    If you are critical of this music, you're either a grumpy old timer (who ain't got much time left anyway) or you're not really from Appalachia. My family has been in the region for over 200+ years, and this music makes me dance--just as much as the old time stuff.
    Hateful, ugly people all over; need to take their city slicker selves and attitudes elsewhere, if they don't like this music.
    Keep making and playing that sweet, beautiful music! Keep the traditions alive, by mixing up a little bit.

    The Banjo is an African instrument? Since when? it was created by Europeans in the 18th century. Oh sure...it bears some rudimentary similarities with primitive African string instruments made with bamboo...and a million their string instruments across space and time. So what?
    And wtf does the origin of Banjos have to do with drummers in Appalachian music? Last I heard it never used drums. This group is as genuinely Appalachian as MCcDonalds.
    And nice ad homeined against laylow4now btw.

    True! I took a Music of World Cultures class in college and I learned that Appalachian music has Scot/Irish melodies mixed with banjo and fiddle rhythmic influences from Africa... Music is dynamic and is influenced (especially American music), by many aspects. Our musical roots were not formed in a vacuum.

  • @lawdayl

    Music evolves or it stagnates, this group are making these old songs their own and sharing instead of just copying them like many others. They say they have an affinity with the Appalachian mountains and a love of the music, that's how I hear it anyway. You don't have to be born there to appreciate the music or be moved by the culture. If everyone painted a landscape in the same drab colours how boring the world would be. I like their music.

    • @lawdayl
      @lawdayl 8 лет назад +1

      +David G I agree and for most of us this is the case. The point i was trying to make is that when a group such as this put a different perspective on an old favourite it's like adding cream to hot apple pie. I live in Australia and am influenced by music from the Appalachian mountains just as early settlers in those mountains were influenced by music from Europe but played that music in their own style. it's called progress and is the reason why we have different genres and styles in music.

    (2)African instrument in the first place was because laylow4now made a negative remark concerning the drummer in this band; he implied it couldn't be Appalachian music because there's an African guy playing drums(!), and it felt as though he was personally attacking the musician for being black. Well, you can't knock an African taking part in Appalachian music, because African Americans MAJORLY influenced the development of that style of music. (I took a class on this stuff and wrote a......

    Wow, some of those comments are way out there. It's sad that people are so insecure and close-minded that they can't even enjoy music, and genuine people (sisters BTW, not lesbians) who are dedicated to helping others and creating art. And it's funny GeorgeBonez, when I lived in "the south" I hung out with locals who grew their own and had a still in the back too. They were also stuck in poverty and exploited by big money interests. Rising Appalachia rocks. Love them. And I'm going to see them tonight in Northampton Ma !

    The Cumberland Gap is the source of the original violation's of the Royal Proclamation of 1763 that clearly stated that no settler was to enter the Kentucky "Reservation" land's. Now, in 2013, the old decree has been violated again by Ottawa! (Resource grab from tribal turf)! Hence the birth of Idle No More!

    You really should do some research before you judge and criticize. You clearly do not understand what this group is about. They started out doing covers of Appalachian tunes, and eventually broadened their horizons. They tried to change the name of their group, temporarily becoming "R.I.S.E.", but a name-change didn't work out for them, so they remained "Rising Appalachia." They never claimed to be dedicated to Appalachian culture, strictly; they have a bigger picture than that. Educate yourself

  • @likesunflowers
    @likesunflowers 11 лет назад

    ps. I don't think I made myself clear about why i referenced the banjo. The banjo is thought of strictly as an Appalachian/old-time/blue-grass instrument, and for some reason is thought to be only used by white people. I was just saying that the instrument which seems to define Appalachian music in fact has its origins in Africa and the African American slaves of the south which brought the instrument and sound to Appalachia. Make sense?

  • @likesunflowers
    @likesunflowers 11 лет назад

    (1)The banjo as it currently is today is of course not EXACTLY what Africans brought to this country; however, the parent of the banjo is absolutely of African origin. It changed and evolved largely due to the resources available in this new land differing from those available in Africa. It was most definitely not created by Europeans. If anything, it was introduced to Europeans in the 19th century, but they did not create it. And the only reason I made a comment about the banjo being an......

    I'd love to have supper with them at (Sue) Webb's Kitchen, especially on open mike night. Or we could climb beyond the Iron Furnace and harmonize together in the 'accoustic room' inside of Cujo's Cave. That's right, Cujo's Cave (pre-LMU era). Fiddles and claw-hammer banjos are most welcome atop the Pinnacle. Hope you know what I'm talking about. "Holler" at me and I won't be a'fussin'. I'll be fishin' right yonder. :)

  • @likesunflowers
    @likesunflowers 12 лет назад

    What is wrong with you? Do your homework before you start criticizing. These girls have Appalachian roots whether you like it or not. They're not polluting Appalachian culture; they're spreading old-time music to new audiences, which is a noble cause. Secondly, concerning your "African" drummer comment, traditional Appalachian music would not be what it is without African American influence. The banjo is an African instrument. What darkness in your heart makes you so negative and judgmental?

  • @likesunflowers
    @likesunflowers 11 лет назад

    (4)...Just because they are not doing Appalachian songs in the most traditional style, doesn't mean they aren't doing a great job at presenting a VERSION of appalachian music. BTW, i have no idea what "nice ad homeined against laylow4now" means. lol I don't know if you are sarcastically insulting me or actually paying me a compliment.

    (3)...pretty serious research paper; I know what I'm talking about.) And as for them being as genuinely appalachian as McDonalds, I don't think they are claiming to be purely Appalachian. They even tried to change the name of their band to encompass the scope of what they are about, but they were already too well known by this name. They do, however, have roots in Appalachia, growing up in the area and being instilled with a love for the music and culture......

    Leah and Chloe are sisters - born in the Appalachia, thus their band name. Their parents taught them music and they travel around the WORLD gathering and sharing others songs (especially songs from females) so they won't be lost. Their home base is New Orleans at this time. One should do research on people before "assuming" and making nasty remarks about anyone. I have had the PLEASURE of seeing them perform and I will never forget it. They play with musicians from all OVER the world.

I know that brings actual pain to both of your miserable lives, but no one cares. These girls grew up in Little 5 Point, minutes from the terminus of the AT. I can tell from their music that Appalachia is indeed part of their makeup. Different doesnt equate to bad or wrong except in your simple existence.
