It's really enjoyable to watch an experienced operator run heavy equipment. It's amazing how precise you can get things in commercial construction with gigantic pieces of equipment, and people don't realize just exactly how difficult that is to do. I remember when I was talking to your dad about The screened topsoil he was telling me he was working in Blacksburg on a large job.

Would you rather have a grading bucket for jobs like this Dennis, or is the excavating bucket OK?
I'm thinking, of course, for the pipe laying etc. would it be easier to have smooth cutting edge?

I done a big 350 lot phase on a subdivision in Pensacola Fl about 2 years ago and after all the runs had been air tested and the manholes vacuum tested the city came out and lined all the manholes. Which was weird because they were prelined with some kind of pink sealant.

What's your opinion of someone having cattle (around 150 head) and also doing some excavation/utility work? Do you believe it's possible (and smart) to do both?
I'm 18 so my plan is to spend 10 years or so out working in wildland fire then in the off-season work running a snow plow for additional income so I can save enough to buy land either our right or the majority down which would help financially being first Generation ag.
Part of what's drawing me to excavation/utility work is I would already have a ctl on farm so I would be able to pay for it with the income it would make in excavation.
Hopefully that made sense I'm looking for advice and im not asking you to sugar coat your opinion. Thank you and have a great day

    • @DLHFarms

Why did you subtract? Your rover is set on the flow line right? You add to go deeper. i shot a hub earlier my shot was 2.45. My cut was 14.60. I put .33 of bedding under it. From the bottom of my manhole base to where my pipe was gonna rest was 9 inches which is .75. Iadded that all up got my dirt grade then subtracted. 33 and put in my sand. Can you please explain why you subtracted? We don't use a rover or gps. I just shoot set lay to the next.

    • @DLHFarms

@@DLHFarms The way I was taught years ago was once you got to the manhole measure the thickness of the bottom of the manhole and add that measurement to you shovel grade and make a mark. Line up with the stake for the front of the manhole and have the hoe man cut down till you hit that new mark on your shovel then level off that grade for whatever the size of the manhole. It keeps you from having to do the math and shoot in a hub for center of the manhole
