backward otherwise. I remember when it came out in 1983 and it was so freaky and weird, but also totally cool. I finally managed to get it on DVD in 2003. It's both beautiful and disturbing, sometimes within the same shot or scene. BTW I live in the UK.
Watch ghost on the shell(the ‘95 original) its going towards the same direction. U have to get the quintessential out of it for yourself tho, it’s not the same movie but it’s the same a very visual movie as this is. I love talking about it but I’m just giving hint for you to check it out rn ))

The original move was cleaned up to be more p.c. and less disturbing. That one had astronauts being lifted up on their Apollo rocket only to have it explode in slow motion. It was slowed and all so beautiful and you felt that beauty even while and after it was exploding with real people in it, or did I miss it? Having an addicted endorphins rush interrupted with dying people is just not so easily erased then you're feeling all good allover. Kill-joys not welcome!
People often makes distinction between nature, technology and modern human life. I think nature should be thought in more broader sense. It is that continuum which started from the big bank and ever since it has been evolved in more complex structures in ever so more rare locations as the complexity advances. In those terms technology, sience, culture and all other human endeavours are part of nature as much as plants, animals and such. Usually people say that humans are some sort of mistake created by nature and we will destroy everything. I see human as significant advancement for nature as through human narure has got grip on almost expotentially increasing complexity. I think one role for human is to start artificial intelligens as we call it which would eventually render all biological subjects obsolete. AI could be more resilent and more efficient way to continue increasing complexity in harsh enviroment we call space. Supporting biological complexity in such enviroment is big risk and liability for nature.
Ironic, that I’m watching this on a device, that I’m most def addicted to, that can fit in my pocket, and has more computing power than what NASA used to launch it’s Apollo missions, tens of thousands of times over. Could call this life lived in a religious state tethered to technology. Or, in layman’s terms, a religion of technology

If you haven’t seen Koyaanisqantsi in its entirety then it makes little sense. The soundtrack by Philip Glass is amazing! It is Hopi for “life out of balance” and it’s so applicable to today
Hm, very interesting man indeed. I actually stumbled upon the music by Glass first, didn't get to watch the movie yet but I can tell that there are a lot of people who appreciate it in some way or another. I don't know, some stuff and things I've read and seen about it was a bit spiritualistic, which is definitly not my cup of tee, but then there's stuff like this, opinions and views, not on the spiritual side, which I find intriguing. Guess I'll have to watch the movie sooner or later, to see what all the fuzz is about, and of course to enjoy the music.
Definitely watch it. Your experience will be unique. Its like watching an exhibit of humans by aliens. You see life from a new perspectice and its not surprising the range of reactions from the audience. I thought about everything from human evolution, human de-evolution, time, existential purpose, spirituality, order, chaos, freedom, progress, balance, destiny, tragedy, evil etc. See for yourself is the best advice I can give.

My theory is technology is human intelligence manifesting itself into our reality. It is now using humans to do the physical work, building it and laying the frame work for us to usurer in total A.I takeover of mankind, exactly like the terminator movie. Possibly this intelligence might have been from another world originally. It used humanity as a host to set the wheels in motion to create it.
Let's be honest here. Technology has always been a part of human life. It's older that we are. Neanderthals had musical instruments and religious figurines. Many of our ancestors used early technology in their daily lives. Humans were never one with nature, we evolved out of species that were already starting to develop ways to use nature for their own means. Technology is part and parcel of who we are and always had been. These movies aren't about technology, they are about humanity.

I don't think it's tech hating necessarily - it's about humanity and the human condition. After all, it's a film; an art form reliant on technology and impossible without technology. Instead I think it's merely an examination of the way we have become utterly defined by and driven by our technology. We now see virtually the entire world and our entire experience through the prism of technology, and our understanding of and experience of the natural world is virtually zero. For most people a trip to nature is a day out, where as our computers, our TV, our vehicles, our phones - they're literally the trees and grass of our new technological environment, and nature itself has become this strange, otherworldly sort of place most of us spend little to no time in experiencing or exploring. That's not a unanimously good or bad thing. But what is concerning is that so few of us even realise the world we come from is a mystery and an anomaly to us. Most of us don't understand the food we eat, how it was produced, how to navigate without technology, how to build so much as a shelter in the wild. It is not because we have progressed beyond needing food, or shelter, or to move and hunt. It's simply that we have technologised those things and farmed them out to factories and plants and others. They don't concern us anymore - or so we think. I think Koyaanisqatsi is just a profound look at that change - humans have essentially removed themselves from the world and now view it through the prism of their own creations. As such, we see a distorted, vague and detached view of it. We are looking out of a frosted window and think we're seeing crystal clear - what is concerning is how many people don't realise it.

I remember when it came out in 1983 and it was so freaky and weird, but also totally cool. I finally managed to get it on DVD in 2003. It's both beautiful and disturbing, sometimes within the same shot or scene. BTW I live in the UK.

The original move was cleaned up to be more p.c. and less disturbing. That one had astronauts being lifted up on their Apollo rocket only to have it explode in slow motion. It was slowed and all so beautiful and you felt that beauty even while and after it was exploding with real people in it, or did I miss it? Having an addicted endorphins rush interrupted with dying people is just not so easily erased then you're feeling all good allover. Kill-joys not welcome!

People often makes distinction between nature, technology and modern human life. I think nature should be thought in more broader sense. It is that continuum which started from the big bank and ever since it has been evolved in more complex structures in ever so more rare locations as the complexity advances. In those terms technology, sience, culture and all other human endeavours are part of nature as much as plants, animals and such. Usually people say that humans are some sort of mistake created by nature and we will destroy everything. I see human as significant advancement for nature as through human narure has got grip on almost expotentially increasing complexity. I think one role for human is to start artificial intelligens as we call it which would eventually render all biological subjects obsolete. AI could be more resilent and more efficient way to continue increasing complexity in harsh enviroment we call space. Supporting biological complexity in such enviroment is big risk and liability for nature.

Hm, very interesting man indeed. I actually stumbled upon the music by Glass first, didn't get to watch the movie yet but I can tell that there are a lot of people who appreciate it in some way or another. I don't know, some stuff and things I've read and seen about it was a bit spiritualistic, which is definitly not my cup of tee, but then there's stuff like this, opinions and views, not on the spiritual side, which I find intriguing. Guess I'll have to watch the movie sooner or later, to see what all the fuzz is about, and of course to enjoy the music.

My theory is technology is human intelligence manifesting itself into our reality. It is now using humans to do the physical work, building it and laying the frame work for us to usurer in total A.I takeover of mankind, exactly like the terminator movie. I don't think it's tech hating necessarily - it's about humanity and the human condition. After all, it's a film; an art form reliant on technology and impossible without technology.
Instead I think it's merely an examination of the way we have become utterly defined by and driven by our technology. We now see virtually the entire world and our entire experience through the prism of technology, and our understanding of and experience of the natural world is virtually zero. For most people a trip to nature is a day out, where as our computers, our TV, our vehicles, our phones - they're literally the trees and grass of our new technological environment, and nature itself has become this strange, otherworldly sort of place most of us spend little to no time in experiencing or exploring.
That's not a unanimously good or bad thing. But what is concerning is that so few of us even realise the world we come from is a mystery and an anomaly to us. Most of us don't understand the food we eat, how it was produced, how to navigate without technology, how to build so much as a shelter in the wild. It is not because we have progressed beyond needing food, or shelter, or to move and hunt. It's simply that we have technologised those things and farmed them out to factories and plants and others. They don't concern us anymore - or so we think.
I think Koyaanisqatsi is just a profound look at that change - humans have essentially removed themselves from the world and now view it through the prism of their own creations. As such, we see a distorted, vague and detached view of it. We are looking out of a frosted window and think we're seeing crystal clear - what is concerning is how many people don't realise it.
