  • Here's another quick video showing how exactly to split billets for spooncarving from a reasonable size log. Most beginners won't be going out and getting the very large logs that experienced carvers prefer to work with - so here's something a bit more reasonable.
I used my crosscut saw and froe for this, but a frame saw or pruning saw, and spare hatchet will work in a pinch. Just don't use your nice carving axe for splitting logs - the repeated banging on the poll will loosen the handle over time. Also, definitely don't use a metal hammer. A wooden club is effective and simple to make.
If I can't use up these billets in a single sitting, I'll put whatever is left into my freezer to stay green for next time.
    About me:
Littlebear Slöjd is Julian's Spooncarving business. Littlebear refers to Ursa Minor, and Ursula, which is his Daughter's middle name. Slöjd (Anglicised as "Sloyd") is the Swedish word for practical and useful handcrafts. It also refers to an educational philosophy about teaching wood and leather craft, especially wood carving, to young people.
Julian is a certified wooden spoon tragic and has carved hundreds of spoons since picking up the hobby on a trip to Canada. He also has a bachelors degree in history, with research into spoon carving in Wales for his final project. Joining together the craft of spoon carving and the study of material culture history is his way to rediscover the role of the wooden spoon in the household. Julian uses his spoons every day and encourages others to make functional objects and do the same.

    Just look at those colours!
I love carving plum, but it's so hard to get hold of most of the time.

Which axe do you use? Cause I have Fiskars x7 weights 700gr and I am wondering which Robin Wood axe to choose, the small (31 cm, 720gr) or the large one (35 cm, 975 gr)

How do you preserve your spoon blanks? I usually place them in a plastic bag then put them in the freezer so they stay green. But often takes a lot of space so woundering if there is an other way.

I also use my freezer. I tend to only axe as many blanks as I can use, otherwise I leave the wood in as large s section as I can in the log so it stays green.

Where do you get your greenwood from? There isn't that much forest in my area so I don't know how to get my hands on it

Good news is, I live in the inner city so there's no forest around here either. I get it mostly by networking - friends who also carve, gardeners, arborists, etc.
Once you meet enough people, opportunities will start to show up.
