My grandfather was in a German prison camp during WWII. He was eventually rescued, and the first thing he was given to eat by his rescuers, bear in mind this was after years of near starvation, was a tin of bully beef. He was so grateful, but could never eat it again after that!
Lord this brings me back. I really need to get me a “tin” of this and make it like my mom used to for me (she is still with us but I don’t live near her so I haven’t had her version in a long while). One difference is that she never used browning in hers. In fact, I don’t remember her using browning all that much when I was growing up. What I do remember is that bully beef over rice was delicious!!!!!
I'd love to make this. In Puerto Rico we make corned beef by cooking done sofrito, some tomato sauce, sazón, and adding some water to let it simmer. We often serve it with potatoes, corn or other veggies mixed in along with some amarillitos (fried sweet plaintains). This is such a similar procedure overall and this looks amazing.
I'm from Mauritius and my folks used to make a corned beef meal similar to this called Rougaille corned beef. This recipe with the scotch bonnet looks dope.
Growing up I always thought the "Bully" was just a reference to the bull being a source of beef.... And for emphasis since we like repetition in our phrases (ie. nyami nyami, deggeh deggeh, licky licky etc)
What a memory you brought back Millie. My mom made school sandwiches with sliced bully beef, mayo, tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber. She also made, what we call a 'smoortjie', braised onions, tomatoes etc. It was delicious. These days the bully beef we get here is made with a mix of the strangest proteins. So I steer clear.
This is a first to hear it named Bully Beef. Corned beef hash is the name I know. I ate plenty as a child with eggs and toast. I find cooking it with onion & green pepper helps the salty flavor.
thanks for another great recipe ! (can we get some respect for Ms. Peartree and not have all the banging noises in the background during her recordings? this is at least the second video where it sounds like someone is loudly doing the dishes and/or moving pans around.... and we don't hear these distracting noises in other Food52 videos)
just glossing over the browning. i'm just learning about that stuff and it is a neat thing i need to start using instead of plain sugar in lots of places. it's just so neat. glad i learned how to make it.
Coming from a born and raised Jamaican, Millie this recipe is inaccurate. Ain't nobody adding browning to bully beef EVER. For your reference browning is added to raw meat with seasoning for the purpose of adding "color". Next time just order out and enjoy the real. Also I learned dates from the "historian" and nothing more. This some ole Americanized mess.
Who at Food52 decided to bless us with so much Millie content? We see you, we appreciate you and we thank you!

Sorry, but browning does NOT belong in bully beef.
I would use some Grace Tomato Ketcup instead of browning and add a tin of sweet corn. That over fuffy white rice, heaven.❤
Yup that's how I ate it growing up!
Yes she putting all type of foolishness in the pot she don’t know what she doing
I still nyam dis arf wid boiled dumplings, cabbage and potatos.
thanks for another great recipe !

Yes I Will Try This Bully Beef I Grow Up On Can Beef My Mother Made Sandwiches For Us Kids
More Millie please!
This is the first time I have seen canned beef used this way. Interesting. I will give it a try.
Corned beef Trinidad version. Peartree is the best she giving us the real deal Caribbean meals
Great job❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊
I love bully food
Big fan of Millie!
i love Millie she is so fabulous
Bully beef originally translated to boiled meat in French.
No browning when cooking corned beef. The Caribbean do not use browning in that meal
Another corn beef hash from around the world.

This some ole Americanized mess.
Affordable? In Australia this is no longer quite so. For a pensioner an occasional treat.
It depends on the brand. Noticed she did not use Hereford UK or Grace JA but Libbys formerly US owned but sold to the Swiss.
Not the jail boys mention. Lmao
😊👍👍
😅😅😅😅
i like this lady she comes off as very sensual.
Ah, so sad. One more meat recipe.
Loving this series of videos!
