The trouble with doing it with this method is that when you come to re-skin the drum, it is much more difficult to remove the rope as you have to undo each diamond individually in reverse, which takes ages. With the conventional method, you can just 'flick' the diamonds undone and pull the rope through. This is why most African players do not use this method. P.S I love your channel. Incredible, i will try it next time. A question : I have a djembe that already has 2 turns, I would like to undo them to redo them with your method. Should I do something to the djembe beforehand? So as not to lose tension or damage the skin due to loosening and retightening it ?
I'd say it's not worth redoing that many knots :) But if you have too much time: once all horizontal knots are untied the rope will get very loose, so you start first with tightening the verticals. Try to tighten it evenly, step by step, do multiple rounds if needed. Avoid applying a lot of force to one side of the drum while the other is still very loose or your upper rings will become skewed. Is it safe? Personally I ripped the rope two times while tuning using 100% of my arm power + lever (don't use soft wood sticks e.g. broomstick) , but I never damaged the skin.
