I have lived in Mexico for 41 years and have had amazing medical here, including surgeries. On the other hand, I've heard of medical malpractice like these people experienced , happen in the States. So I suggest putting the blame on specific clinics or doctors, not the country.....

I agree with what you said but I would not go to Mexico for surgery. I feel it would be easier in my own country to do the research and find a reputable clinic and doctor. This is harder to do in a foreign country, just as it would be harder for a foreigner to do the research in my country. For the record, I have heard of some of these complications occurring here in the US also.

I cannot continue to watch this without commenting. This program makes it sound as if the same complications never happen in the US. I'm a nurse and I can assure you they do. As with ANY medical procedure, patients should thoroughly research the provider and the facility regardless of where it is done. Furthermore, the story the one gentleman told about his mother in law dying d/t the gastric band is not necessarily a reflection on the surgeon. That is a potential complication and inherent risk of any gastric band procedure. The surgeon could be at fault if the patient was not fully informed or the band was placed wrong. But, there again, you cannot paint all surgeons from Mexico with the same broad stroke. I got my gastric sleeve surgery in Mexico and I did a ton of research and was thoroughly convinced that I was getting one of the best surgeons in the world. Now, I am sure of it. Every step of the way including pre op preparation and post op follow up have been outstanding. Knowing what I do now, I would choose my surgeon in Mexico all over again, even if insurance would pay for surgery in the US.

I went to dr Gonzalez In Tijuana and his assisting doctor was a UC San Diego grad. I also knew two people personally that went to

I agree. I do not understand people who do not do their due diligence. This surgery has many risks and any GOOD bariatric doctor will tell you what they are. As mentioned above, in Canada it takes over a year from first consult to surgery. They want you to know what you are getting into first and ensure they feel you are ready for it and what comes after. I know some people just want it done out of desperation as they think this is the magic bullet.

I looked up Oscar Lumban- Obesity Relieve and there are photos of the nurse in the OR wearing hoop earrings and false eyelashes. Particularly the jewelry, this would NEVER be allowed in a US OR during surgery. Imagine if it fell into the patient’s body during surgery or transferred bacteria from the jewelry to the patient’s open wounds. I’m surprised you didn’t see that HUGE RED FLAG. Jewelry should never be in the OR and this clinic is posting photos with the nurse hovering over the patient under anesthesia with his/her body cut wide open. Simply because your experience went well doesn’t mean an unsanitary clinic should be recommended. You get what you pay for. Shocking.

I was uncomfortable with the focus on "south-of-the-border" aspect being the problem. There were so many more pertinent and interesting ways to approach this issue. I know two people who died after complications from weight-loss surgery they got in the U.S. This kind of surgery is highly risky. Not only that, the cost of healthcare in the U.S. is way too high, and insurance companies should not be classifying these surgeries as cosmetic.

I had my gastric sleeve surgery in 2015 in Mexico. I had an amazing experience and no complications at all. My Mother had gastric sleeve here in the US (Texas) and now she’s about to have to undergo another surgery because the surgeon didn’t cut her sleeve correctly and it’s causing major acid reflux. The acid is going up into her esophagus and her doctor told her she will eventually get cancer of the esophagus if she doesn’t get another surgery to fix this problem. Soooo I’m glad I choose Mexico and not USA for this particular surgery. There are bad surgeons and good ones there just like here. You have to do the research. You have to talk to others that have went and experienced this first hand.

I always assumed that she was just like that, but then she told me she had had the lap band surgery, but she had it here in the states, not in Mexico. Well it doesn't matter where yu have it you still need to follow certain lifestyle changes. Well she wanted to still keep losing weight, even though she was already skinny. Instead of eating healthy, she would skip meals and hardly eat anything. She was always sick and would miss work. Well I went to work one day and was told she had died, because she had gone into cardiac arrest and they couldn't bring her back. Even though she was very skinny, she always saw herself as fat. You can't fix that with surgery. I wish her mental needs had been addressed along with her weight needs.

True- things can go bad anywhere- but overall the US has some of the highest surgical centers, hospitals and highly trained doctors in the world. That’s why people come from all over to have surgeries here. However, it is expensive. That’s not to say there’s not good places and wonderful doctors in other countries- but we do have far more requirements and rules with working doctors and hospitals where they might not in other countries.

It is focused on Mexico because many US citizens are travelling to south America, particularly Mexico, to get cosmetic procedures done at a fraction of the cost it would be in the US. Lots of people, especially elderly and critically or chronically ill Americans who cannot afford procedures in the US (most commonly non invasive procedures, cosmetic procedures and dental work) go to Mexico instead.

Yadira Torres The difference is we can get follow up care with other doctors/hospitals through our insurance. Our hospitals can't legally turn us away. Plus we can sue for malpractice. Our doctors are obliged to carry medical malpractice insurance. Personally I would never go to another country for medical care outside of certain European countries, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Anything can happen when there is no legal system methodically overseeing physicians and a medical board overseeing physicians' work to enforce their involvement with patient care. Plus we can verify medical licenses here in the U.S.. I have 12 Doctors in my family-nearly 15 years of higher education each. I know the standards required to be a competent physician.

    • @lolalopez7657
      @lolalopez7657 6 лет назад +5

FacheChanteDeux , It sure does sound like youre saying that only anglos are good medical providers! Which isnt true. There are a lot of good Latin American doctors that are first rate. The problem is if you are not living in that country, its hard to know who and what are the best and reputable from that particular country. And that is true in Europe as well. I work as a paralegal for plaintiffs and Defense medical malpractice claims. The medical field in the States is so regulated and on top of that you have a peer review group within the hospitals reviewing cases with questionable outcomes. And yes, if somethibg goes wrong, you can sue. My mother is Colombian and had cosmetic surgery on her neck and she did it in the US. Why? Cause many people have gone over there to save money only to never return or have horrible outcome with no way to make the doctor responsible for their work. However, I probably wouldnt go to Europe, Japan or anywhere else either because i dont think you can compare the medical care you get in the states to anywhere else. BUT I will say that does not mean there arent really good doctors in Latin American countries. Its just a bit of a risk when you are not from there in k owing who is reputable.

    • @yadiratorres7508
      @yadiratorres7508 6 лет назад +1

Mathilde G I agree, it would be more secure to stick to what you know and the country that you live in. The laws in the U.S. are put in place to to create a system that works for the people, as well as the medical professionals. If you decide to have a procedure in a foreign country, you are risking it. You are not only making the decision to have the procedure but to abandon the system that is in place to protect you. It may go great, but it may take an ugly turn like it is mentioned in the video. There is sketchy places here in the US too. It goes back to doing your research and being aware of the resources that are available to you, like the license check.

Im 422 pounds. I used to weigh nearly 497. When you put youre mind to a diet you can do it. In 2 months time i lost 26 pounds.
I cut back on soda and started drinking more perrier and flat water.
I quit chips and cut back on candy and staeted eating more veggies, fruit and filling stuff like chicken and meat or fish.
And just recently (3 months ago) i quit fried food and salt. So im hoping that itll make me lose more weight.
Im trying to say, people should try dieting first instead of surgery cuz diets do work.

I don’t know who did those surgeries or where they were done, but I’m Mexican and have had the surgeries (as many of friends and family members) and everyone is more than okay. Just because a couple of Americans had bad experiences during the Bariatrics surgeries, doesn’t mean we have bad surgeons.
You have to do research on the doctor and the hospital the surgery is going to take place at.

My mother got gastric sleeve surgery in Tijuana, Mexico. She lost over 100 pounds. The surgery was fine, but what wasn't fine was my mother's new mentality. This doesn't just happen in Mexico, I live in the United Kingdom and we have an NHS system where they are supposed to take absolutely fantastic care of you and after-care is part and parcel of any surgery that is performed.
In 2018 I had a gastric band implanted by one of the more senior consultants in the NHS and it nearly killed me, I have the band for 11 months and I lost only 6 pounds and that band was causing significant throat burning and they told me it was all in my mind, I had a pepsin test done privately that showed I had significantly levels of pepsin in my saliva now pepsin is a digestive enzyme that should not be anywhere near the throats and consequently I was rushed forward to have the band removed and by NHS standards it was removed very quickly.
What I am trying to say is it doesn't matter where the surgery is done it could be the best place on earth if your body is not going to accept it then is not going to accept it and that is not the fault of the surgeon, some people are just plain unlucky me being one of them.
I hope the people on your show are doing well and feeling much better my thoughts are with them

I've noticed, from my experiences and doctors I've gone to, that doctors in Mexico actually do their work. I've had many medical problems and the doctors here in the US only look to gain money, they don't care about their patients. In Mexico I've been diagnosed and given good medicine in a matter of moments. A fraction of the time than in the US.
My brother had messed up his knee when playing soccer. The doctors here said there was nothing wrong and they'd sent him to get many tests done. His knee was hurting and we noticed he started developing a soft lump on his knee. We went to Mexico and found out in about a week he needed surgery becasue he messed up his ligaments and tendons.

Many people have safe, effective, and affordable procedures there in mexico..the issue is our state of mind as a people..we have to get our minds together because there is no quick fix..We have to eat better, and move more. I know some people need this procedure (control diabetes, the 500lbs n up etc) but i find it hard to believe some of these smaller obese people 300 and under couldn't do it on their own..with proper guidance, therapy, food prep, excercise etc. Anyways thats just my humble opinion. May god bless and keep them or anyone deciding to go under the knife for bariatric surgery.

My husband died from it. You fix weight loss problems due to thyroid by working with a functional integrative physician who goes beyond ordering TSH, t4 and t3, orders all tests needed and prescribes either NDT thyroid or some form of t3. You also need to be aware that adrenal status and iron status is important for thyroid function. You also treat the symptoms not just the lab results.I added some t3 to my t4 and weight began coming off without effort. Insulin levels and leptin levels are also important. To lose weight you need to improve those.

But as an American living in Mexico, and I am in registered nurse, I never had such a good care with doctors in Mexico. I have had six surgeries here, two of them were to fix botches that happened in the United States. Mexican doctors still have heart and they have saved my life. But bariatric surgery is life-threatening in the United States as well. I remember at least three patients who died after bariatric surgery in Colorado. I see this as a weight-loss surgery problem, it is not a Mexico problem.

Yes, people are looking for the easy way out of obesity, but there is no easy way. There is only the choices you make every day of what you put in your mouth. Highly processed, greasy/sugary/salty foods are very addictive, and are the root of most obesity. It's not about exercise, and it's not about mutilating your stomach. There are not enough hours in the day to burn off the calories so easily consumed in junk food.

That’s not true for all people. I did all of that and my weight wouldn’t budge. I eat healthy and I’m active but my weight would just blow up no matter what I did. I had a 3+ month stall in my weight loss. I I found out the reason why I wouldn’t lose weight is because of undiagnosed insulin resistant PCOS that I’ve had since childhood. Just found out that I had it recently. So I’m getting the surgery because of it. Even my nutritionist and doctors said that the insulin resistance was messing with my weight loss and halting it. So it’s not an easy way out and it’s not necessarily laziness. I wish people would stop saying that and shut up. It just sounds like ya’ll can’t afford the surgery, so you shame others for wanting it. It’s a tool and guide to help your weight loss. You’re still expected to eat right and exercise.

I had VSG in MexiCali 2009. It was wonderful!!! Flying home 3000 miles coach sucked, first class would have helped the flight home. I became dehydrated few weeks after coming back to US, a friend, a trauma surgeon ( I'm a nurse) he asked if he could "study me" of course I agreed. And my surgeon did a fabulous job and my scans were shared with our medical facility jyst to show what type of quality work you can get in Mexico. Almost 10 years and I'm great. Zero complications. The hospital I was in puts most of the places I've been here to shame. It was a palace, my resort was spectacular. I did it solo, no husband, no friend, no mum. I was the only one in the group alone, coming out of the anaesthesia I was disoriented, (I've always had a difficult time with anesthesia btw) my surgeon sat with me for already three hours and held my hands. The down side was the post op support. I wish I would have had a local bariatric center that would have welcomed me- just for three group meetings. Im smart and handled it. Best decision I ever made about my health. And a far as the "East way out" it's NOT. Nothing about becoming obese, being depressed and having that horrible relationship with food is easy. They only thing I'd have done differently is moved away, and started a new life and never told anyone. Good luck to all

While all of these people seem to had horrifying experiences with surgeons in Mexico I don't think this is anti Mexican propaganda or bashing Mexico.
The piece is called MEDICAL TOURISM. The point is do your research and be careful when you go to another country for surgery. Regulations may not be the same as your home country so it might be that regulations for calling yourself a surgeon in one country may not hold the same weight or meaning and vice versa.
If people watching can't separate people's individual experiences from international surgeries in general...😒...

I know two people that went to Mexico for weight loss surgery and both times they were very successful. The hospital was incredibly clean, the doctors and staff were well educated and showed confidence in there work by being able to answer all their questions. You have to do your research. If you find a medical facility that is highly recommended and has a good track record you should go with that one. Every procedure has its risks and we know this is also true in the US.

@lranieri1 It's vanity! These people did not have a lot of weight to loose. You don't put yourself under the knife to lose 75-100 pounds. I warned and pleaded with my late husband not to have bariatric surgery. He was about 300 pounds and he was sedentary and had bad eating habits. If he made a moderate effort he could have lost some of the weight and that would have been good enough. He chose this dangerous solution and left me a widow and left behind two daughters. I don't care where you do the surgery. It's too risky.

I’m only on this video because I’m researching it for myself, and unless she’s over 5”7, today most insurances would cover weight loss surgery. Even with “coverage” though, copays and deductibles can make it out of reach. Even just giving a healthy birth is a small fortune with many insurances.

I had gastric sleeve surgery in June 2019. My insurance paid for everything except my deductible which I paid off in monthly installments. No more diabetes and A1C down at about 5. Hypertension is under control and I'm now down to 155 lbs. Of course my surgery was done here in the states with a great surgeon. I feel so bad for these people who had to go out of the country.
