Consider a bat that is infected with several deadly viruses, including ones that cause rabies, SARS, and Ebola. While this diagnosis would be lethal for other mammals, the winged wonder is totally unfazed, and may even spend the next 30 years living as if this were totally normal- because for bats, it is. So what’s protecting bats from these dangerous infections? Arinjay Banerjee investigates.

While this is really interesting, it didn't explain why this leads to bats being fine. Why wouldn't the virus just immediately proliferate and consume the bat if there's no immune response? It's not like they're intelligent and know they need to keep the host alive. They just multiply.
@@mobilemarshall In the video, they talk say that the bacteria try to make the organism destroy itself. However, bats can stop this by "smarter" immune systems. Therefore, stopping the bacteria from killing them.

- Provide homes for bats (Bat houses specifically approved by Merlin Tuttle)
- Do not enter caves in general or do not go into restricted caves
- If a cave is public, clean your gear before and after entering, as human interference not only disrupts their hibernation but also can track White nose syndrome into the colonies.
- Educate others!
WNS is very different than much of what is described in this video. it is a cold loving fungus that disrupts bats in hibernation. If their sleep is disrupted frequently they can die from starvation/energy depletion.

More accurately, bats and viruses have always been fighting, they just fought so much that a sort of temporary "truce" has emerged.

@@ranwilder2181 I thought it was already official bats were not the cause of *this recent event*, there was literally a laboratory under the market testing some virus modifications to study those virus... The study backfired basically.
@@el2746 it was gain of function research, the virus came from bats... my guess is that a janitor saw them throwing out bats (not knowing what they was actually doing in that lab) and decided to make a few extra bucks by selling the bats from the lab to the market right around the corner...

@@dunhillsupramk3 there is no proof to the gain of function research. The viruses that you spoke about do not have the ability to transmit to people. The Covid that we get has already had the ability to transmit to people. So, no gain in function. It doesn't mean that Covid could not be from the lab. Labs are known to play with multiple genetic modification with viruses for study.
