So a new product comes to the market for boats
    It requires constant maintenance
    Expensive to repair
    Weaker in use
    Susceptible to water logging
    Susceptible to rot
    Even infestation
Who would buy it - Wood

    Embarcaçao de metal é loucura...
Depois começa a entrar água pelos arrebite.

Nice boats but I'm sure most would appreciate the Quintrex for overall supremacy. But the Weldcraft jets are the quite compelling difference.

** The owner/proprietor of Seacrets in OC, MD is always riding in a boat similar to this ... He supposedly builds boats similar to this... Is this his pet project company ? Edit : ** Nope his name is Leighton Moore - MooreBoats

SPEEDBOATMANIAC 410 first let me tell you.... Ocean City MD is one awesome town!!!!!
I used to go there every summer. The people, food and entertainment are fantastic! I also frequented Seacrets..... Lots of nice ladies!
Back to boat business> I have friends with the welded boats. Also have a a friend who used to work for Sandy Hook Pilots in Staten Island NY. Their small to midsize boats are all welded aluminium. They don't experience any probs. And they go out in all sorts of weather. I'm inclined to check out an aluminium boat next month. Guess I'll know if it works for me...fiberglass guy here.

Most people who have bought a welded boat end up buying something different the second time around. I would much rather have a solid fiberglass boat in my garage. Thirty years ago I had loads of fun with a small run-about with an 85 horsepower engine. The only thing I ever had to replace was a ignition module on the Chrysler engine!

Had Alumaweld 18ft. Aluminum cant take fatigue from the waves and breaks. Not the at the welds. Fiberglass way way better

What's all of the stuff I keep reading all over the internet about busted welds in these boats?
I love the forward console design, but I need a tough boat...not something that will get busted at the welds.

yea i dont think these boats are good in even 20 cm waves.

FLAT BOTTOMS and BIG waves are sure fire mix to break a weld, if your plan is for rough water add degree angle and a few more stringers and that problem stops

The problem with welding aluminum is that the weld is much weaker than the plate. In other words the aluminum loses heat treat. You would have to re heat treat the boat in its entirety to reintroduce full strength!! Also some companies only weld from the outside, making for a weaker weld. Boats should be welded from the inside first, the weld the outside and grind the chines sharp. Always talk to the welders before buying a boat. See if they push or pull weld. Push welds aren't as pretty but they penetrate better. Aluminum welding is an art form and much more difficult than steel. I know, I'm not great at it, but my brother in law is a monster welder. Remember, study the welding and interview the welders before you buy the boat!! I know how to tell the difference of the style of welding and what to look for!!

Marine applications (e.g. boats)... 5052 aluminum alloy... not heat treatable. I'm sure you just forgot.

    • @Mike383HK
      @Mike383HK 8 лет назад +2

5052 is NOT used for the structural framing. 6061T6 is. That's what loses heat treat! Very weldable but can crack if not done properly.

Mike just buy the boat and forget about the science. I've used a ton of aluminum boats.

You might want to use 1/4 inch aluminum but it will be heavy. I've built 30 foot and 25 foot aluminum boat. It is so easy. I can build a 25 foot boat in 80 hours with a helper, but they e like the work boat with washboards.

There's a good reason welded alum. pontoon boats are not recommended for use on the great lakes and other larger bodies of water...the swells take their toll: broken welds, broken rivets, broken ribs and on and on.
