The biggest mystery when I was little was when there WERE cookies in the tins. I was so used to there being sewing supplies in the tins that when someone brought a tin to a Christmas party I was so perplexed and had to ask my mom why someone would bring cookies in the sewing tin, it seemed so silly. 😅 Being a kid comes with a lot of shocking revelations sometimes. 😂

The 1st day of Winter has arrived here, in Northern Colorado. The temperature dropped 20 degrees in 2 1/2 hours and brought 3 inches of snow in less than an hour this evening. It is currently -2 degrees, with a wind chill factor of -15 degrees. It is wonderful to sit by the fireplace and spin along with you.

I was going to guess sewing supplies stored in the cookie tin.
My grandmother stored buttons in a candy tin. The buttons were from the 1930's to the 1940's.
I sure wish we had that button tin now. LOL

Such a fun and interesting episode. Congratulations on all your success this past year. 👏 . I really want to learn that ancient way of spinning this year.
I wanted to recommend David Van de Kamp’s youtube channel, Knitting diaries. He is working to preserve the heritage textile crafts of Serbia. He has his own line of wool, from native sheep, too. I believe it’s mule spun. In one episode in particular he shows and demonstrates a spindle (he calls it a wand) and distaff he inherited from his grandmama. I heard about him from Fiber Chats. Take care fiber friend and stay safe and warm as we weather this storm. Merry Christmas. 🥰

Taiwanese Australian here, and It's cross culture! Danish butter cookie tins, moon cake tins... They all make the best sewing supply tins! And always leave you guessing!
On distaff, I've seen a ribbon tied to the metal hook, then used to secure flax while spinning!
I have one of these spindles too. When I start spinning it feels a bit weird but when there's more weight from the cob it spins for longer and behaves more similarly to a regular drop spindle.

You’d be disappointed in our house, as those sorts of tins rarely contain anything edible for very long!
The tins also tend to breed over time - I’m sure I have disposed of some and then happen to go into the garage for something and spot a tin - full of nails, screws or something equally metallic! Having said that, the ones with pretty pictures on the lids tend to find themselves full of crafty whatnots; so they never even get close to being disposed of!
So pleased you did a dealgan spin today; I have spent several happy hours eyeing up different makers’ dealgan offerings (as well as a lot of floof,) on Etsy (and other places) earlier today.
    Happy spinning, J x

Ooh, dealgan! I'll admit, my fascination started with looking up Scottish style spindles for a historically accurate (or at least plausible) cosplay idea for Janet from Tam Lin. Janet lives in the borderlands rather than the highlands and she's more associated with stealing off into the woods than anything domestic, so she may not accurately carry one, but i may have to get one myself because they aren't like any other spindles i've ever seen.
As for the Danish butter cookie tin, i know so many people associate them with sewing supplies, but my mom had a specialized sewing box where we kept needles and thread and buttons. I remember those tins sometimes having fudge in them, or home made cookies that didn't fit in the cookie jar. I wanna say there were cupcakes in them once or twice? I also remember them being a lot more decorative.

Seriously though, I'm really wanting to get a distaff like that one, I've tried using different items around the house and last night used my knitty knotty (removed one arm)- that was interesting. I LOVE my Dhealghan. it's not a full suspended the way I use it but I found it incredibly intuitive. Yep - start by hand..... I will start going down, then secure it by winding around, so you have an initial under in addition to the cross under as you go. the wind on requires experience to gage. Mine is flaired at the bottom, so it's a bit easier.

I guess sewing in the tin, that's what I put in mine. Thanks for today's vlog mas. I enjoyed the tape loom weaving and the spinning.

I have to confess I haven’t kept up with the spinning since I’ve been so busy but I do love watching and listening to the stories. I will definitely spin them all up eventually. You inspire me to do more.

I live in Wisconsin, I'm getting ready for the storm to hit too. When I does I plan to stay inside to knit, spin & X stitch. Happy Holidays!

I have never seen any of these boxes filled with cookies. I have one with embroidery thread, one with buttons and my mother keeps her knitting needles in one. (In Germany)

I have different color tins, blue, red, yellow, and a bigger green one full of old lace scraps. Not sure who got all the cookies, since it wasn't me for most of them.

I have so many of these tins, none of them have cookies in them! Love the dealgan, may have to look into them more. Now I want a Turkish spindle and a Dealgan......

I said buttons XD I know I should have heard buttons every time you moved the tin if there were any in there, but I still most often picture those tins holding a button collection so I couldn't change my mind in time.

my guess was a sewing kit. My mom had several of them in the house. Once every few years there would be a tin of cookies actually in the house lol. Happy Yuletide to you all btw from my home to yours.

My grandma used tins for sewing and button storage. I loved sifting through the button tin.

My grandma had some old tins in her sewing cabinet up on the top shelf. They were like treasures. I wish I had at least one of them, but I don't know what happened to them after she passed. I am starting my own tin collection now in memory of her.

I have a dealgan spindle a friend's father made me. I never got the hang of using it as a drop spindle. I will be trying the way you showed to see if I can do better. I have a vast collection of vintage tins that hold all sorts of random things. I usually have to oen each one to find something because I cant remember what's in which one. 😄
