I've just put this set on my strat a week ago and I am super happy with the tone, they are shiny sounding, They stayed in tune after only one day!, I really loved them
Everyone here decided to learn Floyd as a lockdown hobby. We all have bleeding fingers and want to know if it's easier to bend the B up through 5 semi tones compared to regular 10s before we buy the legit strings from GHS because the guy who does it is on the box and at some level we all want to think it's the strings and not our lack of ability that is failing us......
Tried a set of Signatures, nickel wounds, Custom Balanced .010, .013, .017, .026w, .016, .048 on my 335. The customized set that I was using wasn't getting it. But as soon as these Signature Balanced set was installed...335 became quite literally a different guitar. Can't put it down! Definitely has risen in the guitarsenal! Feel and sustain is perfect for me.👍😎 Thanks for a great product. Glad you were found!
Scott, I always appreciate all your topics and videos. In this one you really show a high level of respect to all of us viewers. You never come across as a know it all guy even though you probably just about “know it all” where strings etc are concerned ha ha. Keep them coming much appreciated
I’m using balanced 9s now, but I can totally see the value of using that set but with a 10 for the E... like you said, would give a little more oomph to the E, but would also help avoid string roll, especially on a bound neck where that can be a bit easier to do (at least for me)... I live on the neck pickup 90% of the time, so thicker low strings can get overly bassy for me especially since I drench everything in reverb
Yeah, I've bought the DG GHS sets in the past. The gauges definitely made sense for the way he plays a Strat if you think about it. He's known for huuuuge bends so there's your lighter G&B, and since he does plenty of chunky rhythym work when he's not soloing, the heavier bottom 3 drive the amp harder for more natural breakup with a nice rounder sound. Personally I got used to 9's as a teenager so that's always been my comfort zone. Even 10's seem too heavy to me and the one or two times I tried 11's they were basically unplayable. My favorite sets are anything pure nickel, like the GHS Burnished rockers and Thomastik makes a nice set called Sliders, when I'm feeling luxurious.
I really liked the video and appreciate the information. As well as all of the interesting comments here. I just slap a set of whatever I’ve got in my studio on any of my guitars and write music. It’s perhaps overly simplified but than again I’m not Gilmour and never will be.
Great question! Ultimately we've found that string gauges depend much more on the individual player than the guitar or genre. Let's say for example you play blues on a strat-well many players player 9s or even 8s, others go as high as 13s, all for the same genre/instrument. That said, if I were to shoot totally in the dark and go solely based off of your instrument I'd recommend something like .011s as a starting place-but .0105s or .0115s or even .012s might be a better choice depending on your individual tastes and needs.
You should follow up on the Tony Iommi video. His choice of string gauges has a very interesting backstory and it helped play a part in the invention of a genre as well as popularizing lower tunings.
For Jimi Hendrix fans that play reversed slanted bridge pickup, Jimi used (if not mistaken) .010, .013, .019, .026w, .032, .038. If anyone remembers differently please enlighten?👍😎 Cool vid👍😎
@@justinpurser4736 You are correct. Don't know why I did that? The reverse stringing along with the reversed pup led to this choice according to article read.
How about the Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child set that goes .010, .013, .015, .026, .032 and .038. That's like starting with 10's and ending with 8's Fender stopped making that set for a while but brought it back. I used to use it when I first started playing and was thinking of getting a set to try again.
I frankensteined a David Gilmour set on a Tele using the top strings of Primo Slinky's and bottom strings of Power Slinky's. 9.5-12-16-28-38-48. It's cool, and the bottom strings sound deeper for clean tones, but I didn't really feel that much of a difference from a set of 10's.
I read an interview twenty or thirty years ago where he talked about how he does most of his higher soloing on the G and B strings. The E always sounded to thin for him. He liked the fuller sound on the lower strings, that explains, also, his fascination with the others being a little fuller as well. Thinner strings are easier to play, and you can account for thinner sound with equipment or settings, however, when the meat of the finger has just a little more surface contact with the steel, more of the vibrato, emotion, and dynamics can be felt by the listener and the player.
I've used .010, .012, .016, .024, .034 & a .044 Pyramid's for ages. I use both the pure nickel and Monel on round cores!! Great stuff! I love the very flexible silver plated, German Steel(music wire) they use vs. the Tin plated shit that American companies use. Gibson use to use Silver Plated wire back in the `50's & `60's along with Monel wrap wire (Mona-Steel sets).
It's not quite as black and white as you make it. We don't use silvered steel not because of cost but because we don't like it as much. A very thin layer of tin is added to music wire (it is not "crap" as you say, it's the same thing Steinway uses in their pianos) in order to prevent corrosion. Using silver in place of tin is an odd choice since everyone knows silver tarnishes the moment you look at it.
A lot of companys leave out the .0 which I find incredibly stupid. It just confused people further. Dont baby people and try to make the numbers easier to understand especially if its just making this harder. I'm a string joy loyalist for electric strings there is absolutely NOTHING better. Your strings arent just a little better they are a lot better. Plus for my 7 I need custom gauges so I'm a happy camper with the custom option. I liked you acoustic 80/20s but i prefer standard medium gauges cause they have more midrange and volume compared to your acoustic medium gauges. And sadly you dont have the string gauges for me to replicate the martin/daddario gauges. I use your electric 10-48's mostly and the .048 an .0135 is absolutely an improvement. But for me personally your medium gauges arent an improvement. Dont get me wrong your acoustic string quality is as good as can be but I really do believe youd see more sales if you offered a traditional medium set. The few strings you made smaller gauges in that set do reduce tension but they also reduce volume an feel to much like lights for guys like me who enjoy the sound and feel of traditional Martin gauges. I recommend string joy CONSTANTLY but I always have to throw it out there that I dont use your acoustic sets because of the difference in gauges. I cant begin to tell you how happy it would make me and many other string joy customers if you were to start producing those specific gauges for custom sets and/or for a specific "traditional medium" set.
I used to run the Gilmour strings on a Les Paul. They were wonderful. I currently run 9-48 on fender scale and 10-52 on gibson scale guitars
Nickel Rockers have been a long time favorites. What you have comparable in 10's?

No, it’s the strings I swear
Informative video. Yet another reason I love getting my strings from StringJoy.

I bought a set of Sliders a while back but I haven't actually put them on yet because none of my guitars seem worthy :D
Sliders are cool and powerbrights as well, Stringjoys take the cake!!
Man great information bro!
Great info!

With David's 2.5 step bends he does on many songs it'd make sense why his g and b are so thin
Thanks for the great logic and discussion. Perhaps DG himself will comment!!
I use your balanced 10’s with a high 11
on the e. Feels pretty good. I do that on all my 25.5” scale guitars and 10.5s on my Gibsons.
Would like to see some suggested jumping off sets for different guitars genres.
Like suggestion for Fender Jaguar (short scale) for surf lead.......

I really like the Gilmour Les Paul set on my G&L SC-2 (25.5” scale) with an 11 high E.

Close but no cigar - 10/13/15/26/32/38 are the correct gauges.

ANY INFO ON HANK MARVIN'S CUSTOM SET COMPARED TO THE VINTAGE SHADOW'S SOUND? HOW WOULD YOU MODIFY THEM FOR BALANCED TENSION?
I can't say I know anything about 'em, but my interest is piqued
great idea
7:58 mins waiting to hear the strings, no luck!

The G and B are the best benders.
this is really news to me
I play 13s it’s not to bad after a abit but sometimes my hands don’t even move in the morning
woww super interesting
from where did u get it?
are the stings of electric guitar and normal guitar same?
Electric and acoustic guitar strings vary mostly in terms of wrap alloy and string gauge. But yep, they're different.
