Yes it’s sad he hasn’t been talked about more. Soooo happy I have had a chance to discover this amazing artist through RUclips. I feel like my dad probably listened to him in the 70s because his work brings me a joy that’s hard to describe 🥹
I had the honor of attending a Gil Scott Heron performance at the historic Tampa Theater in 89 or 90. My 3 friends and I were the only white faces in the packed venue. He made it to Tampa but his band and equipment did not. So, with only a borrowed electric piano, he gave us an impromptu and unique show. He was nothing short of outstanding.
The Irish people have a lot more in common with the black, and brown and native communities across the world than they do with anyone else. I’m proud to be an Irish-American who advocates for the unification of Ireland, and other occupied countries who also deserve their land back!
Yet when yalll got the chance yall said fk us. Despite us going through the same things at first. Yall wasn't really considered white until the 70s, even in the UK, and in the States, IT really wasn't until Kennedy got into office . But even still, you lot became slave catchers and overseers, then the police ( which is the same thing) . I dnt understand why most Irish overseers and masters were cruel
I first saw him on TV on the Old Grey Whistle Test in the UK in the 70s, he was playing his song Johannesburg with Brian Jackson. I then went to see him play at tge Hammersmith Odeon comcert venue in London. One the way back from work, I bumped into him on the tube (underground train) and managed to say hi to him and tell him I was really looking forward to seeing him play the next day. He was a very special musician, poet and communicator. He inspired a generation of people, despite not being a superstar as people call them. He was a down-to-earth person who had a deep understanding of the political and social reality of our times back then, which is just as relevant today as it ever was.
I appreciate any cultural/social conscious videos. But as of 2021, I found out that there are groups of white people who are held in "camps" in Africa now. I guess it's tit for tat.
Been listening to this teacher for decades. Gil Scott Heron was an amazing communicator, and live became a for to be reckoned with. I saw him once, saw the Last Poets several times, i consider them to be part of my schooling. I was born in the UK in 1963. I'm still listening.
I regularl, played stage shows in the Amherst mass, area with Gil 2:32 and his groups. We memorized the revolution /not televised so that folks wouldn’t forget.🙏🏾
They voted Trump. A Televised revolution indeed. Schism/Divide and Conquer is a Republican Party political tactic against their own people that died defending their own country.
Love Gil Scott Heron. It's cool to see (at least on youtube) that newer generations might be getting to know him. Then again it might just be an algorithm.
It’s hard for us youngbucks you ogs need to stop gatekeeping…reminisce a lil and educate us now on what a real revolution is and it starts in the heart.
I’m a huge fan of Gil Scott-Heron. Not only did he make music that slaps, he dropped knowledge. I first became aware of Gil in the late nineties while doing a stint in prison in Sydney Australia. It was a great time for me in terms of discovery. I read Malcolm X’s biography, read Pimp by Ice Berg Slim, and my mate hooked me up with a CD player with a compilation CD which featured The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, as well as a personal favourite The Bottle, plus Tim Buckley’s Night Hawkin’, Kinky Friedman… a song Nelson Mandela listened to on his Walkman while incarcerated at Robbin Island but RUclips censors don’t like the title: “Ride Em J_w B_y” a song BTW which is about the trials and tribulations of the Jewish people since time immemorial. It is a country song that uses the life of a cowboy as a metaphor for the Holocaust and the wandering diaspora. Long story short these books and tracks opened my eyes and made me start acting right and taking pride in myself. I started to like the man I saw in the mirror. Music and literature are very powerful. They can break you out of the worst prison ever, the prison of the mind.
Yeah, but what about when I create the history? Can his story be my story too? Can his story be true? Or is it false because it’s not your story? And is it true when it’s yours because you are somehow correct? And who told you that you were right and he was wrong? And what makes their story correct and the first man’s wrong?
Love this man. Everything he said is so true. This needs to be taught in every school. They intentionally leave the truth like always out of the history books as usual to suit them. We need more people like him with guts to speak out with the truth and not with lies. The truth is always swept under the carpet. They need to rewrite the history books with the truth about everything.
everyone has the right to fall back into the past and live their lives of tranquility into the sunset........ or live a life of humility and forgiveness of the past and live in peace and harmony with all.....
Sad to think we lost such poets and poetry. Empowering to realize it now rests collectively on all of us, not just a few enlightened souls, to carry the torch into the fearsome unknown.
So, I kept listening as I should to me & the devil after hearing it for the first time from the penguin show, And Not only I get to enjoy the music, but also to know and learn about this amazing artist with his flawless words.. Thank you hbo.
I had the fortunate opportunity to see Scott-Heron live at the Rose Bowl for an Earth Day concert. I had an all access backstage pass and shook Gil's hand after his performance. The music talent that day and night was amazing. CSN, Donovan, Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder along with other high ranking performers. I wasn't allowed to get near Stevie Wonder although I tried. Bob Dylan stood in his tailor the entire time he was at the Rose Bowl. The rest I was able to hang out with and came very close to having a fist fight with David Crosby. What an experience. They don't schedule concerts like that anymore. The current talent is god awful compared to what was going on back then.
Okey doke. This is NOT the glorious poem "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," this is one I have never heard before, and I am entirely grateful to you for uploading it, but, the title is misleading. What is this one called? I love it.
This is an excerpt from the BBC documentary called “ The Revolution will not be televised”, on Gil Scott Heron. Heron wrote himself that aired in 2003.
It took me a until the end of the video to realize that those were statues sitting next to him. I thought they were just really, really, listening to him.

Just discovered him yesterday
This man was a national treasure. Too bad we lost him. Rest on, Gil Scott Heron. Truly, the revolution will not be televised.
The problem is wanting a Black man to be a national treasure in the very nation that unapologetically kills Black Men, see the irony!
Let's hope it not motorised either x
Years later he still the illest to ever do it.
