    • @ScopeofScience
      @ScopeofScience  5 лет назад +90

      In general I agree that single-use needs to be the number one priority. But even things like computers - Why don't we have computers and laptops where the towers and cases are constant and we swap out the actual electronics? Usually its just one component that gets outdated, so we throw the whole thing away.

    • @Vojife

      I feel like without plastic as a cheap and versatile material we wouldn't have many of the problems we have now, but we would have many other problems and technology would be much less evolved. Which, yes, is not always a bad thing. However, isn't plastic an important part of solar panels or a lot of medical equipment (like for intravenous therapy), for example? (If it's not, please correct me.) That said, now it is definitely time to start figuring out alternatives.

    Candle is plastic (stearin, paraffin), the transparent lacquer on wood is plastic (even oil finish becomes a plastic over time due to polymerization), paint on walls/wood/items is pigments in a plastic carrier (even oil based paints turn into plastic when it cures due to polymerization).
    There are very few exceptions to ceramics and/or metals that are not plastics.
    Wood/cotton/plants etc. consist of cellulose (all plant based lifeforms do) which is a bio-plastic or bio-polymer depending on how you define it.

    The first synthetic plastic was patented only 110 years ago. It sure made it's way into everything fast. Some 90% of the plastic that makes it's way into the oceans comes from countries with a very poor standard of living in Africa and Asia. Perhaps the most effective way for the average American to reduce ocean plastics is to support charities that work to raise the standards of living and education in these areas. Side note: Your canned food likely contained a plastic lining.

This type of mirror is made of a piece of glass that is wedge-shaped in cross section-its front and rear surfaces are not parallel.
      On manual tilt versions, a tab is used to adjust the mirror between "day" and "night" positions. In the day view position, the front surface is tilted and the reflective back side gives a strong reflection. When the mirror is moved to the night view position, its reflecting rear surface is tilted out of line with the driver's view. This view is actually a reflection off the low-reflection front surface; only a much-reduced amount of light is reflected into the driver's eyes.

    • @Predated2
      @Predated2 5 лет назад +4

      Making disposable products of it isnt bad, but locations that do have disposable plastic products need to have a good plastic gathering system already. Having no way to dispose disposables is always bad. I mean, glass has been disposable for decades and a glass container is nearly everywhere. Almost every household is in a walking distance of a glass disposal. Plastic on the otherhand, does not have that.
      I think we can reduce 75% of the plastic pollution by simply having easier ways to dispose plastic.

    • @Predated2
      @Predated2 5 лет назад

      @@zyibesixdouze4863 Well, the infrastructure would have more bonuses long term. I mean, my country is on the lower end of unrecycled, unprocessed plastic waste, but still has about 0.5 tons of plastic pollution on a yearly basis. It is easier, more conveniant and a lot cheaper for the average person to throw plastic trash carelessly in the middle of the city. There are more glass containers, even though glass as a waste product only exists in alcoholic beverages. There is 150x more plastic waste in weight, than glass waste. Yet every new neighbourhood, every 1 square kilometer, there is at least 1 way to get rid of glass.
      Replacing disposable plastic with non-plastic takes a lot more time, effort and money than simply creating an easier way to dispose of plastic. At the very least, each public recreational place should have a plastic bin nearby, which only really requires adjusting a few schedules and route planning.

We're killing animals, the environment, and even ourselves due to our incessant usage of a slightly more convenient material/energy source."
      No doubt oil is useful, and we kinda do need plastics for a lot of stuff, but we shouldn't be making single use plastics and other things that ruin the environment. If we just recycled, instead of throwing all of our garbage in a hole and burying it, we'd be so much better off. I'm sure we could save literal tons of scrap metal and plastic, and use the other organic matter for compost and the like. Besides, there are better energy sources, like nuclear and solar.

    • @JDeWittDIY

      I don't think humans are obsessed with plastic. It's mostly economic forces that push plastic being used for so many things. Metal, glass, wood and other materials might be more durable, etc., but companies have decided that they can make more money by producing plastic things. Why? Because the average consumer simply goes for the cheapest option on the shelf. A set of $30 stainless steel measuring cups might last essentially indefinitely in your kitchen, yet a huge majority of people will by the plastic $1 set at the dollar store and replace it yearly when they crack, break, the letters get rubbed off, etc. After 30 years you're even, but you would have gotten a lot more joy out of using the metal ones.

    • @luisdaniel9542

      not really obsessed, think it of this way, there is two lakes containing pure and drinkable water, the one at the right is infested with creatures that could kill you if you get close enough, the other one at the left have no such thing, would you consider someone who only drinks water from the left "obsessed" with drinking from that lake? not really because is just way easier to get water from that lake, why would you ever spend money on, for example, metal when you can find a plastic that can replace it and is way lighter and cheaper, why would you spend on producing clothes with natural fibers when you can make them with plastic and have the same or better results and even cheaper? plastic is an amazing material that can be used to manufacture many things in mass

    guys, PLEASE support Kurtis on Patreon! He doesn't put ads up so none of his videos are pulling revenue. To see more incredible and well thought-out videos like these, please consider supporting with even the lowest tier. It pains me that tik tok 'creators are making thousands a month on patreon alone (nevermind all of scam products they push for more coin, plus ad revenue) to buy things that they don't need PLUS advertise more things *you* don't need, continuing our dangerous consumerist cycle. I'm so glad Kurtis is blowing up and I hope people see how important channels like this are and support!

    I would argue against the immoral use of gov't which is force, to force your economic changes. If your argument against plastic isn't compelling enough to most people, and if you don't provide a better alternative for companies to use instead of plastic, it probably won't get done. Nor is there any reason to think that the 3rd world would follow suit even if you could get most 1st world places to ban plastic.

    • @DaProHobbit
      @DaProHobbit 5 лет назад

      It's not really just an economic change though is it. If there were no environmental regulations, the seas would still be filled with sewage, almost all our fresh water would be undrinkable and it would be impossible to breathe in cities.

    youre doing a great thing for humanity. Showing how plastic is literally everywhere in our culture is a great wake up call that there are so many better alternatives. The cheapness of plastic is no longer an excuse! using plastic to increase consumption and for saving a couple dollars for big companies is no longer worth the suffering we are inflicting on our planet, the lifeform that has provided us with natural materials to survive with for all of human history until now.
