@@ilseilse3824 That is right! A lovely, even brilliant voice and not an ounce of acting in her body or face. I saw her many times and the voice is great. Close your eyes and you even get some emotion in it. But watch and it as if she is doing a test to see if all the notes are as perfect as can be.

Yes, who actually sang one note at a time. Unlike so many today with the worst wobbles- two notes for the price of one. And yet, the audiences still cheer brovo brava! There are exceptions but this was a golden era for sure.
One of the first TV concerts I saw and was totally blown away...with the magnificence of the singing......FABULOUS!!
WHAT A TREASURE TROVE. !ALL THE ARTISTS' BRILLIANCE WERE DAZZELING! SO GRATEFUL THAT THIS GALA PERFORMANCE WERE PRESERVED FOR ETERNITY!
I truly love Placido. What an immensely talented performer.
I say performer because he is more than a brilliant singer. His contributions to opera are immense, including conductng.
The conductors and musicians contributed mightily to the enchantment of this concert.

Try to imagine a concert at this level nowadays ! Where could we find such a cast with so many great voices ?

Yes, and also it would have been impossible to get this many A-list stars onto the same stage! Today the proliferation of events, theatres,, festivals and especially tv channels is so wide that it would not have worked - this is from the era when most countries had at most three tv channels. at least one of which was state-financed. cable tv was still in its infancy.. These days, Europe alone has at least 1500 tv channels. most of them commercial - trying to produce something like this today would have led to endless bidding wars and licensing conflicts.

Thank you Walter Wellow! I remember listening to and recording this when it first aired on my old Betamax! It was so important to me then as I was still developing my interest in opera. It was my first look at several singers and composers that would later become very important in my appreciation of this art form. Gruberova's mad scene was mesmerizing. I had no idea a voice could do all that. Domingo conducting and singing the Chenier so magnificently! My biggest revelation, however, came when La Caballe walked on and ignited a love affair that continues to this day. I'm grateful that I was able to see her perform many times in San Francisco, to hear her, meet her and shake her hand.

What a magnificent concert. I wish I had been there. Gruberova is simply insane. No words to describe this version of the Lucia mad scene. I'm completely speechless.
I have been Lucky enouch to see gruberova on stage. The second she opened her mouth you knew something impossible to describe was on stage... she was huge !!! The power the colour...
I have an album with her from around this time (1980) - including a recording of her mad scene from Lucia. Picked it up in great condition at a thrift shop. ) I've seen Natalie Dessay and Anna Netrebko singing the same role on stage - both of them very good, especially Dessay. :)

An exceptional gala. I first saw it on TV in 1979 (though I think it was only excerpts) and it was repeated later on the radio, enabling me to record the most stunning performances which I have played many times - Baltsa, Gruberova, Ghiaurov, Domingo, Capuccili, but it is great to see them again and find Rysanek equally compelling. In fact only Nilsson seems to be having an off night, which she is entitled to at 60. We think we see John and Norma Major in the highly responsive audience too.

Amazing concert! American version needs introduction of singers and arias. Viennese people don't need these, We know who's singing and what they're singing. In our applause you can measure how great the interpretations were.

I find it interesting that virtually no one commented about Placido Domingo, who sang two arias and conducted. This must be in light of his controversy that is now known but was unknown or not even happening in 1979. I agree with all the other raves about the remaining performers.
The controversy was that Carreras walked out that night and that is why Domingo ended up singing 2 arias
@@Yves_Kabut I hear it once again : Domingo overrated .....he is no real great tenor, but Cecchele.....the two arias Domingo sings , it is not bad, but not on high level , strange case , he yells too much, specially in La Juive....and I like to add : in 1979 I was 18 and bought the frist LPs with Domingo ...

Thanks for Recording, i known the Most Singers in my youth and I remember very good Kollo, Jerusalem, Baltsa and Nilsson. Of course Kollo and Jerusalem was the best Wagner tenores in the past and You find nowadays no Interpreters WHO Are able to follow there. But Gruberova was Not so my Taste. It's a pleasure to participate of the past wonderful Time. Today is Juan Diego Flórez peruvian Tenor my Great favorite Singer and had sung often at the MET NY 🎵🎵🎵

I've seen an independent clip of Sherrill Milnes singing at this venue in what appears to be the same event. But there is no mention of him in your description, nor is he present in my copy. By chance do you know what I'm referring to? I'd love a lead to chase down. The Great Domingo in his Black Stallion charging up the mountain epoch of his vocal evolution. Beyond amazing. Where did Caballé's "Pace" go? There are vids on RUclips of her singing it with the same dress in the same hall from the same year.
Perhaps the concert was in two sections, and this is the first? Or perhaps they only put certain excerpts in this 2 hour video?

1979? If Domingo was born in '41 that means he was 18 or 19 in this video. I also noticed something about the orchestra. There are no women in it! Except for Mr. Domingo, most of the artists, the members of the orchestra, and members of the audience are dead or really old - like me, lol. Btw, Mr. Domingo is a gachupin.
A Gachupin is someone born in Spain but now living in Mexico.
Queste voci non esistono più, o meglio, se ci sono si distruggono nel giro di pochi anni perchè non rispettano il loro repertorio...Domingo già denuncia mi problemi vocali che lo affliggeranno nella carriera, e comunque è sempre stato un tenore con problemi nella salita agli acuti ...
