  • Potatoes and Trenches - Sweden in World War 1. Sweden was neutral during the war, however it still suffered severe shortages due to the breakdown of foreign trade, and its territorial waters were the scene for many sinkings of ships and naval battles. And despite the neutrality 800 Swedish sailors were killed during the war. Sweden also played an important role in the exchange of prisoners - between August 1915 and February 1918, 63,463 wounded and sick POWs were exchanged between Russia and the Central Powers through neutral Sweden.
