Funny how the exact same problem happened to Hidenori Shoji, the creator of the Karaoke minigame. He proposed it to the higher ups after the positive feedback towards the waterfall minigame in Kenzan and was declined instantly. He kept trying until the proposal reached Nagoshi who he thought it was worth a shot so the minigame was added and became an immediate success in Yakuza 3

Apparently Shenmue is the reason Sega were very hesitant on another open world like game. Shenmue sold "decent" but it still under performed to make up development costs. The fact Yakuza 1 even got made at all and became a successful multi media series is a miracle.

It's funny how Kiryu is pretty much the face of SEGA these days. But on the other hand, he can't really become the actual mascot for the company because he comes from an M-rated franchise, lol. Plus, it's rather fascinating how despite doing yearly releases, there's not much burnout for the franchise compared to say, Assassin's Creed. I think it comes down to scale. Yakuza games are long, but they aren't BIG per se. They know that they're a conveyor belt of products and thus doesn't try to tackle more than they can handle each releases, meaning that while not game-changing, each new product are always mostly polished. Plus, even if the gameplay's largely the same, the story carries the game enough for it. Also, a fun fact. Despite largely targeted at the adult male demographic, the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise is somewhat more popular with the female audience in Japan, specifically the housewife demographic. It's something Kiryu's VA has amusingly noted about the difference of the fanbase between Japan and overseas, lol.

As someone who's been with the series since the 1st on PS2, I remember how Sega was almost going to give up on it and not localize 5. They were consistent in localizing 3 and 4 after a year, but 5 they were quiet for so long that I imported it and saw a full fan guide with translations to help play through it. It wasn't until 4 was released as a free PS+ game and did well that they finally announced in late 2014 that 5 would be localized and we'd have to wait until a full year into 2015, but it only got a digital release. 5 originally released in Japan December 2012. 0 was what really kicked the series off into full gear since it was a great starting point as they perfectly wrote the story into 1/Kiwami 1 and Baka Mitai being a meme. Also releasing on Xbox/PC helped greatly.

A couple of minor errors I noticed: Majima has noticeably different models between Yakuza 1 and 2, unlike most of the returning characters. It's also misleading to only attribute the bad Monkey Ball games to RGG Studios considering Nagoshi originally came up with and directed Monkey Ball, Super Monkey Ball, and Super Monkey Ball 2. It was his studio, Amusement Vision, that later took on staff from Smilebit (Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, and legacy staff from Sega AM3) to create the original Yakuza and that merger grew further and came to be officially renamed RGG Studios by the time they made Binary Domain.

From things like the Music to UI to the various minigames and side activities you do in between the story it feels like something that you would play on one of SEGA's consoles like the Dreamcast back in the 1990's.

North Star is a really good Yakuza type game main story wise. As someone that attempted to platinum the game... The side content is easily the worst in the series. Driving was ass, the karaoke replacement expects you to perfect EVERY songs, you have to compete against each coliseum boss a minimal of 9 times each, and there are 12 different fighters. Hostess is the same but with 4 tables, with some missions expecting you to fuck up really badly, but not too badly to progress through that substory.
There's just a lot of good things in North Star that are just... Overshadowed by all the bad stuff. Even moreso than Dead Souls. And as fun as juggling combos were, I think using the Zero engine over Unreal or the hot new Dragon Engine is what REALLY burned the game in the end, even if it meant going for a more realistic look than anime. Especially when it came to salvaging for materials in the wastelands, fuck that bit in particular.
North Star is a black sheep. But I'd replay it over 3 any day, at least it's less tedious to play than that dated mess. Don't ever attempt platinum on North Star, worst mistake of my life. You're looking at: Perfecting ALL karaoke-styled minigame songs, ALL minigames (casinos included) 100%, dealing with a substory that has an issue spawning just outside of Eden (Oh Father, Where Thou Art?), grinding Kenshiro to level 99 (go southeastern most of the map, grind endlessly there), fighting in coliseum over 200 times, with one boss having 3 minutes worth unskippable heat actions (Devil Rebirth), 100 BILLION ingame currency (hope you like hostess minigame), and salvaging materials in the wasteland with some of the shittiest driving mechanics ever. And then there's maxing out all Talismen, which functions like how Ishin handles DPad equipment... Which requires you to spend HUNDREDS of playtime on each minigame to get a material of each character, 100% minigames isn't even enough. It felt like this game was designed in a way that forces the players to squeeze every ounch of playtime the game offered.
North Star deserves a second chance, the IP itself didn't drag the game into the mud

@@AlphaFlare The Yakuza series is more successful than every but I kind of wish that SEGA and Sumo would team up again to make another SEGA All Stars game like a 3rd racing game (not counting Team Sonic Racing) or I would like to see a SEGA crossover fighter similar to either Smash Bros or Power Stone though Nagoshi is a bit strict on Kiryu being in fighting because of Kiryu not hitting women in the Yakuza games.
But if SEGA and Sumo did do another racing game, I would love to see Kiryu and Majima be playable racers but in terms of the vehicle design I was thinking similar to Ryo because other SEGA characters on the roster have cartoonish looking vehicle, but Kiryu and Majima would have a more realistic looking car considering that the Yakuza series is set in the real world so I think a more realistic looking vehicle would fit their character but a Kamurochō track while a cool idea might cause some problems with the ESRB Rating.

Well i do agree Kiryu & majima appear more than sonic in mainstream media nowadays than sonic. They can be said what define sega nowadays. And Lost Paradise is such a good game especially for you HnK fans and their attempt to change the story and some wacky minigames is fun compared to what Koei Tecmo or others did.
Also at least in my country you can still find people that own SNES, NES, PSX, and someone having original doom/wolfenstein in their old PCs than someone have sega consoles such as Dreamcast/Saturn. Sonic, Megaman, etc. only popularize with PC emulation of it in my country and ofc western media. And only resurfaced after the movie and they loving it bcs Jim Carrey lol.

I wasn't had any expectation for a long time from SEGA not until I played Yakuza 0. I was exposed to the series when I was watching videogamedunkey makes a review of it. My wind was really blown up, it had a decent graphics even on a low spec laptop I have back then. (I decided to get a better spec when I started Kiwami 2). There's a lot of wacky side activities to do with a great and compelling storytelling. It's not GTA and by map comparisons Kamurocho was too small but you can visit the arcade and plays SEGA classic collections. The combat was satisfying, you can use different finishers only relies on condition and environment surroundings (that's too many for one playable character). I was thinking why this awesome game doesn't save SEGA already. It was an era of where I trust Sony and Nintendo brands more and doesn't put much any love for SEGA. Recent years, that mindset was no longer. SEGA puts the series into the main spotlight and I started to trust SEGA again. My faith on company that makes Sonic was restored. I keep expecting more SEGA goods as well as RGG installments. I can't wait for Infinite Wealth and P3Reload this year. Those things won't happen without the risk SEGA have to take to bring the series to the world.
