25 years ago I went to see a band called FM. They were being supported by a band that I knew nothing about, only that they had an album out called Drivin' Wheel. That band was Drive, She Said and as I walked home at the end of the gig, the song that was in my head was Hard Way Home. Great songs, great musicianship and a great, great voice. Years later I felt it was about time I replaced my D,SS cassettes and vinyl with the CD versions. I bought them directly from Indigo records website, and when they arrived here in the UK, there was Mark Mangold's solo album in there too. That's great customer service from a record company, except......... Mark's signature was on the postal slip! He'd packed that envelope and posted it to me himself! Until the day those CDs crumble to dust (and I already have back-ups), Drive, She Said will live on. Always and Forever, as they once said. God speed, Al. You were truly, truly brilliant and you put a smile on my face more times than I could possibly count.
Wow...a nice comment. Just looking for a movie to watch and this showed up. Much thanks for the kind words and memories of the dude of dudes...sorely missed.
Mine came from a mixture of places. For Pedal To The Metal (which has this monster of a song), I bought it from the Frontiers website. The remixed version of Real Life came from the Escape Music website (which still says "coming soon" on the front page, but it will let you order it through the shop page) Dreams Will Come I had to get from eBay because I couldn't find it available anywhere else. When I replaced my cassette and vinyl versions with CDs of the first three albums (DSS, Drivin' Wheel, Exelerator), I bought them direct from Mark Mangold's website (Google "mark mangold indigo records" to find it) but it doesn't look like the DSS page has been updated since 2003. Mark is contactable through Facebook, so you could try asking him where the best place to buy them is.
I would love to see a video of the concert where I first heard them, even if it was just a single camera angle in poor quality. I was stood right at the front on the left hand side, with Ray DeTone right in front me, and then Al in the middle. I couldn't really see Mark from where I was stood, but as a guitarist myself I was captivated by Ray's playing (and him swinging the guitar around his neck, knocking the mic stand over), and then when Al picked up his guitar too, I was in heaven. At one point, they were playing a solo in unison with each other, but Ray was picking and Al was tapping, which I've never seen anyone else do. I wish I could remember which song it was on, because this solo isn't on the album. Amazing to think that almost 30 years later, DSS are still one of my favourite bands.
Had a great time playing drums with the band in Milan! RIP Al.
Fantástic guitar Solo!!!

He was so talented. Amazing.
Pretty much any time I'm in the car by myself, this song gets played loud with me failing to sing along to it.
