Thanks for this very informative video, this is very handy to watch if you are about to have new windows fitted so that you can scrutinise the fitters and their work when they are fitting windows that you have paid 1000's of pounds of your hard earned money out on so that they don't tuck you up
A lot of people leave the packers in which negates the idea of a 5 mm gap because in reality there is no longer a gap .I do it the way you do it .Easy enough and expansion can go about its business
Not bad, but as a Glazier of over 25 years I would always use expanding foam all round between window and brickwork, plus I would use trims on outer window too as its neater and adds an extra barrier from elements👍
Could you put expaning foam around the window first to hold it firm before putting the screws in? The reason I ask is that I've removed the old frame from an outside garage window and it didn't have a lental and so the bricks above have moved, they haven't fell but I'm thinking if I drill first it might upset them and cause a problem but if I firm the window as much as possible with foam it's less likely to happen.
Why put packers in if a 5mm expansion gap is needed, the packers will stop it expanding ? I assume the 5mm gap is actually a manufacturing tolerance to take account of any small imperfections in the masonry and to allow a of a gap to get the window square ?

What size rapier screws to use I think the packers are only to stop the overnighting of screw and pulling frame out of shape I think removing after install and seal
I've always used packers to not allow a frame to sit in water and the windows are designed for water to ingress through the frame and out of seep holes or at least that's how they used to be? Also I can't understand why packers were used around the frame? How will that allow for expansion? There is no give in them Is there?
thanks jimbo , iv been fitting windows for over 15 years , so got a rough idea of how it works , I was just making the point that somebody said that "the window should arrive glazed" which obviously it shouldn't due to weight and impracticality..
Why on earth would you remove the bricks? Brown mastic on a white window? No expanding foam so there is now a gap for draughts? And if you need masking tape to do sealants then you shouldn't be doing it "professionally" if you could say that.
In colder winter countries that wont be possible , always frame have to have space for foam to isolate whole window . In England is ok to not use it as here there is almost no winter. Plus they do windows with no vents :)
I have replaced an internal windowsill, on doing so could external light in parts, used expanding foam to fill the inside, on looking outside the underside of the outside windowsill is secure, am I able to put a bead of silicone between sill and frame to seal it on the top part of the sill?

I done uPVC Windows and Doors installation for 18 years, There can be a big difference in Window Quality and Glass quality, Make sure you get good good quality Windows as poor quality Windows can give you loads of trouble.
i would say putting a packer under the middle of the cill is a bad idea as it distorts the cill id prefer to level from under the mullion thats my 2 peneth
why qould you think using brown silicone outside is wrong on a white window ? also i definitley wouldnt be happy to seal any window without masking tape to suggest doing that is 1 LAZY 2 NOT PROFESSEIONAL 3 LEAVES SILICONE EVERYWHERE
Because white silicone dis-colours after 6 months and looks shite. Also they used masking tape, you can clearly see. i seal in brown as standard unless the customers asks for another colour.

its amazing how simple window fitting can and should be, yet time and time again im constantly finding such badly fitted frames. i blame expanding foam.
Window fitting is not as simple as this video suggests, firstly it looks to be a perfectly good upvc window being removed (why?) secondly try replacing a wood window built in when the house was built, hard putty, glass breaking etc, etc,
@@globeforever9777 yes , done it before, and doing it again next week,( different house ) and it is nowhere near as easy as these videos make out. not rocket science, but fiddly messy and a pain.
Hugh Frater - thanks for swift reply. My window installer man has put foam in, from indoors, which appears to be a thin smear. By doing it quickly it has not penetrated to the thickness of the frame/wall and there’s even gaps from what I can see - such that I can see daylight. Windows shut I can hear people talk outside. I’m thinking the old trim on the outside face (from old windows) should’ve been taken off and more foam applied. I’m not sure how you’d apply Compriband tape. Do I have to remove the window first, and if so, how on earth do you get the window back in without the C tape wanting to fold over?
Why would you need expanding foam on a 5mm gap between the frame and the brickwork ???. Expanding foam does what it says on the tin it bloody expands and it would just bow the frame over. Fixings at intervals is plenty sufficient then seal the exposed gap neatly. People just love to rant and criticise all the time for no reason. The fitting is top quality and cowboys just give a bad reputation for good honest fitters/builders etc.
Expanding foam shouldn't bow frames at all. Use foam after fitting the glazing. The foam will expand out of the edge of the frame where it meets the brickwork, so there's no pressure on the frame, it's expanding out of the frame edge, not crushing into it. It soon stops expanding and sets and stays like that forever.
Expanding foam will give it its thermal break N give it a better u valve OK silconing it up but least with the foam u got a better window frame formoney u paid for! People just lazy not using it spend all that money and realise builder cit corners 5 mm or not

I use expanding gap for expanding foam to go before the sealer and taking packers out once is set

The only manufacturer I've seen on here who specifies that the underside of the external sill is sealed. Top class.

It's because they're all useless and can't measure properly, I know, I measure my windows the right size
Goo video. I installed 2 French doors in my extension last week. I will take them down and redo them based on this video. Good job.

Brown silicone? On what planet is this installation taking place?

where is expanding foam around the frame ??? :-)
TheGines1979 it's not necessary. even though most of Europe uses it. it's not right. I'd rather use an expensive caulk.
Exactly my thought.
I've had new double glazed windows out in. The installer didn't use foam. It's so cold in my house.
Not need for cheap shit windows. No steal frame, just plastic. In few years that window will be twisted

Yeah have you ever heard of Munster Joinery. Everything comes fully glazed
do not fix up it can cause water to enter the frame above, if a fixing is needed use a fixing strap
Can you upload a video with Windows 8 installation?
No !
Nice UPVC Window Installation Guide...this is from a while ago but it's still good.

expanding foam does what is says it expands and can through the window out of square or warp it, the expansion gap is what it says expansion! cow boys
+Jay Don not it its fixed and packed correctly. And you don't have to fill the gap completely as to quote you it expands.
whatever mate you make no sense what so ever, I think your addicted to expanding foam
+Jay Don Frame should be filled around to stop wind whistle. Foam wont knock frame out of square unless the window is made of cotton wool

if the window should arrive glazed, how you going to fix the side of the window with the big pain of glass in ?
Great demonstration.
No sound foam?
Insulation at jambs and head where window unit meets wall?
So if the 5mm expansion gap is so important why do they leave packers in the gaps? Do the packers compress when the window expands? I don't get it.
8yrs later but exactly, I just left mine out In a old chalet.
Good job, but the corner bricks look horrendous at the end.
The mortar will dry & lighten to look OK.
Cill upstand should be sealed, cill ends should be sealed. Brown mastic outside is disgusting.

the morter has not gone hard yet so it will look a different couler take that from a bricklayer with 60 yrs

they skip the attachment of the hinges to the window and hanging it on the frame
they usually come already hinged

Totally lame, no air tightness, no foam, no compriband, just a lame smear of silicone to keep the winter out.
