Two Russian Tanks Destroyed in Kursk, Near the Border with Sumy: Unusual Gathering of Vehicles

- As Russian vehicles build up on the border with Ukraine near Sumy, Ukrainian artillery and drones destroy two tanks. Unusually, they were gathered with trucks and excavators.

Tank 1 got stuck in mud, tank 2 got stuck attempting to pull it out; no dedicated tank recovery available; trucks brought wooden planks to build makeshift road under tracks
Solid assessment
Agreed. This may also indicate that Russia is running out of tank recovery vehicles.
Ukraine saved them from having to bother.
@@nicholasconder4703 or this unit is. This specific unit might run low (in nato doctrine each armoured coy has one). In russian doctrine there are less, since they usually reply more on mass and losses than quality and recovery.

Engineer here.
This was clearly a swampy area. Tank drivers and their commander didn't prepare ahead of time by reading maps of swamps. Or perhaps swamp maps were outdated USSR relics. Either way, swamps aren't traversable by heavy machinery such as tanks.
Lucky for Ukr.
Might be decoys. Because they still have their turrets.
Maybe they wanted to be in the Turret Space Force and so were set out in the fields as bait to make the Ukrainians do the work?
Thank you for the update.
The Spring Tour, got off to a bad start. Well at least the Widows got free Ice Cream.
Tanks got stuck and cannot be moved. Mud.
To be honest I think we’re looking at the fact that Russia seems to be running out of dedicated recovery vehicles . We have already seen quite a lot being destroyed and they never had that many to begin with
I think this is true. Tanks made by russia are meant to be expandable (just like their crews), so why even bother planning to recover them? Any tank prior to the T-90M turns into fist-sized chunks when it's hit, so there is literally nothing left to salvage or recover. At best, you need a couple recovery vehicles to pick up tanks that broke down during an exercise or parade (looking at you, T-14 _Atrappa_ lol). I doubt russia ever planned to use a large fleet of pioneer vehicles or recovery vehicles on the battlefield.
@@h.a.9880 Although this tank is called a T 90 it is purely an upgraded T72 .
Its original designation was T 72BVM but that didn’t sound modern enough as they already had a T80
@@h.a.9880 Nominally, Russia has 3 recovery vehicles per battalion. (1 platoon of 3 and 1 or 2 MB-LT's), so they were planning on recovering their tanks after they had advanced, probably from poorly trained tankers getting stuck.
What they didn't plan on, was needing to recover vehicles on the "front line", and that "front line" being 10's of kilometers deep thanks to drones, precision artillery, ect...
@@SgtBeltfed There's also another factor to consider:
Recovery vehicles usually are based on tank hulls, meaning that they share the same engine, transmission, suspension, sights, equipment etc. with the main battle tanks used in the same unit.
In other words: the recovery vehicles are potential parts donors for tanks. I have a hunch that the army inspectors would put a larger emphasis on asking how many tanks are in usable condition and not give much of a shit about recovery vehicles being in usable condition.
So a tank breaks down and needs a new transmission, but you got one sitting right in one of your recovery vehicles that you barely use anyway.
Doing maintenance work on recovery vehicels that aren't in use also costs money that could go to the maintenance dude's secret retirement fund as well...
One thing leads to another and you end up with a fleet of unusable recovery vehicles.
@@steveosborne2297 Yeah, the T-90 is pretty much just a juiced up, slightly modernized T-72 subvariant, but credit where it's due: With the T-90M being introduced in 2011 russia managed to catch up with NATO tank designs ca. 1965 lol.

Looks like the area in front of the first tank is filled with water (00:02) so my reading is tank 1 got stuck, tank 2 tried to pull him back out and failed.
Yep also with the fresh earth Piles.
Kharkive was a true offensive with bad logistics poor equipment and low morale as the Russian soldiers know its the meat grinder
Little is paid attention from the ignoramuses of the far left media, about the reports of Russians surrendering en masse.
I think in this free wheeling, unorganized and incompetant attack the soldiers are using this as an excuse to skedaddle over to Ukraine and "I want to Live".
Just today, russia claimed that the "operation" in Kharkiw wasn't meant to take the city, it was meant to secure a safety zone...
Kind of weird, here I thought the whole idea behind their stupid war was to take all of Ukraine, now they lead a charge towards a city that they desperately want and it's not supposed to succeed? Yeah sure. Sounds like the riff-raff from 2022, when russia claimed their withdrawal from Kyiw and northern Ukraine was a "gesture of goodwill".

First tank drove into the soft ground & became stuck (the flooded area in front).
Second tank went to recover it, pulled it back a way, then itself became stuck.
Diggers sent to drain away the water & one of them became stuck.
Keystone Kopniks...
Those tanks were bogged to the hull. You can see the huge amounts of groundwater in front of and around them. It looks like they were trying to dig them out, but not having proper recovery units is interesting. Not enough available? Using the small excavator (likely stolen from nearby) and what looks like a civilian tilt-tray, tow-truck (again likely stolen) is a desperate act.
Russia has very few tank transporters, as Soviet military doctrine was to move large numbers of tanks to jumping off points by train. This was in line with an anticipated war in Europe if the cold war turned hot. So for somewhere like this border region, the tanks have to cover a lot of ground under their own power - leading to excessive wear and tear, plus moving over unsuitable terrain.
possibly a prepared hull down position that has flooded, Russian being Russian "GO PARK IN THIS POSITION"......."bbut it's flooded", "GO NOW"!!! ...."eeermmm?!?! "yes sir"........ "eeeerrr sir were stuck" "BLYAT"!!!!!........"I SEND DIGGER"..
russia: "we wanted Ukraine to destroy these. Everything is going as planned"
Comrades, comrades, please! There is no panic!
They were probably waiting for a doordash order to be delivered to them given the remaining quality of troops and any sort of commanding officer that would be dumb/crazy enough to be near the front lines for Russia right now.

Looks like it was stuck, if you look closely to the front of the first tank, that looks like water/ pond
No recovery vehicle available.
"Cluster" is the operative word.
🇬🇧🇺🇦🇪🇺 Slava Ukraini!
Bogged for sure. As for excavators? Clue is in the water level around the tanks. Just last week I watched two tractors in the same predicament being recovered by .... an excavator. That black soil really has no bottom. If the tanks were being dug in, hull down, it would not be one behind the other. That would make no sense at all.
Are these new drones? What is the "lance" or antenna visible in the drones view?
It looks to me like a new style of detonator. It replaces the "two wire" jury rigged ones you often see with a loop of wire and a second wire through the middle of it. In this one it looks like the wire in the center is meant to bend outward and contact the outer coil.
that lanc as you call it are two electrical wires, as soon as the drone touches something they make contact, an electrical pulse goes to the ignition and half a second later it goes boom
Looks like a Charlie-Foxtrot.
Cluster f**k ?

The purpose is pretty clear to me. there is a flat bed in the field. The only thing that the flat bed could be used for is recovery and transporting of the ammunition inside of the tanks.

Why have the Russian Army adopted Wile E Coyotee as their official mascot? Like him, they never seem to learn.......
This was an incompetent tanker crew who didn’t know what they were doing and tried to MacGyver it.
They gonna open new front, this is very clear.
they will have been building a bandstand to have a parade
I wonder if these tanks were bogged down a long time ago but weren’t worth the hassle of recovering. Perhaps the loss of all the vehicles lately is making them desperate for anything and an attempt was made to recover these.
the Russians have used excavators to dig tanks out before the war in this era. you use what you have it seams.
yeah seems like digging out operation. I would think flat bed brought the diggers, mtlb maybe was with the tanks or brought some people out to help with the work last covered truck seemed to be bringing something maybe planks or something else to put on the ground could be any thing but it was backing in and people approached the rear of the truck.. from the look of it trucks and mmtlb hauled ass at the first way off strike couldn't really tell but they looked gone on the wide shots
Russia, fresh from watching Ukraine's offensive fail in part because they spread their efforts across the front, decides the next great idea is to spread their forces around the front.
Can't dig there because of the water level. This area defends itself.
I guess dig in and tanks are connected with rope and trucks also ,with combined horse powers they can escape, called troika in russia
What this is, is typically russian.... as if they know !!!
Maybe they consider the recovery vehicles too precious to risk compared to save two tanks? Besides, the whole offensive doesnt make much sense on operational or startegic level, as experts wonder. A.P Nielsen made a new video about it as well. It seems more a matter of ego and PR of individuals, as well propaganda to 'protect Belgorod'.
that photo at 3:00, is that Witch? Haven't seen her in forever if it is
Putin probably had some payments left on those tanks.
Could it be the Russian tank crews are getting smart and just driving their vehicles out to get abandoned as a way of protesting the war?
I hope so.
I don’t think this is enough activity to make any conclusions about what is going on. A handful of vehicles, with two tanks and an APC. Who knows what weird motivations orc troops have, their whole army is dysfunctional and the only reason they haven’t been pushed back to the border is Ukraine is smaller and poorer. Also, they care as little about their own people as they do about the enemy so they just ram them forward until the defenders run out of ammo. Not all of them, there are pockets of competence on the operational or tactical level but most of them are just trying to swarm.
That water obstacle looking trench makes me think that might be a training area
Could the Russians be testing Ukraine to see if their are being watched?
Lebedevka means 'little swan'.
Decoys?
Looks like avry wet patch infront of the tanks, maybe the digger were trying to fill the puddle.
Or the excavators were trying to drain the pool in front of the first tank by digging drainage ditches.
Seemed to target the flatbed first
🤣 (I just had to look it up. My late wife's maiden name was Lund and our niece is a C&W singer, so I had no resistance at all to that one! Besides that, you might be right!)
Likely probing.
Could this strange tank site be an attempt to put tanks without engines, but having guns, into a pillbox defence set up ?
Tank crew left them there to be destroyed before having to suicide in them?

this is the level of delusion Russians experience
'Walk on in' lol. These Russian tanks couldn't even get out of Russia without major FAFO.
Yes, yes… We know that your special military operation, your special tank operation shown here, and your special trolling operation, are all special success missions. Obviously they had not plan a recovery if these tanks, because when did Putin or any of the officials ever said that.
So russians… if you ever get a tank or two to Kyiv-and “win”-what are you going to do then? Installing a special pro-russian government? And who’re going to enforce their biddings on the Ukrainians and make the people behave according to your demands? Or did you think a special withdrawal operation then can begin? You do understand that a special occupation operation is always more costly and complicated than a special military operation to invade. And has to be indefinite. Or perhaps you only read special history in russian schools? And the then tripled length direct border towards NATO will have to be policed and protected.
Ask Putin about his special economic plans for holding Ukraine in his grip.
Farmer here. Tanks were definitely bogged down; it seems a very wet spot in the field. Digger are there to shovel away the mud for hard ground . They were probably in a hurry for obvious reasons and recovery vehicle was too far away.
Thank you for the update
I think they were dug in and then flooded. Thats why so many vehicles around it very likely they were not starting and were impossible to drag them out.
They are completely stuck. You can see in front of them there is literally a swimming pool of water. That land is basically a swamp right now.

If you look in front of tanks you can see a large brown skid mark on the soil. This large area is facing the same direction of the barrel on tank.
This must be marsh land causing them to get stuck. Engineers probably assessing the damage done on these stuck tanks.
So did something go wrong, or more likely these troops knew crossing that border was death!
Reason for the detour thinking we’re ok here on this side, was also a stupid idea.
Stupid going over the border and stupid going anywhere near their own border too. Ukraine looking for a ten mile buffer from Russia? 😂

Maybe they are trying to dig a tunnel to come up behind the defense lines? :D
We in the West have stupid politicians, when it is about security and fighting a war in selfdefence. Ukraine should have gotten last year:
- not 25-30 MLRS/Himars, but 150 of them
- not 20 PZH2000, but 100 of them
- not 50 or 100 Bradleys, but 500 of them
- not 2-3 Patriot systems, but 15 of them
- capable jets and helicopters in enough high quantities (as soon as the Patriots were in place)
The problems and losses of Ukraine startet, when all this was NOT delivered, and the result is absolutely clear: all it much more complicated and much more expensive now for the West.
With the right reaction Putin would already be removed from power and the world would be meanwhile a more peaceful place. BUT we have totally incapable people in highest positions, what a drama.
Overdose of stupid, methinks. My guess.
