And what's worse: some experts think exposure to blue green algae can increase the risk of ALS, so this should definitely be taken very seriously! Thanks for a good video!
Hi Rachel, thanks for this video. It may be worth mentioning that blue-green algae may be present, though invisible to the naked eye, for two weeks after it's disappeared from the surface. I can't remember the source but it did come up in the local FB swimming group I belong to. Cheers, Rebekka x
Great point. I looked at quite a few websites for the research but couldn’t come up with a definitive about when it clears up. Thanks for them a point in the right direction 🏊♀️😀
Well Rachel, it’s been quite the hot and dry summer here in the PNW (🇨🇦). Most of the media attention is on the wildfires and the devastating damage to our forests, BUT according to preliminary data, more than 1 billion sea creatures were cooked to death during the record-breaking heat wave along the coastline. Such a marine massacre, it will take years for our ocean organisms and wildlife to recover. I live in the north where fortunately it’s been somewhat cooler and even raining throughout the past month, so we don’t have the algae problems that exist in the south. That said, my local lakes are warmer on the surface this summer than they have ever been. (This makes for comfortable swimming, but it’s also very concerning!! What doesn’t heat up when temperatures are approaching 50 degrees??) I will keep my eyes peeled for colourful floaty stuff on the surface, but so far all I’m seeing on the surface are the usual lily pads near the shore. Great video and helpful info as always. Thanks for this one Rachel, enjoy the August waters 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary
Thanks Mary, I’m pleased you’ve come out of the worst of the heat. What a terrible situation for the sea creatures destroyed by the heat. Keep your eyes peeled for blue green algae, but in the meantime enjoy the water 🏊♀️😀
This is super useful. Thank you very much. I'm admin on a outdoor swim group of just over 1,000 people. I will share this with them. Thanks again. x
Thanks for watching and sharing Liz, enjoy the water 🏊♀️😀
Great stuff!! Thank you Rachel and comments noted all

I’ve never heard that, how interesting.
Thank you Rachel, that's very helpful, especially for dog owners
Gotta keep our fur babies safe!

Thank you for this - I am better informed now on this!
Great. Hopefully the blue green algae threat is passing for this year (in the Northern Hemisphere).
Very useful post and I absolutely love your dog.
She's a cheeky little thing with a penchant for snogging anyone's ears that she can get to!
Thanks for the information!
No problem, thanks for watching 🏊♀️😀
Really useful. Thanks!
Thanks for watching
Hai Rach, is blue green algae also in lakes in the winter when temperaturen go down? Or do temperaturen not matter to them...?
Hi Mi, no the algae doesn't bloom unless the conditions are right in summer. Too cold in the winter and probably too rainy too.
