We get a ton of pallets in our warehouse, some from overseas, and I learned that you have to check the stamp to ensure they are safe to use. Some have been treated with chemicals that you shouldn't handle. You can google the stamps online. I love reusing and the look of the pallet bed!!

You want to look for the "HT" stamp. That means they've been heat treated for foreign bugs.

I've built similar but deeper and longer beds... with less cutting (less aesthetically pleasing).
I leave the deck boards attached to the runners and only remove the middle deck board on the top and bottom (pinch bar). Afterwards, I cut the runners in half (24") and abut the half pallets together (cut runners downwards and they will sink into soil or serve as feet for uneven ground). Typically, I use four half pallets per side (40"+40"+40"+40"=13'4") and attach a half pallet for each end wall (top side of pallet outward, important for cross members). Then I line the box with lumber plastic (free) (staple near top of bed) and slit some holes for drainage (be a little generous with the plastic). I also add some boards to prevent bowing at the middle by attaching two diagonal crosspieces from a sacrificed pallet (forms an X). Probably not necessary but I add some boards on the top of the plastic as strapping to help hold the plastic in place and trim with an exacto knife. If you feel like there is too many deck board gaps in your pallets for aesthetic purposes, you can add some more boards from scarified pallets. Afterwards, fill with soil. Theoretically, you could use as many half pallets as you'd like for the side walls as long as after every couple you add some cross members for stability.
I also build lettuce beds in a similar way that are easy on the back for harvesting. I stack five or six pallets up and add one pallet on top upside down. I leave the runners intact but remove the bottom deck boards (three). I then sacrifice a pallet for its deck board and attach them to the perimeter of the upside down pallet to create side walls. Again, line with lumber plastic and add drainage cuts. Finally fill with soil (~4"-6") and you have beds that are ideal for harvesting shallow rooted plants that are low growing (e.g., lettuce). Theoretically, you could abut these as well to create longer beds that are easier to harvest from. The centre runner board is a bit of a pain to seed around but gives a good reference point for succession planting of rows.
Your design does appear more structurally sound but more labour intensive. Considering there is a lot of moisture in my climate and pallets don't last long (especially softwood pallets), I don't want to put a lot of work into these beds as they need to be rebuilt every few years despite how well they are constructed.

Remove panels' first grinder used to çut nail heads in only the center row of the nails.
Second circular saw the ends of your boards and losing the boards at the 2x4s as your friend shows. The middle boards should pull off the nail stumps after the heads were removed by grinders. The end boards can be saved by grinders and the nails, but it is a job your call about the end 2x4 if worth the effort

Great insight! Working with reclaimed wood I encounter many species of insects: termites, ants, carpenter bees, and many others. Each geographic area and garden will be different. We have a ton or termites in the area, luckily I’ve never had the issue between my coops, barn, raise beds, outdoor furniture and home. Always use heat treated wood and inspect for signs of rot or infestation. 👍🏻

    • @GardenerScott

Cedar is resistant to decay resistant and can last longer than many woods. Most pallets are hardwoods that are slow to decay. Depending on weather conditions they both should last many years.

    • @GardenerScott

@@xbhendrix Treated pallets are primarily for international use so that harmful insects are not introduced to a different country. Within the U.S. few pallets are treated with chemicals for state-to-state use because there is no need to keep those insects out.
