    The reason why musicians tend to get repeat playlist placements is usually because they are signed to labels that have relationships with the curators. I feel chasing playlists is pointless, build up enough of a fan base to do good numbers without them if when they do add you it’s just a bonus

    • @andrewforbes5923
      @andrewforbes5923 Год назад +15

      I have some friends that are truly independant that get quite a lot of placements on editorial playlists. They do really big numbers already though.

      yeah. i wonder if a small independent artist has ever gotten into an editorial playlist lol. or how often it happens, which seems like once in a lifetime. pitching as a small artist seems like just a waste of time

      Ok but what does building a fanbase ACTUALLY entails?

    • @Dihmarko
      @Dihmarko Год назад +7

      Spotify will only add indie artist to smaller playlist and even then it's rare. Getting on rap caviar without a record deal is impossible.

    • @GranMahsBoy
      @GranMahsBoy Год назад +7

      I hate the power we let them have with these playlists lol it’s a fact payola is real. It is a fact labels own majority of playlists on Spotify. If you use chartmetric it will break down what labels make up what % of each playlist. So let’s focus on what we can control making good music and promoting it. If your popularity score is high enough after the first few weeks the algorithm will place you in playlists and that can lead to editorial playlists. So main focus should be getting your song to the people who WANT to hear you and won’t hit “next;skip” If your an unknown artist on a editorial playlist that’s not intended for new artists discovery they might skip, they arnt there for you. If your a new artist the market is to saturated to build a fan base putting out a song every 30 days praying to make a playlist.

    .hey guys, thank you for these videos, you share a lot of insightful content .however I always get a little confused with the idea of "if you have been playlisted officially elsewhere or if you have been featured in an article then add it to your spotify for artist pitch"
    .as an upcoming artist with a new song that is about to drop, how would I have gotten it in an article or other playlist? .i assume this advice is for upcoming artist who already have a discernable level of buzz already .for most, spotify editorial playlisting is our first stop

    Huge fan our band watches every new video 🔥🔥 #junkmadeill Could y’all do a video that explains the royalty negotiations? If labels are loosing market share because of all the independent artist would that cause Spotify to make things more difficult for independents, since the major labels are large share holders?

  • @cblanchhiphop
    @cblanchhiphop Год назад +1

    How soon before a song comes do you actually need to pitch? I hear a month ahead, but if you're releasing more regularly I'd expect a 1-2 week window is fine, since that's all you can work with - thoughts?

    the written box doesn't really matter that much its more the selected boxes that are really important , the written box its better to put what playlist its possible for you to be in, most of the editorials its the spotify algorithm that put you in there, not a real person that reads it

  • @patonne24
    @patonne24 Год назад

    I feel that pitching songs 4 weeks before to get on Editorials on Spotify is 0.001% chance. Maybe it’s the problem with that main Message when you’re sending to them . Maybe needs to be real catchy so they will stop and continue reading it (don’t know) . I know only that I’ve been learning about Instagram,Facebook,Google ads in the past 3 months and you need to publish it when you’re audience is most active

    I feel like you're either playing a religious game, or a survivalist game.
    You can read the book (in this case watch youtube lmao), and find the best ways to work into the system created for you by someone. In this case, you can make music aimed at getting playlisted.
    OR, you are making the music that you, as a human, happen to be able to make (forced or unforced). In this space, you are doing everything you can to just keep going. Also here, Spotify would only play a fraction of the role that the religious game plays.
    I don't think anyone REALLY knows if it's better to go all in on Spotify (religious), or be more of a renegade (survivalist), but clearly there are people who have found success (survival and happiness), through Spotify, and those who have done it without.
    With Spotify, you're at the will of their audience (for the most part). Thankfully, they do have a huge market share (for now). As a creator, you don't have interaction with these listeners, unless they choose to interact with you. So essentially, I can't really find more of a shot in the dark than this and TikTok. I mean, if they don't like your pfp they won't select you. lmao that's ridiculous.
    Rather, a mentality focusing on creating fans in any way possible. Play shows, go to shows, meet people, share your music because you want that one person to hear your song. You have so much more of an opportunity to connect with people and make a relationship that lasts, and you don't have to maximize your instagram strategy. I think we overlook what we sacrifice when we don't try to interact with actual people. It definitely takes time, but if you do want to make art, you kinda gotta understand that timing is one of those fundamental principles that we deal in. Shortcuts are a dice-roll
    Let's say you're a business right? You could sell your product at a store, and no one knows your product. You could send in your new fizzy water, and the store might even take it because you found some new flavor combo. But unless you're hitting media like Liquid Death, you're never gonna be in the prime fridge spot. I think we can all see Lil Nas x as one of the GOATS of social media and attention. I bet Spotify hits HIM up to set up a playlist around his songs rather than him submitting a submission form. Nas X is doing the heavy lifting, where as in most cases, I think artists are expecting Spotify to do that lifting, and aren't willing to make it really an adequate trade. Why would they put your fizzy water on the shelf when they know Liquid Death sells 10x? It's bad business.
    So if Spotify is your strategy, I think you have to be ready to compete at the level of Nas X. But truly, I think he is himself. He just goes that hard. Which is what's so beautiful about the creative world. Anyone can find success if you're willing to look for creative solutions. Don't get stuck if the Spotify game isn't working for you. It's not a bad idea to try it, but if you're working on your own, it will burn you out, and you won't even know who your fans are.
    I think we as artists need to go at our own pace. Whatever that may be, and if we happen to align with other things like Spotify that's cool. Focus on what get's you excited, and what makes you want to share your music. How do you make something you literally can't wait to text it to someone, or share online? If you're excited, people will be too because you gave it that meaning. If you aren't truly excited, people see that too. Just start making things. Once you get comfortable making things, start posting. Once you get comfortable posting, start getting more creative with how you post/plate your music (this comes pretty quickly). Then once people start engaging with you, you will know what songs they want to listen to, giving you the information that supports getting onto these playlists, and accelerating your growth. Since you know you will have people going to streaming to listen to you, it's an easy bet for Spotify to engage with you, but now you actually have power in this situation.
    For reference, I think Kenny Beats has done an exception job at this. Starting with his fabled lock-in of making beats, followed by his iconic instagram stories talking about music and the industry, and then the Cave, and then now streaming. But it took a while. So be ready for that. If you're here to be quick, then look into commercial music like Pond5 or other marketplaces.
    Anyway, I appreciate these videos, it's really helpful to gain a better understanding of what people are doing. I'm excited for the future because I think artist will start seeing that they can be creative in more ways than just their music, and they will find their music gets better too. I don't think there will ever be another artist that gets big from Spotify alone, unless Spotify wants them to. So it's time to actually be a creative.

    Have a hypothetical question that I want all of your answers on. An independent artist is really low budget. They are interested in Spotify and I know it’s really popular. Then I realize I have to pay a lot of money to get on Spotify. They can just upload the music directly to Spotify by paying $10 a month subscription. They have to pay a distributor and less they pay the more right they probably will take. Keep in mind there are distributors who don’t do that I’m just hypothetical again. Then I realize the right when they post a song on Spotify they’re not going to go viral. Sure they may luckily end up on some playlists or get a couple streams if they advertise it but now do they have money to pay for advertising. On Spotify directly or on other platforms to lead them to Spotify like Instagram TikTok or Facebook they now are thinking they shouldn’t pay a distributor in the first place. Do you think it’s better to just keep their music on free platforms like RUclips until they get a bigger fan base. Do you or disagree with this hypothetical artist. Also I am legally blind and so when it said I I meant it to say that as I’m not talking about myself. She’s a hypothetical character let’s call Joe I don’t know
