The restaurant in the church at the beginning was called The Mission, a Mexican restaurant. It used to be good but the last couple times I went there the food was terrible. The owners blamed it on Covid, but the quality had gone way down prior to that and the service was really bad. The church was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and escaping slaves made carvings in the basement while waiting to move on. Really incredible history.
5:11 I know the guitarist on the right, Kate, she's awesome!
7:09 That's the Niagara Mohawk building. The architecture is so cool. They used to have a falcon cam, a family of red-tailed hawks built a nest on the building, but they all died a few years ago.
8:28 Kitty Hoynes is one my absolute favorite pubs. You made the mistake of not ordering the Reuben fritters (AKA Irish Cannonballs). They're sublime.
To be honest, you did downtown Syracuse justice. There really isn't anything more that's interesting in downtown that you didn't cover. If you come back to the area, visit places outside the city, tons of great restaurants, state parks, lakes, rivers, forests, apple orchards, etc. I've lived in central NY most of my life, and in Syracuse proper for over 20 years. It's a shithole in general, and people are scrambling to get out of here, myself included.

Why are you trying to get out?

@@CHayes121 High cost of living (my rent goes up around $300/month at the end of December), high taxes, crime, high food prices (generally $50 per bag of groceries), high interest rates. Most people I know are living paycheck to paycheck now, and they weren't 3 years ago.

Hello !!! You are there at 8:00 at night! What do you expect. Hello!! Your first path was from where the YWCA had been years ago and loved it when I was young!! The building was incredible!!! The building was torn down. Pitiful. Swimming and Sewing lessons! My younger sister and I would ride the bus downtown, go for a swim, stop at the library, and then wait for the bus where the Yates Hotel had a soda fountain, etc.! Great memories! You said it, more than what you may expect or know about! Just saying! And are you kidding? The very grand Hotel Syracuse, bought over by the Marriott Corp., is beautiful! I remember my mother shopping there for my father and oldest brother, beautifully tailored clothing! John F.
Zell and Sons at the Hotel Syracuse. My husband now wears my brother’s jacket from that shop! Circa 1960! Syracuse may be a surprise to you! Funny how my in-laws enjoy visiting Syracuse decades after I moved away! Perhaps the initiative regarding the highway that cut off downtown has made some progress!

The Erie Canal, City Hall, and Franklin’s Square should be part of any tour. You passed by the Landmark Theater totally refurbished, the War Memorial, an amazing historic building. And the IM Pie museum, all fabulous buildings. A good history of Syracuse is °They Built a City°.

I've been living in Syracuse for the last 14 years. There have been a lot of changes recently. With the rerouting of I81, an aquarium in Inner harbor, and a Micron chip factory coming soon, I feel like the city is going through a growth spurt.

The area they had the band set up at is Clinton Square, and the Erie Canal used to run right through it. The road the goes in between the building with the clock on it and the savings bank which is to the left is the original path of the canal. Where the beer tents are set up was also in the path.

Yes, you definitely need to spend more time here to get a more accurate feel for the Salt City. If you do, Tipperary Hill, Dinosaur Barbecue, State Fair grounds, Onondaga Lake plus many other interesting locations/sections along with the burbs.

All the industry left the city decades ago. All that’s left is empty buildings with a bar/restaurant storefront or over priced apartments intended for the spoiled university students from Long Island

The downtown area and the university are not the true indication of the real Syracuse, NY. Both have a big police presence that the neighborhoods do not. Downtown has City Hall, various police stations and a jail. Syracuse University has a huge police presence as well as their own security force. The neighborhoods have nothing and are riddled with crime and drugs.

This is certainly true with most of these Upper State New York cities, something we look to explore further this summer.

That’s not a festival. Every Wednesday in the summer that goes on. Used to be called Party in the Plaza and may still be called that, not sure.
